The lumber from sugi plantations in Japan displays large intra- and intertree variation in mechanical properties, even within a stand. These variations seem to be induced by the effects of the characteristics of cultivars as well as the effects of growth traits on mechanical properties. Therefore, the effects of growth traits on mechanical properties per cultivar need to be precisely examined. In this study, we focused on the effects of growth traits, especially height-to-diameter ratio (H/D ratio), on stem stiffness per cultivar. Sixteen cultivars were classified into three groups according to the relationships between stem stiffness and growth traits. In cultivars that showed a close correlation between growth traits and stem stiffness, it was assumed that stem stiffness could be controlled to a certain extent by silvicultural practices using the H/D ratio as an indicator. In cultivars that showed a weak correlation between growth traits and stem stiffness, selecting cultivars for the production of logs with higher mechanical properties seemed to be effective; in this study, Kumotoshi, Tanoaka, and Edanaga were found to be suitable. Tree age and site index may be important factors for producing wood with higher mechanical properties.  相似文献

The relationship between 9,10-ketol-octadecadienoic acid (KODA), GAs and jasmonic acid (JA) and flower bud formation influenced by fruit load in apples (Malus domestica Borkh.) was investigated. The endogenous KODA and JA concentrations in apical buds in plants subjected to flower thinning treatment (FTT), under which all flowers were removed were higher than those in plants subjected to heavy crop treatment (HCT), under which the number of leaves per fruit was adjusted to 20 from 60 to 120 days after full bloom (DAFB). In contrast, the gibberellic acid concentrations [total of gibberellin A1 (GA1) and gibberellin A4 (GA4)] in FTT plants were low compared with those in HCT plants. The result suggests that KODA and JA in contrast to GAs may have opposite effects on flower bud formation which is significantly influenced by fruit load in apples and that KODA and JA may also be associated with flower bud formation in apples.  相似文献

Six4, a small protein secreted by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici (Fol) in tomato xylem sap during infection, triggers Fol race 1-specific resistance (I) in tomato. SIX4 is regarded as an avirulence gene. Although SIX4 is considered unique to Fol race 1, we detected this gene in the cabbage yellows fungus F. oxysporum f. sp. conglutinans (Foc) by PCR. Because the genes from Foc and SIX4 in Fol were >99 % identical at the nucleotide level, the Foc gene was designated FocSIX4. The expression of FocSIX4 was detected by RT-PCR in stems and roots of cabbage 8 days after infection with Foc. In contrast with Fol, disruption of FocSIX4 in Foc did not increase virulence to Foc-resistant cabbage cvs. Shutoku-SP and Koikaze. On the contrary, the disruptants had reduced virulence not only on Foc-resistant cultivars but also on Foc-susceptible cv. Shikidori. These results suggested that FocSIX4 is involved in virulence, but not in avirulence, in the cabbage yellows fungus.  相似文献

Summary

Changes in fruit weight, total soluble solids (TSS), sugar content and postharvest ethylene production during fruit development were compared on fruit of cherimoya (Annona cherimola Mill., cv. Big Sister) pollinated at different times (early, at the beginning of April, 1995 and late, at the end of May, 1994). Fruit weight increased by growth, independently of pollination times. Changes in TSS and sugar content were strongly affected by pollination time. In late pollinated fruits, both TSS and sugar content increased during the growth period, 110–160 d after pollination, while neither increased with fruit growth in early pollinated fruit. Moreover, changes in TSS and sugar content after ripening depended not only on pollination time but also on the growth period. With late pollination, fruit harvested after 140 d became edible after ripening. The TSS and total sugar contents, (the sum of fructose, glucose and sucrose contents) increased to about 20° Brix and above 16%, respectively. But early pollinated fruits were not edible after ripening, since total sugar content increased only to about 7%, even though they kept growing for 160 d on the tree. The maximum rate of ethylene production declined and the number of days to the ethylene peak from harvest is also reduced with growth in both cases. These changes were closely correlated with days after pollination (r>0.9) regardless of pollination time. Comparisons of accumulated temperature suggest that temperature at pollination time and during the resting period of growth affected fruit development. These results indicate that neither fruit weight nor number of days after pollination is a suitable index for harvesting time.  相似文献

