Milk production parameters of purebred Jersey (J) cows and Fleckvieh?×?Jersey (F?×?J) cows in a pasture-based feeding system were compared using standard milk recording procedures. Milk, fat and protein production was adjusted to 305 days per lactation and corrected for age at calving. Effects of breed, parity, month and year were estimated for milk, fat and protein yield as well as fat and protein percentage, using the general linear model procedure. Fixed effects identified as affecting milk production parameters significantly were breed, parity and year. F?×?J cows produced significantly more milk than J cows (6141?±?102 and 5398?±?95 kg milk, respectively). Similarly, fat and protein yields were significantly higher in F?×?J (272?±?4 and 201?±?3 kg, respectively) than in Jersey cows (246?±?3 and 194?±?2 kg, respectively). Fat and protein percentages only differed slightly in absolute terms being 4.61?±?0.04 % fat in the Jersey compared to 4.47?±?0.04 % fat in the F?×?J. Protein levels for J and F?×?J cows were 3.62?±?0.03 and 3.51?±?0.03 %, respectively. Despite a lower fat percentage, F?×?J crossbred cows may be more productive than purebred Jersey cows which may be due to heterotic effects.  相似文献

To see the deleterious effects of excess chromium (Cr) on carrot (Daucus carota L.) the cv. ‘Pusa Keshari’ was grown in refined sand under controlled glasshouse conditions with a complete nutrient solution (without Cr) for 48 days. On the 49th day, pots with two plants each were separated into three sets. One set served as a control. In each of the other two sets, Cr was supplied as dichromate at 0.1 and 0.5 mM to the basal nutrient solution. At 0.5 mM Cr toxicity symptoms appeared at d 52 (4 days after Cr supply) as reduction in growth and leaf size and loss of turgor. Old leaves became chlorotic and wilted. Chlorosis intensified and turned necrotic in another few days. These symptoms spread to next upper leaf. The development of chlorosis in leaves was delayed in plants receiving 0.1 mM Cr. At excess Cr (0.5 mM) in carrot, the biomass, concentration of chlorophylls a and b, iron (Fe), sulfur (S), and phosphorus (P) in shoots, and activity of catalase (CAT) in leaves decreased whereas the concentration of Cr and the activity of peroxidase (POX), superoxide dismutase (SOD), ribonuclease (RNAse), and acid phosphatase (A P) in leaves increased.  相似文献

Contribution of egg hatch inhibition in the overall reduction of Meloidogyne incognita numbers by Nemafric-BL phytonematicide was determined in vitro using a series of water-diluted phytonematicide solutions. Hatched juveniles were assessed at four different incubation periods. Thereafter, each phytonematicide solution was water-diluted 5 times and incubated for 5 days to evaluate the reversibility of egg hatch inhibition. At all exposure periods, except the shortest (24?h), concentration effects on egg hatch were highly significant with juvenile numbers versus increasing concentrations exhibiting quadratic relations. The models for the three consecutive exposure periods explain the quadratic relations by 95%, 94% and 98%, respectively. Results suggested that egg hatch inhibition was one of the mechanisms involved in reducing M. incognita population densities by Nemafric-BL phytonematicide.  相似文献

The genus Corchorus includes nutrient-rich indigenous leafy vegetables often grown or harvested in the wild in Africa. It has potential to contribute to food security, but there is need to improve it as a crop through plant breeding. However, not much is known about the genetic variability among Corchorus species. The aim of this study was thus to characterise the available germplasm of Corchorus accessions and investigate heritability of their agro-morphological traits. Eleven Corchorus accessions (4 South African and 7 from the World Vegetable Center) were evaluated in a field study at Roodeplaat, South Africa, for their morpho-agronomic traits using a randomised complete block design with three replications across two seasons (2015/2016 and 2016/2017). Data were subjected to ANOVA, principal component analysis and cluster analysis. Broad sense heritability, genetic advance, genetic parameters and correlations were determined among the accessions and traits. The Corchorus accessions showed significant (P < .05) differences in all the quantitative traits evaluated. The data showed significant variability among the studied Corchorus accessions in their agro-morphological traits for exploitation in future breeding programmes that in turn can contribute to the improvement of this crop.  相似文献

