The effects of two environmentally disruptive activities were determined using the numbers and biomass of lizards. Sheep grazing reduces ground cover necessary for some lizard species. The use of vehicles on the desert also eliminates vegetation and adversely affects lizard populations. 相似文献

Organic debris extracted from wheatfield soils was found to be significantly more infective following 2–3 yr continuous wheat than after the fifth successive crop. Plots with added nitrogen yielded more infective debris than those without. Short periods of contact with decline soil or its suspension, reduced infection of wheat roots by Gaeumannomyces when they were subsequently grown in non-decline soil. Hyphae emerging from previously infected root pieces or culture inocula showed a positive growth response to wheat roots or their exudates. This response was negatively correlated to the distance between root and inoculum. In the presence of decline soil, hyphal response was significantly reduced. This reduction can be related to the decreased infectivity of decline soil and may help to explain take-all decline. 相似文献

The micromorphology of two soil profiles developed on turf-banked solifluction lobes and a third profile formed on a larger turf-banked solifluction terrace is described. Four elements common to the three profiles are identified.In the horizontal plane the apparent long axes of detrital grains show preferred orientation parallel to the azimuth of the line of greatest slope, and in slides cut in the vertical plane aligned with the slope direction a somewhat stronger preferred orientation (or apparent dip of the grains) is observed parallel, or sub-parallel to the ground surface gradient. Secondly, coatings of matrix material are observed on the upper surfaces of detrital grains at depths greater than 50 cm. Above this depth similar coatings also appear on the sides and lower surfaces of detrital grains. Roughly horizontal flattened patches of matrix enrichment are also observed in the three profiles. These become more frequent with depth, producing a banded pattern of matrix concentrations separated by detrital grains. Finally, large rounded pores, or vesicles, are observed in the upper 25 cm of the three profiles.These micromorphological elements are described, and suggestions are made as to their origins. 相似文献

Netminder®, a water‐based silicone barrier release coating, was highly effective in reducing biofouling of lantern nets during grow‐out/overwintering of bay scallops, Argopecten irradians irradians, in a large‐scale restoration programme in New York, USA. Compared with untreated nets, scallops held in Netminder®‐coated nets experienced reduced survival after 8 months, probably due to higher loads of epibionts on their shells. However, this was countered by higher reproductive and overall condition of scallops in treated vs. untreated nets; there were no consistent differences in shell growth in different net treatments. Although further testing is recommended under a wider range of conditions, we conclude that for the purposes of our scallop restoration work, coating nets with Netminder® would eliminate the need for a gear change in spring, thus reducing labour costs; the coating process should be refined so that Velcro closures of nets do not become sealed shut. 相似文献

Juvenile greenlip abalone, Haliotis laevigata, (mean whole weight 4.48±1.9 g, mean±s.d., n=953) were highly sensitive to ammonia as indicated by depressed growth rate and food consumption measured over 2–3 months in bioassay tanks. For growth rate expressed on a whole weight basis, the EC5 and EC50 values (5 and 50% growth reductions) were 0.041 mg FAN l−1 (Free Ammonia–Nitrogen) and 0.158 mg FAN l−1, respectively. Shell growth rates declined over the entire experimental range (0.006–0.188 mg FAN l−1). At the end of the bioassay, groups of abalone were transferred to respiratory chambers. Oxygen consumption rate increased to a maximum of 188% of control values at 0.235 mg FAN l−1 and decreased slightly at the highest concentration of 0.418 mg FAN l−1. 相似文献

Lethrinus miniatus and Lutjanus sebae are important commercial and recreational species of reef fish. Within Australian waters the former species is less widespread than the latter and has a discontinuous distribution, whilst the latter is continuously distributed in tropical Australian waters. The demographic attributes of these species (e.g. long life span, low rates of natural mortality) make them vulnerable to over-exploitation. Consequently, conservative harvest strategies including no-take zones for these species have been adopted by fisheries management agencies to control exploitation. Information on the genetic stock structure of these species is important for developing specific management strategies. However, little is known about genetic stock structures within and between east and west Australian populations of these species. The current study used the mitochondrial genome hypervariable region 1 (HVR1) of the control region to examine variation between two sites from both the east and west Australian coasts for each species. HVR1 for L. sebae did not differ genetically either within or between coasts (Fst < 0.018, p > 0.15) at the sites studied, suggesting a panmictic population structure. Similarly, L. miniatus did not differ significantly between sites sampled within coast. However, the west coast HVR1 for L. miniatus east and west coast populations, were discrete (Fst of at least 0.92, p < 0.0001). The degree of genetic sub-division between east and west coast populations indicates that they should be managed as discrete stocks. Further, when considering both species, the lower genetic (both haplotype and nucleotide) diversity in three of the four sites on the west coast of Australia, indicates that this region is genetically impoverished and neutrality tests suggest that selection is responsible. Consequently, west Australian populations will be less resilient to perturbations (e.g. fishing, climate change) than east Australian populations, which have higher genetic diversity. 相似文献

Coastal Brook Trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) populations are found from northern Canada to New England. The extent of anadromy generally decreases with latitude, but the ecology and movements of more southern populations are poorly understood. We conducted a 33‐month acoustic telemetry study of Brook Trout in Red Brook, MA, and adjacent Buttermilk Bay (marine system) using 16 fixed acoustic receivers and surgically implanting acoustic transmitters in 84 individuals. Tagged Brook Trout used the stream, estuary (50% of individuals) and bay (10% of individuals). Movements into full sea water were brief when occurring. GAMM models revealed that transitions between habitat areas occurred most often in spring and fall. Environmental data suggest that use of the saline environment is limited by summer temperatures in the bay. Movements may also be related to moon phase. Compared to more northern coastal populations of Brook Trout, the Red Brook population appears to be less anadromous overall, yet the estuarine segment of the system may have considerable ecological importance as a food resource. 相似文献

Atlantic salmon become thermally stressed when water temperatures exceed 23 °C. To alleviate this stress, they behaviourally thermoregulate by moving to patches of cold water, often forming large aggregations. These patches are known as thermal refuges. Given the consensus that climate change will increase temperatures in Atlantic salmon catchments, thermal refuges will become increasingly important in minimising summer mortalities. While the behaviour of salmonids within thermal refuges is fairly well understood, less is known about their main stem movement in search of thermal refuges or its thermal and temporal cues. We detail the results of a PIT telemetry study to investigate the main stem movement behaviour of thermally stressed Atlantic salmon parr in a temperature‐impacted river. PIT antennas placed around two thermal refuges and at the upstream and downstream limits of their surrounding reach were used to record the movement of salmonids during a heatwave. We observed parr movement at the upstream and downstream antennas 135 min prior to the occurrence of the midpoint of aggregations in the thermal refuges, indicating that Atlantic salmon parr make reach‐scale movements in search of cool water prior to aggregating. Logistic regression showed that the number of degree hours >28 °C predicted the occurrence of main stem movement with a good degree of accuracy, indicating that this temperature represents a fundamental threshold causing Atlantic salmon parr to move towards cool water. Such data could be instrumental in allowing river managers to place limits on human activity within rivers, allowing salmon populations time to recover following heat stress events. 相似文献
