The feeding experiment was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of locally available feed resources for Tra catfish (Pangasianodon hypophthalmus) cultured a series of 21 hapa net cages installed in the earthen pond during a 4-month period. The reference diet contained fish meal as the main crude protein (CP) source, whilst in the seven test diets 20–100 % of the fish meal CP was replaced with CP from local feed ingredients: groundnut cake (GNC), cassava leaf meal (CSLM), sweet potato leaf meal (SPLM), soybean meal (SBM), golden apple snail meal (GASM) and shrimp head meal. There were differences (p < 0.05) among diets in final body weight, total weight gain, daily weight gain, specific growth rate, viscera-somatic weight (VSI%), hepato-somatic index (HIS%) and intra-peritoneal fat (IPF%). The respective values for the shrimp head meal diet were numerically highest, followed in descending order by the reference, GASM, GNC, SPLM, CSLM and SBM diet. Food conversion ratio, fish survival rate, total feed intake, feed utilisation, fish fillet and kidney proportions did not differ among the reference and test diets (p > 0.05). However, the viscera-somatic, hepato-somatic, kidney and intra-peritoneal fat indices differed among treatments (p < 0.05). These data show that fish meal protein can be replaced with protein from locally available plant and animal feed ingredient resources in feed cultured in net cages in pond for Tra catfish fingerlings in effectively compromising growth performance, feed utilisation or carcass traits of fish.  相似文献

To investigate the questions: (1) does tank size affect fish performance; (2) does tank size prior to an experiment affect later fish performance and (3) how does performance in experimental tanks compare with rearing in industry‐scale cages, Atlantic salmon smolts were acclimatized to 190, 3 or 0.9 m3 tanks (Phase 1; 1.5 months) before redistributed to Phase 2 for 5 months. Question 1: fish in 190 m3 tank were redistributed to 0.9 m3 (190 m3 → 0.9 m3), 3 m3 (190 m3 → 3 m3), or 103 m3 (190 m3 → 103 m3) tanks. Question 2: fish in 0.9 m3 tanks were redistributed to 3 m3 tanks (0.9 m3 → 3 m3), and compared to fish from 190 m3 tank (190 m3 → 3 m3). Question 3: fish were placed directly in 3 m3 tanks, not moved (3 m3 → 3 m3), and compared to reference sea cages. Phase 2 mortality: 190 m3 → 0.9 m3 (46%), 190 m3 → 3 m3 (29%), 190 m3 → 103 m3 (19%), 3 m3 → 3 m3 and 0.9 m3 → 3 m3 (<5%). Most mortality happened shortly after transfer. Our study suggests tank size dependent performance, based on growth and feed intake that increased with tank size. 190 m3 → 103 m3 fish were more active than 190 m3 → 0.9 m3 and 190 m3 → 3 m3 fish. 190 m3 → 103 m3 tanks had lowest relative variance. Previous tank scale history affected survival, since 0.9 m3 → 3 m3 fish showed higher survival than 190 m3 → 3 m3 fish. However, previous scale history did not affect growth rate, feed intake or somatic indexes. Fish performance in 3 m3 → 3 m3 tanks did not differ from the reference sea cages. However, fish in 103 m3 tanks performed better than reference cages, suggesting potential for improved commercial production. This study demonstrates that management practices can influence fish performance and should be taken into account when designing experiments.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine the long‐term effects of ambient unionized ammonia nitrogen (NH3‐N) combined with different feeding regimes on Atlantic salmon Salmo salar L parr growth, welfare and smoltification. Previous studies on the parr stage of Atlantic salmon have mostly focused on acute exposure, or at low temperatures. Atlantic salmon parr were exposed for 105 days (at 12°C, pH 6.8) to four sublethal ammonia concentrations ranging from 0.1 to 35 μg L?1 NH3‐N (0.1–25 mg L?1 TAN) at two feeding levels: full feed strength (+20% overfeeding) and 1/3 of full feed strength. After 21 days, it was observed that 32 μg L?1 NH3‐N reduced growth rate of parr fed full ration, but this effect was not evident at the end of the exposure. Feed utilization was not affected by ammonia exposure at any sampling point. Increasing ammonia levels were associated with a higher prevalence and severity of gill damage at 22 days but not at the end of the exposure. The examination of welfare indicators revealed only a few pathologies, not related to ammonia exposure. In addition, higher ammonia concentrations did not appear to influence the development of hypo‐osmoregulatory ability during parr‐smolt transformation.  相似文献

