Background
It has not yet been shown that ossification of ungular cartilages (OUC) is a pathological condition. Beside heredity, factors such as sex, age, repeated concussion, local trauma, hoof and body size have been suggested as contributing factors for OUC development. By comparing radiographs of front hooves from cold-blooded trotters with different age we wanted to evaluate when development of OUC in cold-blooded trotters occurs and if and when it stabilizes in relation to age and workload. Diagnosis and grading of OUC were based on radiological field examinations of 649 Swedish and Norwegian cold-blooded trotters’ front hooves. A hundred and forty-seven of the horses were re-examined 3-13 years (mean age 9, median 8 years) after the first occasion. All radiographs were evaluated blind, using two different grading systems for OUC. Work load, in form of number of races completed, and body size score were collected from official data. Four statistical ordinal regression models were used, compared and evaluated.Results
We identified a breakpoint at 2.8 ± 0.38 years of age when ossification ends and proposed a simpler grading system with more consistent results. There was no significant correlation between body size and grade of OUC. Comparison of different statistical methods for evaluation of ordinal data revealed a piecewise linear regression model as most suitable.Conclusions
Individuals with OUC developed this condition during the stage of life when their hooves develop in size. Results from this study can assist equine practitioners when examining and for understanding this condition in their clinical work and is also beneficial for the Scandinavian equine industry when devising breeding programs. 相似文献52.
The nature and control of individual metal atoms on insulators are of great importance in emerging atomic-scale technologies. Individual gold atoms on an ultrathin insulating sodium chloride film supported by a copper surface exhibit two different charge states, which are stabilized by the large ionic polarizability of the film. The charge state and associated physical and chemical properties such as diffusion can be controlled by adding or removing a single electron to or from the adatom with a scanning tunneling microscope tip. The simple physical mechanism behind the charge bistability in this case suggests that this is a common phenomenon for adsorbates on polar insulating films. 相似文献

Meadow vipers (Vipera ursinii) are small venomous snakes whose range in Hungary has been greatly fragmented by anthropogenic habitat disturbance (especially, agriculture). We obtained DNA from a total of eight Hungarian snakes. Genetic variability at the major histocompatibility (Mhc) class I loci was much lower for these snakes than for specimens from two large Ukrainian populations. Within two Hungarian populations for which we had multiple individuals, band-sharing indices were 100 and 84.6% (versus 63.3 and 57% for the Ukraine populations). The Ukrainian snakes also displayed more RFLP fragments than the Hungarian vipers (mean 13.7 versus 9.0, respectively). In combination with reports of birth deformities, chromosomal abnormalities and low juvenile survival, these data strongly suggest that the Hungarian vipers are experiencing inbreeding depression. Genetic diversity is still present in the Hungarian vipers but among rather than within populations. Given the very low numbers of animals, the only feasible strategy to increase the genetic diversity and to save the Hungarian vipers from extinction is to implement a captive breeding program based on genetically screened animals. 相似文献

The presence of introduced brown trout (Salmo trutta) on the distribution of native crayfish (Paranephrops planifrons), native galaxiid fishes (Galaxias spp.) and invertebrate fauna was investigated in 18 West Coast New Zealand streams (8 with trout and 10 without trout) differing in chemical characteristics. Gut contents of trout, crayfish and eels were also examined to evaluate whether competition or predation could be linked to the patterns found. Abundances of crayfish and galaxiids were significantly lower in streams with trout, but in streams without trout, substrate size was one of the most important factors determining crayfish abundance. In contrast to crayfish, other macroinvertebrates were more abundant in trout streams than streams without trout and significantly more taxa were found in streams with trout. Macroinvertebrate abundance was related to environmental factors, such as pH, substrate, depth and total nitrogen. Gut content analysis showed an overlap in diet (mostly invertebrates) between trout and eels. Crayfish, however, had a more omnivorous diet where detritus was the most frequently occurring food material. Differences in chemical characteristics marked the streams with and without trout. Thus, trout were not present in streams with pH < 6.0. Crayfish and galaxiids were present in streams with pH ranging from 4.1 to 7.9, and those with pH < 6.0 may function as trout-free refuges where larger populations of these species may persist. However, other macroinvertebrate taxa may be more negatively affected by acidification than by trout. By protecting naturally acidic, brown water streams, New Zealand crayfish and galaxiid fish populations can be conserved within geographic areas where trout are present. 相似文献

In 1999, we published a report on how an introduction of 20 males into a severely inbred and isolated population of adders (Vipera berus) halted its decline towards extinction, induced a profound change in population genetic variability, resulted in a dramatic increase in offspring viability and thus in a rapid increase in numbers. Since the publication of our paper we have received numerous inquiries as to whether we have continued to monitor this population, as this is the case we herein present population demographic data gathered between 1981 and 2003. The population has continued to increase in numbers and in 2003, we collected 39 adult male adders, more than at any time over the 23-year study. Our continued work, hence, lends strong support to the importance of novel genes in enhancing the viability of inbred populations and supports the importance of preserving genetic variability in order to maintain viable wild populations. 相似文献