The economic and performance effect of supplementing smallholder cattle by substituting commercial feed with iso-nitrogenous and iso-energetic diets based on alternative protein sources was investigated in two trials. In trial 1, three diets (commercial concentrate, commercial concentrate partially substituted with mucuna, and commercial concentrate partially substituted with lablab–cowpea) compared with veld grass were allocated to 12 cattle in a complete randomised block design. In trial 2, a double complete randomised block design with 40 cattle assigned to four forage legume-based diets, a poultry-based diet and a commercial beef concentrate was carried out. Diets were offered at 1.5% of body weight daily over 56 d. Average daily weight gain (ADWG) was measured weekly in trial 1 and fortnightly in trial 2. In trial 1, ADWG was significantly (p < 0.05) higher for animals on supplements compared with non-supplemented cattle. In trial 2, ADWG was significantly highest on the groundnut stover-based diet and least on the poultry litter diet. Supplementation had a positive effect on ADWG and economic performance of smallholder beef cattle. Substitution of commercial concentrates with alternative protein sources reduced diet costs and significantly improved gross margins.  相似文献

A study was conducted to compare conception rates in 71 Tuli and 86 Afrikander beef cattle bred using either artificial insemination (AI) or the bull. Animals were bred using either artificial insemination or natural service at Matopos Research Station. Animals were grouped into three groups of heifers (parity 0; P0), second calvers (parity 1; P1) and mature cows (parity 2; P2) before being randomly assigned to one of the two breeding methods. A binary logistic regression was used for statistical analysis where breeding method (AI vs natural service) was the treatment factor and conception rate was the measured response while breed, parity and last calving date were non-treatment factors. No significant differences were observed in conception rates between breeds (P > 0.05). However, the method of breeding animals, parity and calving interval affected (P < 0.05) conception rates. The breeding method, parity and calving interval had a positive Kendall’s tau-b correlation coefficients to conception. More animals were pregnant when AI (77.6%) was used compared with natural mating (56.79%). Conception rates were significantly lower (P < 0.05) in C1 compared with C2 cattle. The odds ratio for breeding method and parity are positive and significant (P < 0.05). In conclusion, the study confirms that artificial inseminated animals had similar conception rates to naturally serviced animals for both Tuli and Afrikander breeds. As such, artificial insemination technology can be used to complement or substitute natural service in indigenous cattle’s of Zimbabwe.

The chemical nature of davanone isolated from natural davana oil via packed column preparative supercritical fluid chromatography with a carbon dioxide-based mobile phase has been defined. Analyses used to characterize davanone included nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, optical rotation, mass spectrometry, headspace solid-phase microextraction, enantiomeric purity via gas chromatography (GC), and GC-coupled olfactometry. For comparison, natural davana oil was subjected to the same types of measurements. The enriched davanone sample was nearly 100% optically pure. This indicates that fractionation of the davana oil with supercritical fluids at near room temperature had little effect on the optical integrity of the sample.  相似文献

Urea (100 and 200 kg N/ha) and the herbicides dalapon (10 kg a.i./ha) and paraquat (3.75 kg a.i./ha) were applied to a natural grassland sward growing on an oxisol (pH 5.9) to bring about herbage renovation. During the following 18 months, there appeared to be a natural increase in the hexosamine content of the untreated soil and an increase of 71–93 per cent in the treated soil. Soil enzymes were influenced both by urea and the herbicides. Urease activity was increased by 67–79 per cent by urea and the herbicides applied separately or in combination. In contrast, both urea and dalapon decreased proteinase activity by 13–18 per cent. Urea and the herbicides together accentuated the decrease in proteinase activity by 41–56 per cent.  相似文献