Epicotyl length (ECL) of adzuki bean (Vigna angularis) affects the efficiency of mechanized weeding and harvest. The present study investigated the genetic factors controlling ECL. An F2 population derived from a cross between the breeding line ‘Tokei1121’ (T1121, long epicotyls) and the cultivar ‘Erimo167’ (common epicotyls) was phenotyped for ECL and genotyped using simple sequence repeats (SSRs) and single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers. A molecular linkage map was generated and fifty-two segregating markers, including 27 SSRs and 25 SNPs, were located on seven linkage groups (LGs) at a LOD threshold value of 3.0. Four quantitative trait loci (QTLs) for ECL, with LOD scores of 4.0, 3.4, 4.8 and 6.4, were identified on LGs 2, 4, 7 and 10, respectively; together, these four QTLs accounted for 49.3% of the phenotypic variance. The segregation patterns observed in F5 residual heterozygous lines at qECL10 revealed that a single recessive gene derived from T1121 contributed to the longer ECL phenotype. Using five insertion and deletion markers, this gene was fine mapped to a ~255 kb region near the end of LG10. These findings will facilitate marker-assisted selection for breeding in the adzuki bean and contribute to an understanding of the mechanisms associated with epicotyl elongation.  相似文献

A single non-synonymous nucleotide substitution of guanine (G) for adenine (A) at position 2254 in the viral DNA polymerase gene (encoded by open reading frame [ORF] 30) of equine herpesvirus type 1 (EHV-1) has been significantly associated with neuropathogenic potential in strains of this virus. To estimate the prevalence of EHV-1 strains with the neuropathogenic genotype (ORF30 G(2254)) in the Hidaka district--a major horse breeding area in Japan--we analyzed the ORF30 genomic region in cases of EHV-1 infection in this area during the years 2001-2010. Of the 113 cases analyzed, 3 (2.7%) were induced by ORF30 G(2254) strains. This prevalence is lower than those observed in the U.S.A. (10.8-19.4%), Argentina (7.4%), France (24%), and Germany (10.6%).  相似文献

Strawberries (Fragaria × ananassa Duch. cv. Nyoho) grown in peat-based substrate often suffer interveinal chlorosis in their immature leaves 10–20 d after planting. Based on our previous results and observations from growing practice, we hypothesized that the cause of this phenomenon could be due to drastic changes in plant nitrogen (N) nutrition in strawberries just after planting into peat bags. To determine optimal sampling time, diurnal variations in foliar ammonium (NH4)-N concentration were evaluated under greenhouse conditions. Results showed a broadly similar pattern of diurnal variation, with the rates increasing to a maximum at midday and decreasing steadily during the second-half of the light period. However, foliar NH4-N concentration was higher under sunny than under cloudy or shaded light conditions. In the second part of this study, changes in foliar NH4-N and in nitrate (NO3)-N in petioles in relation to the occurrence of interveinal chlorosis were investigated. When the plants were supplied with 30 (control) or 50% ‘Ohtsuka A’ nutrient solution for two weeks after planting, foliar NH4-N concentrations increased earlier than petiole NO3-N concentrations, and reached their peak 8 and 10 days after planting in 50% (1.90 μmol g?1 FW) and 30% (1.78 μmol g?1 FW) treatment respectively. Interveinal chlorosis was observed in immature leaves in 50% treatment about 10 days after planting while there was no chlorotic symptom in control treatment. The absence of interveinal chlorosis in immature leaves in control plants, led to the conclusion that a high leaf NH4-N concentration and related accumulation of NH4-N play an important role in triggering interveinal chlorosis.  相似文献

The morphological variations (growth habit, leaf shape, leaf color, height, stem diameter, number of branches and internodes, leaf area, blade ratio, leaf thickness, number of leaves, and total leaf area) and protein content of 53 Indonesian amaranths (Amaranthus spp.), consisting of weedy-, vegetable-, and ornamental-types, were assessed. The extent of variation in the Indonesian Amaranthus accessions were compared with the worldwide collection (26 accessions from United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and 5 ornamentals from Nepal) in the experimental field of the University of Tsukuba, Japan. The variation in average values of most morphological traits and protein content in the Indonesian accessions were similar to those of the worldwide germplasm, but the important parameters that influence vegetable yield (e.g., number of leaves and stem diameter) were superior in the Indonesian accessions. Protein content showed a positive correlation with the number of leaves, whereas a negative correlation was observed with leaf thickness. The Indonesian accession of A. viridis and A. dubius showed a great potential to be further selected as parental lines for high protein content and number of leaves. The relatively high protein content of the leaves of Celosia may also potentially serve as an alternative protein source in the tropics.  相似文献