Bulked segregant analysis (BSA) was used to accumulate RAPD markers near the beet cyst nematode resistance locus Hslpro-1 of sugar beet (Beta vulgaris L.). Graphical genotypes constructed from RFLP data were utilized to select F2 individuals in (1) the construction of pools of plants used in the initial screening for polymorphisms, and (2) the selection of individual plants used to confirm the potential linkage. The pooled DNA samples were screened for polymorphisms using 668 RAPD primers. Forty-four candidate markers potentially linked to the region were analysed further using 14 segregating individuals. Close linkage was confirmed for 17 of the markers. Four of the RAPD markers were assigned map coordinates within the RFLP map. Three of these markers extended the RFLP map by 3cM. Altogether, the 8cM target interval contains 10 RFLP and 17 RAPD markers, corresponding to an average marker density of 0.3cM in the Hslpro-1 region. 相似文献

Aquaculture is promising in increasing the amount of fresh Atlantic cod available all year around. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of pre‐rigour filleting on fillet quality of wild and farmed cod. Pre‐rigour filleting resulted in significantly less fillet gaping than in fillets produced post rigour. The pre‐rigour fillets were, however, 12–13% shorter post rigour. In spite of the significantly lower water content of the muscle 6 days post mortem, a significantly higher liquid loss was seen in the pre‐rigour group. Differences in gaping score and muscle pH were dependent on whether the fish were wild or fed. Fillet gaping increased with storage time and was particularly pronounced for well‐fed cod. Fed cod had a significantly higher hydroxyproline (Hyp) content and significantly lower amount of glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) than wild cod. The ratio between GAGs and Hyp was thus significantly lower in fed cod. A connection between connective tissue components and fillet gaping may exist. The normal variations in hepatic levels of metallothionein, zinc and copper were studied during an annual reproductive cycle in rainbow trout of both sexes. In female fish, the total hepatic zinc levels closely followed the estradiol-17 and the LSI levels. Hence, the zinc levels rose in September, peaked in December and dropped in January. No distinct peaks were, however, observed in the whole-liver copper content. The hepatic metallothionein levels in female fish began to increase at the onset of exogenous vitellogenesis. Maximum levels were reached after estradiol-17 and LSI levels had dropped in January. In male fish no distinct peaks in either zinc or copper levels were observed. The metallothionein levels increased somewhat during the time of spermatogenesis. It is suggested that metallothionein may regulate the hepatic zinc distribution during the annual reproductive cycle in female rainbow trout, thereby ensuring the organism of a control mechanism to keep the pool of available zinc at an appropriate level. 相似文献

The effect of penetration speed on flesh firmness (FF) measurement by motorised penetrometer was examined for ‘Hayward’ (Actinidia deliciosa var. deliciosa) and ‘Hort16A’ (Actinidia chinensis Planch. var. chinensis) kiwifruit. Data was collected for penetration speeds varying from 4 to 40 mm s−1 using stored fruit of FF ∼10 N; a typical minimum FF threshold for export from New Zealand. Measurements were made on a number of instruments (Instron, GUSS FTA, HortPlus, TA.XTplus), using fruit from different orchards and in each of two different seasons. As expected, FF values increased with increasing penetration speed. A firmness-speed model was developed, based on the Maxwell rheological model for viscoelastic materials, which proved adequate in describing the FF data in terms of the effect of penetration speed. The effect of penetration speed was not adversely influenced by cultivar, season or instrument type. Within the range of fruit firmness examined - stored fruit below 20 N - it was concluded that the firmness-speed model could be successfully used to compare firmness values generated using instruments operating at different penetration speeds. 相似文献

A field study was conducted to investigate the nutrient content of green and abscised leaves of Croton macrostachyus Del. and Millettia ferruginea (Hochst.) Baker and their decomposition to return these nutrients to the soil in the short-term. Green and abscised leaves were collected from trees of comparable size in Wondo Genet, Ethiopia, and were incorporated into litterbags to decompose for a period of 12 weeks. Green leaves of C. macrostachyus had significantly higher nutrient concentrations than those of M. ferruginea. In both species, green leaves had significantly higher (P<0.05) C, N and P and significantly lower (P<0.05) lignin and polyphenol concentrations than abscised leaves. Fifty percent of the biomass applied was lost during the first 7 weeks in C. macrostachyus, which was about 3 times faster than that of M. ferruginea. The half-lives of N and P were 5–8 weeks and 4–6 weeks, respectively, in C. macrostachyus; the corresponding values for M. ferruginea were 6–8 and about 22 weeks, respectively. Only 15.7% and 26.8% of green and abscised leaves of C. macrostachyus, respectively, were recovered after the 12 weeks of decomposition. The corresponding values were about 3.5-fold and 2.5-fold higher for M. ferruginea. Generally, leaves with higher initial lignin, polyphenol, lignin:N and C:N ratios had lower decomposition and mineralization rates. In both species, removal of leaf biomass before abscission (e.g. by pruning) could enhance both the quantity and rate of nutrient return to the soil. 相似文献
