The aim of the present paper is to make a comparative study of the expression of the elements of the insulin‐like growth factor (IGF) system in different mammalian species and thus illuminate their potential role in the process of ovarian folliculogenesis in mammals. In most mammalian species, IGFs and IGFBPs (in particular IGFBP‐2 and IGFBP‐4) are considered, respectively, as stimulators and inhibitors of follicular growth and maturation. In mammalian species, IGFs might play a key role in sensitizing ovarian granulosa cells to FSH action during terminal follicular growth. Concentrations of IGFBP‐2 and IGFBP‐4 in follicular fluid strongly decrease and increase during follicular growth and atresia, respectively, leading to an increase and a decrease in IGF bioavailability, respectively. The decrease in these IGFBPs is because of a decrease in mRNA expression (IGFBP‐2) and an increase in proteolytic degradation by PAPP‐A in follicular fluid (IGFBP‐2, IGFBP‐4 and IGFBP‐5), and likely participates in the selection of dominant follicles. In contrast, levels and/or sites of expression of IGF‐I, IGF‐II, IGFBP‐4, IGFBP‐5 and type II receptor in follicular cells strongly differ between mammalian species, suggesting that these phenomena might play species‐specific or secondary roles in ovarian folliculogenesis. 相似文献
BACKGROUND: Circulating natriuretic peptide concentrations are increased in cats with myocardial dysfunction. HYPOTHESIS: Serum N-terminal fragment of proatrial natriuretic peptide (NT-proANP) and NT-probrain natriuretic peptide (proBNP) concentrations may predict the presence of heart disease (HD) and congestive heart failure (CHF). A positive relationship is also predicted among natriuretic peptide (NP) concentrations, a noninvasive estimate of left ventricular filling pressure (E/E(a)), and an echocardiographic measure of left atrial (LA) size (LA/aortic diameter [Ao]). METHODS: Serum NP concentrations were measured in 28 healthy control and 50 study cats using sandwich enzyme immunoassays. The study group comprised cats, with HD but no CHF (HD - CHF, n = 17) and cats with CHF (HD + CHF, n = 33). The relationship among NP concentrations, LA size, and E/E(a) was examined. The ability of NP to distinguish control from study cats, and HD - CHF from HD + CHF cats, was explored using receiver operator curve analysis. RESULTS: NP concentrations were significantly lower in control than in study cats (P= .0001). The NT-proBNP concentrations were positively correlated with LA/Ao ratio (rho= 0.34; P= .02) and with E/E(a) ratio (rho= 0.68; P < .05). An NT-proBNP concentration of 49 fmol/mL gave a sensitivity and specificity of 100 and 89.3%, respectively, for correctly distinguishing 96.2% of control from study cats. Pairwise comparisons of the areas under the curve identified a statistically significant difference (P= .011) between NT-proANP and NT-proBNP to distinguish control from study cats. NT-proANP and NT-proBNP concentrations were significantly higher in HD + CHF cats than in HD - CHF cats (P= .0023 and .0001, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: Serum concentrations of NT-proANP and particularly NT-proBNP were different in healthy control cats, asymptomatic cats with HD, and cats with CHF, suggesting that measurement of NP concentrations may prove clinically useful as an initial screening test for cats with suspected cardiac disease. 相似文献
With the development of the non‐surgical deep uterine (NsDU) embryo transfer (ET) technology, the commercial applicability of ET in pigs is now possible. There are, nevertheless, many factors that influence NsDU‐ET effectiveness that need to be addressed. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of the weaned recipients' parity on fertility and prolificacy following NsDU‐ET. The recipients (n = 120) were selected based on their reproductive history and body condition and grouped into three categories according to their parity: primiparous sows, sows of parity 2 and sows of parities from 3 to 5. Thirty fresh embryos (morulae and unhatched blastocysts) were non‐surgically transferred into one uterine horn of each recipient. It was possible to insert the NsDU‐ET catheter through the cervix along a uterine horn in 98.3% of the recipients. The parity had no influence on the difficulty grade of the insertions or on the percentage of correct insertions. The cervix and uterine wall were not perforated during the insertions, and vaginal discharge was not observed after transfer in any of the recipients. There were no differences in the pregnancy rates (74.8%), farrowing rates (71.2%) or litter sizes (9.6 ± 3.3) between groups. Also, there were no differences between groups regarding to the piglets' birthweights or piglet production efficiency. In conclusion, these results demonstrate that weaned sows from parity 1 to 5 are appropriate to be used as recipients in NsDU‐ET programs, which increase the possibilities for the utilization of ET in the recipient farms. 相似文献
