A meta-analysis was performed with the aim to identify factors with a relevant influence on the expression of clinical postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome (PMWS) under experimental conditions. Data from 44 studies were included in the analysis. Several variables were studied: number of pigs in the experiment, intake of colostrum, serological status against porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2), strain of PCV2 used for inoculation, the route and dose of inoculation, and use of potential triggering factors (such as co-infections, vaccinations, or immunomodulator products). Multiple correspondence analysis and log-linear regression methods were used to establish the relationships between the studied variables and the number of PCV2 infected pigs that developed PMWS. Based on the results of the meta-analysis, the most successful animal experiment aimed to develop PMWS should include: (1) colostrum-deprived pigs, (2) age of inoculation below 3 weeks, (3) high doses of PCV2 inoculum, (4) PCV2 strain from genotype 1, and (5) co-infection with another swine pathogen as a triggering factor.  相似文献

The USDA Agricultural Research Service (ARS) funded a demonstration project (1998-2002) for areawide IPM for stored wheat in Kansas and Oklahoma. This project was a collaboration of researchers at the ARS Grain Marketing and Production Research Center in Manhattan, Kansas, Kansas State University, and Oklahoma State University. The project utilized two elevator networks, one in each state, for a total of 28 grain elevators. These elevators stored approximately 31 million bushels of wheat, which is approximately 1.2% of the annual national production. Stored wheat was followed as it moved from farm to the country elevator and finally to the terminal elevator. During this study, thousands of grain samples were taken in concrete elevator silos. Wheat stored at elevators was frequently infested by several insect species, which sometimes reached high numbers and damaged the grain. Fumigation using aluminum phosphide pellets was the main method for managing these insect pests in elevators in the USA. Fumigation decisions tended to be based on past experience with controlling stored-grain insects, or were calendar based. Integrated pest management (IPM) requires sampling and risk benefit analysis. We found that the best sampling method for estimating insect density, without turning the grain from one bin to another, was the vacuum probe sampler. Decision support software, Stored Grain Advisor Pro (SGA Pro) was developed that interprets insect sampling data, and provides grain managers with a risk analysis report detailing which bins are at low, moderate or high risk for insect-caused economic losses. Insect density was predicted up to three months in the future based on current insect density, grain temperature and moisture. Because sampling costs money, there is a trade-off between frequency of sampling and the cost of fumigation. The insect growth model in SGA Pro reduces the need to sample as often, thereby making the program more cost-effective. SGA Pro was validated during the final year of the areawide program. Based on data from 533 bins, SGA Pro accurately predicted which bins were at low, moderate or high risk. Only in two out of 533 bins did SGA Pro incorrectly predict bins as being low risk and, in both cases, insect density was only high (> two insects kg(-1)) at the surface, which suggested recent immigration. SGA Pro is superior to calendar-based management because it ensures that grain is only treated when insect densities exceed economic thresholds (two insects kg(-1)). This approach will reduce the frequency of fumigation while maintaining high grain quality. Minimizing the use of fumigant improves worker safety and reduces both control costs and harm to the environment.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of ingestion of a high-carbohydrate versus a high-fat meal on relaxation of the proximal portion of the stomach and subsequent gastric emptying in horses. ANIMALS: 6 healthy adult horses. PROCEDURE: The study consisted of 2 phases. In phase I, horses were offered a high-fat (8% fat) or a high-carbohydrate (3% fat) pelleted meal (0.5 g/kg) of identical volume, caloric density, and protein content. In phase II, meals consisted of a commercial sweet feed meal (0.5 g/kg) or this meal supplemented with corn oil (12.3% fat) or an isocaloric amount of glucose (2.9% fat). Proximal gastric tone was measured by variations in volume of an intragastric bag introduced through a gastric cannula and maintained with a constant internal pressure by an electronic barostat. Rate of gastric emptying was measured simultaneously with the 13C-octanoic acid breath test. Interaction between both techniques was studied in additional experiments. RESULTS: Meals with higher carbohydrate content induced a significantly more prolonged receptive relaxation of the proximal portion of the stomach than those with higher fat content, but the accommodation response was similar. Labeling the meals with the breath test marker influenced the accommodation response measured by the barostat. Gastric emptying rates were not significantly different between meals, although those high in carbohydrate initially emptied more slowly. