The repeated elements called phytomers, which consist of leaf, node, internode and axillary bud, play an important role in
the development of modular organization in plants. Rice has the striking feature that the rate of the phytomer production
is closely synchronized with the rate of leaf emergence (phyllochron). We examined developmental changes of phyllochron by
using 10 near-isogenic lines (NILs) showing diversified growth durations in rice. The NILs were established by backcrosses
with a strain practically insensitive to photoperiod, and they consisted of early- or late-flowering NILs whose differences
of growth duration were caused by the combinations of alleles at 6 loci. The developmental patterns of phyllochron were evaluated
by means of a quartic polynomial, which fitted well in most cases. The results indicated that phyllochron greatly changed
during development, especially in late-flowering NILs as well as the recurrent parents, although the fluctuation of phyllochron
was not so marked in the early-flowering NILs. Thus, the developmental change of phyllochron was highly dependent upon the
genotypes and/or growth duration; however, it was associated with neither floral initiation nor temperature, indicating that
the change of phyllochron might reflect internal or physiological changes which occur during the life cycle of rice.

To further our understanding of wood decay in living light red meranti (Shorea smithiana) trees, microscopic characteristics of the cell and cell wall degradations of S. smithiana wood in the presence of the decay fungi, the identity of the causal fungi, and the decay potential and pattern by an isolated
fungus were investigated. Cell wall degradations, including cell wall thinning, bore holes formation, rounded pit erosion,
and eroded channel opening were clearly observed under light and scanning electron microscopy. In transverse view, many large
voids resulting from a coalition of degraded wood tissue appeared in the decayed canker zone. All these observations suggest
the well-known simultaneous decay pattern caused by white-rot fungi. By phylogenetic analysis based on the sequences of internal
transcribed spacer region of ribosomal DNA, a basidiomycete fungus isolated from the decayed wood was identified as Schizophyllum commune. The degradation caused by this fungus on sound S. smithiana wood in an in situ laboratory decay test was classified as the early stage of simultaneous decay, and showed a similar pattern

DNA was extracted from wood samples of six representativeCyclobalanopsis species (Fagaceae) growing in Japan that cannot be distinguished from one another by conventional microscopy. A part of the intergenic spacer region betweentrnT andtrnT 5 exon was amplified and sequenced. The sequences obtained from wood samples were grouped into three DNA types by a single nucleotide polymorphism as reported previously in leaf samples: I (Quercus acuta, Q. sessilifolia, Q. salicina), II (Q. myrsinaefolia, Q. glauca), and III (Q. gilva). Thus,Q. gilva can be distinguished from the otherQuercus species, and the others are separated in two subgroups based on DNA polymorphism. Previously, we reported that phyllochron of rice greatly fluctuated in the course of development under natural conditions. The present study was carried out to examine the phyllochron dynamics using the five near-isogenic lines (NILs) for heading time and the recurrent parent. The change of phyllochron was investigated under four different controlled conditions regarding daylength and temperature. Growth duration (days to heading) showed a large variation among different growth regimes as well as genotypes. Changes of phyllochron were evaluated in the genotypes by using a quartic polynomial regression that was well fitted to the change of phyllochron in the present controlled environments as previously observed under natural conditions. Phyllochron began to drastically increase after around the 5th phytomer order and decreased with the progress of reproductive development in similar manners under different environments. The pattern of phyllochron change varied from a flat to non-flat shape. The shape of the equation was affected by genotypes as well as daylengths and temperatures. In addition, the shape was closely related to the growth duration (days to heading) of the genotype, suggesting that the phyllochron might internally increase depending on the genotype controlling the heading date. Therefore, the present results showed that the sufficient examination of phyllochron dynamics is necessary for understanding a variation in the heading date of rice. 相似文献