The effects of dietary cyanidin-3-O-glucoside (C3G) and concentrates from blackcurrant [Ribes nigrum] (BC) and elderberry [Sambucus nigra] (EC) on plasma and tissue concentrations of alpha- (alpha-T) and gamma-tocopherol (gamma-T) and cholesterol, as well as the fatty acid composition of the liver lipids were investigated in growing, male rats of the Sprague-Dawley strain. Animals were fed semisynthetic diets supplemented with 2 g/kg C3G, BC, or EC for 4 weeks. Dietary anthocyanins did not affect feed intake, body weight, and organ weights. C3G elevated the concentrations of tocopherols in the liver and lungs (P < 0.05). Cholesterol levels in plasma and liver were not affected by any of the regimens. C3G and BC reduced the relative amount of saturated fatty acids in the liver (P < 0.05). BC also lowered the percentage of 22:6 + 24:0 and EC the ratio of 20:3/20:4 n-6 (P < 0.05). In conclusion, dietary C3G, BC, and EC appear to have little effect on cholesterol levels and the fatty acid pattern in the liver but seem to be capable of sparing vitamin E in healthy, growing rats.  相似文献

Vegetarian diets are correlated with a reduced risk of developing cardiovascular disease and comprise a great variety of bioactive compounds, including hydroxycinnamic acid derivatives. Therefore, this study aimed to identify dietary hydroxycinnamic acid derivatives that may alter two important factors related to the development of cardiovascular disease, namely, tocopherol (T) and cholesterol (C) concentrations in the body. The effects of caffeic acid (CA), chlorogenic acid (CGA), and ferulic acid (FA) on alpha-T, gamma-T, and C levels in blood plasma, liver, and lungs were investigated after these compounds had been fed to rats for 4 weeks at concentrations of 2 g/kg in semisynthetic diets. None of the regimens affected weight gain, feed intake, or absolute weights of livers and lungs, although CA increased the liver weight relative to the body weight (P < 0.05). CA- and CGA-fed animals showed a tendency toward sparing vitamin E in all tissues, but statistical significance was obtained only for gamma-T in the liver of CA-fed animals (P < 0.005) and for alpha-T in the lungs of CGA-treated rats (P < 0.05). CGA supplementation reduced concentrations of lipids in the lung tissue (P < 0.05). CA and CGA elevated the concentrations of C in liver tissue and lipids to a similar extent, but only CA decreased the ratio of high-density lipoprotein C to total C in blood plasma (P < 0.05 for all effects). Animals eating FA showed T and C values comparable to those in the control group. In conclusion, this study demonstrates that dietary caffeic and chlorogenic acid may elevate tocopherols and cholesterol in vivo.  相似文献

The Swedish liming programme was initiated in 1977 to counteract the effects of anthropogenic acidification on aquatic ecosystems until the acid deposition has been reduced. Ecosystem development in limed waters has been followed since 1989 in a programme for integrated studies of the effects of liming acidified waters (ISELAW). The main objectives are to assess a) the long-term ecological effects of liming, b) to what extent ecosystems recover to a pre-acidification state, and c) to elucidate possible detrimental effects of lime treatment. The programme comprises monitoring of water chemistry, phyto- and zooplankton, vegetation, benthic invertebrates and fish in 13 limed and 5 non-limed lakes, and 12 limed and 10 non-limed streams. Paleolimnological studies are performed to reveal pre-acidification lake history. The results show that lime treatment detoxifies the water, although chemical and biological development varies among and within sites. In general the long-term changes are small compared to the initial changes associated with first treatment. Water chemical changes over time are reflected as reduced sulfur concentrations and increased nitrogen concentrations. Treated ecosystems seem not to recover fully to the situation before acidification, and due to re-colonization failure, several species are lacking in the limed waters.  相似文献

Turner et al. (Reports, 20 October 2006, p. 449) measured sedimentation from Hurricanes Katrina and Rita in coastal Louisiana and inferred that storm deposition overwhelms direct Mississippi River sediment input. However, their annualized hurricane deposition rate is overestimated, whereas riverine deposition is underestimated by at least an order of magnitude. Their numbers do not provide a credible basis for decisions about coastal restoration.  相似文献
