Immunohistochemical staining patterns of canine eyes affected with chronic superficial keratitis

Fourteen limbal biopsy specimens from 11 dogs with chronic superficial keratitis (CSK) were examined histologically and immunohistochemically. Ten of the 14 specimens had corneal epithelial hyperplasia and/or atrophy. Eleven of the 14 specimens had thickened epithelial basement membranes. Each specimen had cellular infiltration and lamellar disruption of the stroma. An avidin-biotin immunoperoxidase complex stain was used to detect immunoglobulin (Ig) deposition. Twelve of the 14 specimens stained positive for Ig. The staining pattern was consistent and characterized by diffuse deposition of stain in the superficial conjunctival stroma near the limbus. Four of the 12 Ig-positive specimens also stained positive in the superficial corneal stroma with 1 of these 4 also staining positive along the epithelial cell basement membrane. The diffuse pattern of stain deposition and the absence of staining of specific epithelial structures indicated that CSK is not a classical autoimmune disease similar to any disease in the pemphigus group or similar to systemic lupus erythematosus. Although the results may implicate CSK as an immune-mediated disease, nonspecific factors could not be ruled out.     

The normal microflora of the female rabbit''s genital tract.

Microorganisms associated with the vagina, cervix and uterus of rabbits were isolated and identified. The predominant microorganisms isolated from the vaginas and cervices were coagulase-negative staphylococci, micrococci, and nonfermentative bacilli. Coagulase-negative staphylococci were isolated frequently, but in small numbers, from the uteri. The pH of the rabbit vagina was found to be near neutrality. Our data indicate that the genital flora of female rabbits is relatively simple, regarding the number and type of microorganisms.     

Salt poisoning in turkey poults

A 4% mortality in 5-to-11-day-old turkey poults was attributed to 1.85% sodium chloride in the feed. The syndrome included peracute respiratory distress, ascites, and sudden death that resembled peracute heart failure. Clinical signs were observed only in the final phase of the toxicity, but progressive histologic lesions were found. Live, apparently unaffected poults showed increases in intracellular glycogen and cytoplasmic granularity, loss of striation, and early mild intercellular myocardial edema; similar but more severe histologic lesions were seen in live, ascites-affected poults. The ascites-affected poults had hydropericardium and hydrothorax which seemed to develop just minutes before death. Ultrastructurally, focal areas of myocardial cells exhibited myofibrillar disarray, lysis of myofilaments, widened Z-bands, and dilation of sarcoplasmic reticulum.     

Rupture of an aortic sinus aneurysm in a 15-year-old broodmare

A 15-year-old, Standardbred broodmare with an aortic sinus aneurysm developed rupture of the aneurysm with subsequent rupture of a tricuspid valve chorda tendinae, tricuspid regurgitation, acute right-sided congestive heart failure, and pulmonary thromboembolism. Shunting of blood from the aorta through the ruptured aneurysm into the right ventricle resulted in decreased renal perfusion and acute renal failure. Initially, treatment of the mare with analgesics, fluids, and digoxin resulted in clinical improvement, but the mare's condition deteriorated after 8 days and the mare was euthanatized due to unrelenting pain and a poor prognosis. Echocardiography was useful in diagnosis of the cardiac disease in the broodmare.     

Somatosensory-evoked potential induced by stimulation of the caudal tibial nerve in awake and barbiturate-anesthetized sheep

The somatosensory-evoked potential (SEP) from caudal tibial nerve stimulation was recorded in sheep, using surgically implanted electrodes. Peak latencies of the SEP remained stable throughout the 3- to 5-month recording period. Wave-form and peak latencies from awake sheep and concomitant changes during barbiturate anesthesia were compared with those reported for other animal species, including man. Wave form components representing activities from the primary somesthetic cortex, association cortex, and non-specific diffuse projections were differentially susceptible to barbiturate anesthesia. The neural source of the initial positive peak (mean latency = 19 ms) was resistant to anesthesia and represented primary somesthetic activity of the cortex. Sheep with surgically implanted electrodes yielded stable latencies with SEP wave-form features essentially homologous to those reported for other animal species.     

Use of an enzyme indirect antiglobulin test for the diagnosis of autoimmune haemolytic anaemia in the dog

Blood samples from 34 dogs with autoimmune haemolytic anaemia (AIHA) were studied using a variety of serodiagnostic tests. Enzyme enhancement of red cells was found to be necessary for an unequivocal laboratory diagnosis of AIHA because other techniques, the direct and the indirect Coombs' tests, often gave negative results. The most frequently encountered auto-antibody was an IgG, with a titre of 1024 or more.     

A survey of gastro intestinal helminth parasites of stray dogs in Zaria, Nigeria.

A survey of helminth parasites in stray dogs was carried out in the Zaria area. Out of 180 dogs examined 65.6 per cent (118/180) were found positive for Ancylostoma caninum, while Toxocara canis and Trichuris vulpis were detected in 41.1 per cent (74/180) and 13.9 per cent (25/180) respectively. Other helminth parasites found Taenia ovis 35 per cent (63/180) Taenia hydatigena 67.8 per cent (122/180), Echinococcus granulosus 0.006 per cent (1/180) and Dipylidium caninum 97.8 per cent (176/180).     

Characterization of endotoxin from the rumen bacterium Megasphaera elsdenii.

Phenol-water extraction of Megasphaera elsdenii, a predominant gram-negative coccus in rumens of cattle fed high-grain diets, yielded material that exhibited typical characteristics of endotoxin. The extract was lethal to mice and to chicken embryos, caused biphasic fever in rabbits, leukopenia in mice, and local and generalized Shwartzman reactions; and induced tolerance to the lethal effect of the endotoxin in mice. The material contained carbohydrate, protein, lipid, phosphorus, and 2-keto-3-deoxyoctonate, but no nucleic acid. The beta-hydroxymyristic acid was absent. Results imply that M elsdenii endotoxin has many biological and chemical characteristics common to enterobacterial endotoxin. However, the median lethal doses in mice and in chicken embryos, and minimal dose required to elicit a local Shwartzman reaction, indicate that M elsdenii endotoxin's potency is low, which may explain why the large gram-negative bacterial population in the rumen of cattle is generally innocuous.     

The effect of single and divided dose administration on the efficacy of fenbendazole against adult stages of benzimidazole resistant sheep trichostrongylids.

Sheep infected with benzimidazole resistant strains of Haemonchus contortus and Trichostrongylus colubriformis were used to compare the anthelmintic efficacy of fenbendazole given as a single dose or administered in a divided dose regime over five days. Statistical analysis showed no significant difference between the two methods of administration for H contortus. On the other hand, divided dose fenbendazole was significantly less effective than single doses against adult T colubriformis at dose rates of 5 and 7.5 mg/kg. In the case of H contortus a highly significant correlation coefficient between post treatment egg counts and worm counts (r = 0.789) was obtained. This suggests that reduction in faecal egg output following drug treatment would provide a useful field indication of anthelmintic performance of fenbendazole (and possibly related compounds) against benzimidazole resistant strains of this parasite.