Dehydrins are proteins associated with conditions affecting the water status of plant cells, such as drought, salinity, freezing and seed maturation. Although the function of dehydrins remains unknown, it is hypothesized that they stabilize membranes and macromolecules during cellular dehydration. Red-osier dogwood (Cornus sericea L.), an extremely freeze-tolerant woody plant, accumulates dehydrin-like proteins during cold acclimation and the presence of these proteins is correlated with increased freeze tolerance (Karlson 2001, Sarnighausen et al. 2002, Karlson et al. 2003). Our objective was to determine the location of dehydrins in cold-acclimated C. sericea stems in an effort to provide insight into their potential role in the freeze tolerance of this extremely cold hardy species. Abundant labeling was observed in the nucleus and cytoplasm of cold-acclimated C. sericea stem cells. In addition, labeling was observed in association with plasmodesmata of cold-acclimated vascular cambium cells. Fagaceae species in Japan were identified by restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) and sequence comparison of a region ofrbcL. Of nine restriction endonucleases used for digestion, three (MspI,RsaI,HaeIII) produced different restriction patterns in Fagaceae. Digestion byMspI yielded four patterns: Fagus species,Castanea crenata, Pasania glabra, and others. Digestion byRsaI andHaeIII afforded two patterns:Fagus species and others. These facts indicate thatCastanea crenata andPasania glabra can be identified byMspI restriction patterns ofrbcL. Sequence comparison of a region of therbcL gene among 20 species of Fagaceae showed that: (1) they could be divided into seven groups; (2) there is a site mutation betweenFagus crenata andF. japonica. The latter indicates that the wood of both Fagus species are identifiable at the species level, which is not the case using conventional methods. Serial changes in plasma N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) and atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) concentrations are unknown in dogs with myocardial injury. The time-course secretory responses between NT-proBNP and ANP or cardiac troponin-T (cTnT) related to myocardial infarction (MI) were investigated in this study. Six dogs were anaesthetised and the left anterior descending artery was ligated. A transient decrease in cardiac function was detected 1h after MI but returned to baseline levels within 7 days and remained so for 6 months. Echocardiographic examination revealed focal ventricular dyskinesis throughout the study. Six months following MI, the left atrium to aorta ratio increased significantly although the relative wall thickness decreased significantly from baseline. Significantly elevated plasma NT-proBNP and cTnT concentrations were detected 1 day after MI and these gradually decreased over 28 days to baseline levels without left ventricular pressure elevation. Plasma ANP was elevated significantly 6 months after MI. The NT-proBNP assay is a helpful diagnostic indicator for identifying asymptomatic acute and subacute myocardial injury whereas plasma ANP concentration mainly reflects atrial dilation. 相似文献

Fifty-four polyphenols isolated from tea leaves were evaluated for their inhibitory activities against pancreatic lipase, the key enzyme of lipid absorption in the gut. (-)-Epigallocatechin 3-O-gallate (EGCG), which is one of major polyphenols in green tea, showed lipase inhibition with an IC50 of 0.349 microM. Moreover, flavan-3-ol digallate esters, such as (-)-epigallocatechin-3,5-digallate, showed higher activities of inhibition on lipase with an IC50 of 0.098 microM. On the other hand, nonesterified flavan-3-ols, such as (+)-catechin, (-)-epicatechin, (+)-gallocatechin, and (-)-epigallocatechin, showed zero and/or the lowest activities against pancreatic lipase (IC50 > 20 microM). These data suggested that the presence of galloyl moieties within the structure was required for enhancement of pancreatic lipase inhibition. It is well-known that flavan-3-ols are polymerized by polyphenol oxidase and/or heating in a manufacturing process of oolong tea. Oolonghomobisflavans A and B and oolongtheanin 3'-O-gallate, which are typical in oolong tea leaves, showed strong inhibitory activities with IC50 values of 0.048, 0.108, and 0.068 microM, respectively, even higher than that of EGCG. The oolong tea polymerized polyphenols (OTPP) were prepared for the assay from oolong tea extract, from which the preparation effectively subtracted the zero and/or less-active monomeric flavan-3-ols by preparative high-performance liquid chromatography. The weight-average molecular weight (Mw) and number-average molecular-weight (Mn) values of OTPP were 2017 and 903, respectively, by using gel permeation choromatography. OTPP showed a 5-fold stronger inhibition against pancreatic lipase (IC50 = 0.28 microg/mL) by comparison with that of the tannase-treated OTPP (IC50 = 1.38 microg/mL). These data suggested that the presence of galloyl moieties within their chemical structures and/or the polymerization of flavan-3-ols were required for enhancement of pancreatic lipase inhibition. 相似文献

In a search for possible antitumor agents from natural sources, megastigmane glycosides and polyphenolic constituents isolated from the leaves of Eriobotrya japonica (Rosaceae) were found to inhibit the 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA)-induced activation of Epstein-Barr virus early antigen in Raji cells. Roseoside and procyanidin B-2 were among the active compounds found in an in vitro assay; these compounds were further assessed for antitumor activity in vivo in a two-stage carcinogenesis assay on mouse skin. Roseoside significantly delayed carcinogenesis induced by peroxynitrite (initiator) and TPA (promoter), and its potency was comparable to that of a green tea polyphenol, (-)-epigallocatechin 3-O-gallate, in the same assay. 相似文献

A thin film (50 to 500 angstroms thick) comprising fragments of bacteriorhodopsin (bR)-containing purple membrane was formed on an SnO(2) conductive electrode by the Langmuir-Blodgett method. The film was put into contact with a thin, aqueous electrolyte gel to construct an electrochemical sandwich-type photocell with a junction structure SnO(2)/bR/electrolyte/Au electrode. Under visible light irradiation, the bR-based photocell produced an efficient rectified photocurrent that proved to have unique differential responsivity to light intensity, which is characteristic of in vivo biological photoreceptors. An artificial photoreceptor comprising a pixel network of the bR photocell was fabricated in an attempt to study image-detecting and processing abilities of bR. 相似文献
