Atypical bovine pestiviruses related to bovine viral diarrhoea virus (BVDV) have recently been detected in cattle from South America, Asia and Europe. The purpose of this study was to compare the clinical and virological aspects of dual infection with BVDV-1 (Horton 916) and an Asian atypical bovine pestivirus (Th/04_KhonKaen) in na?ve calves, in comparison to single infections. Milder clinical signs were observed in the animals infected with single Th/04_KhonKaen strain. Leukocytopenia and lymphocytopenia were observed in all infected groups at a similar level which correlated with the onset of viraemia. Co-infection with both viruses led to prolonged fever in comparison to single strain inoculated groups and simultaneous replication of concurrent viruses in blood and in the upper respiratory tract. Following the infections all the calves seroconverted against homologous strains. Atypical pestiviruses pose a serious threat to livestock health and BVDV eradication, since they may have the potential to be widely spread in cattle populations without being detected and differentiated from other BVDV infections.  相似文献

In‐stream wood can increase shelter availability and prey abundance for stream‐living fish such as brown trout, Salmo trutta, but the input of wood to streams has decreased in recent years due to harvesting of riparian vegetation. During the last decades, fine wood (FW) has been increasingly used for biofuel, and the input of FW to streams may therefore decrease. Although effects of in‐stream FW have not been studied as extensively as those of large wood (LW), it is probably important as shelter for small‐sized trout. In a laboratory stream experiment, we tested the behavioural response of young‐of‐the‐year wild brown trout to three densities of FW, with trout tested alone and in groups of four. Video recordings were used to measure the proportion of time allocated to sheltering, cruising and foraging, as well as the number of aggressive interactions and prey attacks. Cruising activity increased with decreasing FW density and was higher in the four‐fish groups than when fish were alone. Foraging decreased and time spent sheltering in FW increased with increasing FW density. Our study shows that juvenile trout activity is higher in higher fish densities and that trout response to FW is related to FW density and differs from the response to LW as reported by others.  相似文献

Over 250 individuals fell ill in five outbreaks caused by Cryptosporidium parvum in Finland, October–November 2012. The cases were connected by lunch meals at restaurants in four different cities. In two outbreaks, the same C. parvumIIdA17G1 subtype was found in patients’ stool samples which supports a single source of infection. Frisée salad was the only common food item served at the restaurants, and consumption of lunch salad containing the frisée salad was associated with the illness. Lunch customers who responded that they had eaten lunch salad were three times more likely to have become ill than those who had not answered whether they had eaten the salad or not (RR 2.66; 95% Cl 1.02–6.9, P‐value <0.01). Cryptosporidiosis should be considered as a causal agent in long‐lasting watery diarrhoea combined with abdominal cramps, and clinical samples should be tested for Cryptosporidium at the same time bacteria and viruses are tested. Measures to prevent contamination of ‘ready‐to‐eat vegetables’ with Cryptosporidium oocysts and methods to test frozen food samples should be developed.  相似文献

Rolled barley flakes were prepared from three different batches of grain by pearling, steaming and rolling. Autoclaved and malted barleys from the three batches were also processed in the same way. Analysis of the nine products showed that both batch of barley and process had significant effects on chemical composition and viscosity. Puddings were prepared from the products and mechanical consistency, juiciness and grain consistency were graded on both newly prepared and heated puddings by a sensory taste panel. Batch of barley had no effect on mechanical consistency but significant effects on juiciness and grain consistency. Type of processing had significant effect on all three parameters for both newly prepared and heated puddings.  相似文献

One of the defining features of plants is a body plan based on the physical properties of cell walls. Structural analyses of the polysaccharide components, combined with high-resolution imaging, have provided the basis for much of the current understanding of cell walls. The application of genetic methods has begun to provide new insights into how walls are made, how they are controlled, and how they function. However, progress in integrating biophysical, developmental, and genetic information into a useful model will require a system-based approach.  相似文献