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: In horses, in contrast to most species, dietary fat supplementation may not have a profound effect on gastric motility.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effects of induction of capacitative Ca2+ entry on tone in equine laminar arteries and veins. SAMPLE POPULATION: Laminar arteries and veins from 6 adult mixed-breed horses. PROCEDURE: Arteries and veins were isolated and mounted on small vessel myographs for the measurement of isometric tension. Capacitative Ca2+ entry was induced by incubating the vessels with the specific Ca2+-ATPase inhibitor thapsigargin (100nM) in a Ca2+-free physiologic salt solution. Capacitative Ca2+ entry-associated contractile responses were determined by the subsequent addition of 2mM Ca2+ to the solution bathing the vessels; in some experiments, either the voltage-gated Ca2+ blocker diltiazem (10microM) or the putative capacitative Ca2+ entry inhibitor trifluoromethylphenylimidazole (300microM) was added to the bathing solution 15 minutes prior to a second 2mM Ca2+ exposure. The Sr2+ permeability of the capacitative Ca2+ entry pathway in laminar vessels was assessed by exposing the vessels to 4mM Sr2+ after induction of capacitative Ca2+ entry with thapsigargin. RESULTS: Induction of capacitative Ca2+ entry elicited robust contractile responses in laminar veins but did not increase tone in laminar arteries. In laminar veins, capacitative Ca2+ entry-induced contractile responses were unaffected by preincubation with diltiazem, attenuated by trifluoromethylphenylimidazole, and were impermeable to Sr+. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Results indicated that induction of capacitative Ca2+ entry elicits vasoconstriction in equine laminar veins but not in laminar arteries and should therefore be considered a potential mechanism by which selective venoconstriction occurs in horses during the development of acute laminitis.  相似文献

We characterized the nearly complete coding sequence of the pig 2,4-dienoyl CoA reductase 1 (DECR1) gene, which encodes an enzyme involved in the beta-oxidation of polyunsaturated fatty enoyl-CoA esters and maps on a linoleic QTL located on Chromosome 4. Sequencing of a 937-bp fragment encompassing exons 2 and 10 revealed the existence of two missense SNP at exon 2 (C181 --> G181) and exon 5 (C458 -->G458). These two SNP are associated with Val (C) --> Leu (G) and Ser (C) --> Thr (G) conservative AA replacements at positions 61 and 153 of the DECR1 protein, respectively. Moreover, DECR1 genotyping in a representative sample of 184 pigs from the Large White, Pietrain, Iberian, Duroc, and Landrace breeds demonstrated the existence of disequilibrium linkage between these two SNP (Haplotype 1: C181C458; Haplotype 2: G181G458). An association analysis between DECR1 genotype and growth, carcass, and meat quality traits in a highly selected Landrace population (n = 470) revealed differences among genotypes for isocitrate dehydrogenase activity (highest posterior density [HPD] of 90%), longissimus thoracis pH (HPD of 95%), lightness (HPD of 90 to 95%), and redness (HPD of 95%). Because these associations were not consistently found in the three available genotype comparisons, we believe that exon 2 and 5 polymorphisms at the DECR1 gene might be in linkage disequilibrium with the true causal mutation influencing isocitrate dehydrogenase activity and muscle color and pH.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To compare the rate of gastric emptying of a semisolid meal by use of the carbon 13-labeled octanoic acid breath test (13C-OBT) and gastric emptying ultrasonography (GEU) in dogs. ANIMALS: 10 healthy dogs. PROCEDURE: Food was withheld from dogs for 12 hours before ingestion of a test meal (bread, egg, and skimmed milk) containing 13C-octanoic acid. The gastric antrum was visualized by use of a 6.5-MHz microconvex transducer, and the area of the ellipse defined by the craniocaudal and ventrodorsal diameters of the stomach was measured. Samples of expired air and antral images were obtained 30 minutes before ingestion of the test meal and then every 15 minutes for 4 hours and every 30 minutes for a further 2 hours. The half-dose recovery time with the 13C-OBT (t1/2[BT]) and the gastric half emtying time with GEU (t50%[GEU]) was calculated. RESULTS: Mean +/- SD values for the t1/2(BT) and t50%(GEU) were 3.44 +/- 0.48 hours and 1.89 +/- 0.78 hours, respectively. A significant correlation was detected between the t1/2(BT) and t50%(GEU), although there was a large (1.55 hours) mean difference between these indices. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Results indicated that there was a correlation between the rate of solid-phase gastric emptying assessed by use of GEU and the 13C-OBT in dogs. Gastric emptying ultrasonography may be a useful, noninvasive method for assessment of the rate of solid-phase gastric emptying in dogs.  相似文献
