Use of the bisphosphonate drug alendronate for palliative management of osteosarcoma in two dogs

The bisphosphonate drug alendronate was used to suppress bone remodelling and tumour osteolysis as a palliative treatment for two dogs with osteosarcoma, one of the tibia and one of the maxilla. A spiral fracture associated with the tibial tumour healed after it was stabilised with an external skeletal fixator. Both dogs remained comfortable and survived for 12 and 10 months respectively after diagnosis, despite the fact that neither primary tumour was resected.     

Radial carpal bone fracture in dogs

In a retrospective study, 11 radial carpal bone (RCB) fractures in nine dogs were studied. Chronic lameness was reported in all dogs. Reduced range of motion and soft-tissue swelling of the carpal joints were clinical signs seen most frequently. Three common fracture patterns were identified: oblique fracture with a large medial fragment, sagittal fracture with a small medial fragment, and comminuted fracture. Radial carpal bone sclerosis and carpal osteoarthritis were identified in all dogs. Pancarpal arthrodesis was used to manage 55% of the RCB fractures in this report. Although RCB fracture is not associated with obvious trauma, the fracture mechanism is unknown.     

Post-traumatic paraureteral urinoma in a cat

A retroperitoneal urinoma (uriniferous pseudocyst) was diagnosed in a domestic shorthair cat exhibiting a sublumbar swelling two weeks after a road traffic accident. Plain radiography revealed a soft tissue opacity in the left retroperitoneal space. Intravenous urography and fine-needle aspiration were diagnostic. Contrast was seen pooling in the dilated ipsilateral renal pelvis and proximal ureter. Fluid aspirated from the retroperitoneal space had a creatinine level five times that of serum. Surgical drainage followed by nephrectomy and omentalisation of the pseudocyst was curative.     

Getting to know you: reputation and trust in a two-person economic exchange

Using a multiround version of an economic exchange (trust game), we report that reciprocity expressed by one player strongly predicts future trust expressed by their partner-a behavioral finding mirrored by neural responses in the dorsal striatum. Here, analyses within and between brains revealed two signals-one encoded by response magnitude, and the other by response timing. Response magnitude correlated with the "intention to trust" on the next play of the game, and the peak of these "intention to trust" responses shifted its time of occurrence by 14 seconds as player reputations developed. This temporal transfer resembles a similar shift of reward prediction errors common to reinforcement learning models, but in the context of a social exchange. These data extend previous model-based functional magnetic resonance imaging studies into the social domain and broaden our view of the spectrum of functions implemented by the dorsal striatum.     

Mathematical modeling of planar cell polarity to understand domineering nonautonomy

Planar cell polarity (PCP) signaling generates subcellular asymmetry along an axis orthogonal to the epithelial apical-basal axis. Through a poorly understood mechanism, cell clones that have mutations in some PCP signaling components, including some, but not all, alleles of the receptor frizzled, cause polarity disruptions of neighboring wild-type cells, a phenomenon referred to as domineering nonautonomy. Here, a contact-dependent signaling hypothesis, derived from experimental results, is shown by reaction-diffusion, partial differential equation modeling and simulation to fully reproduce PCP phenotypes, including domineering nonautonomy, in the Drosophila wing. The sufficiency of this model and the experimental validation of model predictions reveal how specific protein-protein interactions produce autonomy or domineering nonautonomy.