In order to evaluate pea lectin as a resistance factor against the pollen beetle (Meligethes aeneus), transgenic oilseed rape (Brassica napus) has been produced wherein the pea lectin gene expression is driven by a pollen-specific promoter. The aim of the present study was to identify and characterise non-segregating transgenic and non-transgenic lines to be compared in various future tests for benefits and risks associated with such transgenic crop plants. Three doubled haploid (DH) populations (1436, 1440 and 1451) expected to include lectin-producing lines and two DH populations (1443 and 1449) expected to be free of lectin were produced. All five populations originated from different transformation events in the cultivar Westar. The relative amounts of DNA from the marker gene cassette were quantified by conventional as well as real-time PCR analyses and lectin concentrations were estimated by western blot analysis. Two populations with high lectin concentrations, 1436 and 1451, contained higher amounts of the marker DNA and thus more lectin gene copies as compared with 1440 which had lower concentrations of the lectin. As expected all DH lines from 1443 and 1449 were free of lectin. Maximum pea lectin concentration obtained corresponded to 3% of total soluble protein in the anthers. There were significant differences between the populations with respect to bud and flowering stage phenology as well as seed yields, but the differences were not related to their transgenic status. All in all there were 171 lines tested for phenology and transgenic status, out of which 89 with similar phenology were subjected to tests for lectin concentration and seed yield, and 20 of these lines were retested in the next generation. Finally two lines with high lectin concentrations and one with an intermediate level along with two matching non-transgenic lines were selected for future benefit/risk experiments.  相似文献

Damage caused by pine weevil (Hylobius abietus L.) to planted seedlings and cuttings of Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) was studied at five clearcut sites in south-eastern Sweden. The main objective was to compare the two types of stock in terms of attack frequency and mortality due to pine weevil feeding. Cuttings and seedlings with the same initial stem-base diameter (4 mm) were compared. Two sites were harvested and scarified shortly before planting, two were harvested shortly before planting, but were not scarified, and one was harvested 2 years before and scarified the autumn before planting. The total mortality 5 years after planting was highest, greater than 90%, at the new, non-scarified sites, and lowest, 23%, at the old, scarified site. More than 90% of the mortality was caused by pine weevil feeding. Attack frequency and pine weevil induced mortality were significantly higher among seedlings than among cuttings. Mortality due to pine weevil damage was 4–43% higher in seedlings than in cuttings after the fifth year. Of the cuttings and seedlings that were attacked in the first year, a significantly higher frequency of the seedlings were girdled. The higher resistance of cuttings to pine weevil damage may partly explain the more rapid growth of cuttings reported in other studies. However, the causes of their higher resistance need to be further investigated. The thicker bark and needles on the stem base of the cuttings could be important in this respect.  相似文献

Forestry has an important role to play as a provider of energyfrom renewable biomass and through the sequestration of carbonin biomass and soil. Forests are also habitats for a large numberof species which are important for biodiversity. In some cases,these two roles may conflict. The aim of this study was to modelthe implications of specific environmental quality objectiveson the potential of forestry to reduce net CO2 emissions byaddressing interim targets 1 and 2 in the environmental qualityobjective, sustainable forests for Uppsala County and used thisregion as a case study. The carbon stock in the biomass, thesubstitution effect, and the economic consequences associatedwith six forest management scenarios were considered. The developmentfor the scenarios was simulated at stand level using an empiricalmodel. The results of the study showed that the shortest rotationperiod was preferable to mitigate net CO2 emissions since itresulted in more biomass that could replace fossil fuel. However,such a strategy might affect sustainable policies negatively.Increasing the extent of mixed stands could be a preferablestrategy since it may achieve several objectives.  相似文献

Winter survival of 24 winter wheat lines was evaluated at three locations in south-eastern Norway in 1996-97 and 1997-98. Plants were inoculated with a mycelial suspension of Microdochium nivale or a preparation of M. nivale mycelium grown on boiled wheat grains, or they remained uninoculated. Artificially applied inoculum led to a higher disease pressure in some of the trials only. The effect of environmental conditions on variation in winter survival among wheat lines was greater than that of inoculation, and it was therefore difficult to draw a definite conclusion on the variation in specific snow mould resistance.  相似文献