OBJECTIVE: To obtain and analyze the electrocardiogram and systolic blood pressure of cats before, during, and after a continuous infusion of propofol. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective, uncontrolled experimental trial. ANIMALS: Twenty healthy adult crossbred male and female cats aged between 3 and 5 years, weighing 2.8-5.0 kg (mean 3.9 kg). METHODS: Cats were pre-medicated with acepromazine 0.1 mg kg(-1) subcutaneously and anesthesia was induced with intravenous (IV) propofol 6 mg kg(-1) and maintained with a continuous infusion of propofol at 0.5 mg kg(-1) minute(-1) for 60 minutes. Electrocardiographic parameters and systolic blood pressure obtained by Doppler ultrasound were recorded before pre-medication (T0), 30 (T30), and 60 (T60) minutes after beginning the continuous infusion, and 30 minutes after its cessation (T90). Repeated measures anova was used to perform statistical analysis. RESULTS: A significant decrease in heart rate was observed at all time points when compared with T0 values. The PR interval increased significantly at T60 and T90. Systolic blood pressures during anesthesia were significantly lower than at T0 and T90. CONCLUSION AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The changes seen were not clinically important in normal cats but given the reduction in heart rate and systolic blood pressure, careful consideration should be given before using this technique in patients in which hypotension or a reduction in heart rate would be poorly tolerated. 相似文献
The objective of this study was to determine the activity of steroid‐ and eicosanoid‐metabolizing enzymes in horses with varying BCSs. The BCSs of twenty non‐pregnant, anoestrous mares were determined prior to euthanasia, and tissue samples were collected from the liver, kidney, adrenal gland, ovary and endometrium. Cytochrome P450 1A (CYP1A), 2C (CYP2C), 3A (CYP3A) and uridine 5′‐diphospho‐glucuronosyltransferase (UGT) activities were determined using luminogenic substrates. The MIXED procedure of SAS was used to test the effect of BCS on enzyme activity and differences between tissues. Activity of CYP1A in adrenals was increased (p ≤.05) in BCS 5 versus BCSs 4 and 6. Activity of CYP1A in the liver was increased (p =.05) in BCS 4 versus BCSs 5 and 6. Activity of CYP1A was 100‐fold greater (p <.0001) in the liver than in the adrenal, ovary and kidney. Activity of CYP2C was 100‐fold greater (p <.0001) in the liver than in the adrenal, ovary and endometrium. Activity of CYP3A was only detectable in the liver. Activity of UGT in the kidney was decreased (p =.02) in BCS 4 versus BCSs 5 and 6. Activity of UGT was threefold greater (p <.0001) in the liver than in the kidney, whereas activity of UGT was ninefold greater (p <.0001) in the kidney than in the ovary and endometrium. In general, BCS did not alter the activity of steroid‐ and eicosanoid‐metabolizing enzymes in horses. However, tissue differences in these enzymes indicated abundant hepatic metabolism in horses, which is similar to other livestock species. 相似文献
Objective To describe the most common canine breeds affected with cataracts in Rio de Janeiro. Animals Three hundred and three dogs were included in this retrospective study. Animal ages ranged from 6 months to 14.8 years. Material and methods All records of dogs seen by the Ophthalmology Service of Policlínica Veterinária Botafogo between January 2005 and June 2008 were reviewed. Animals with cataracts were separated, and breed and age were evaluated. Results Most of the dogs presented with cataracts were Toy Poodles with a mean age of 8.2 years, followed by Cocker Spaniels and Bichon Frises. The percentage of Toy Poodles affected with cataracts was 13.8% while 33.3% of Bichon Frise was diagnosed with cataracts. Conclusions Toy Poodles are a popular breed in Rio de Janeiro. Without regulations on breeding, the prevalence of cataracts may increase rapidly. Furthermore, due to the relatively late onset of cataract formation in the Toy Poodle (mean 8.2 years of age), affected animals may have produced several litters of puppies. This study emphasizes the importance of screening for the presence of inherited ocular abnormalities such as cataracts prior to breeding. 相似文献
The presence of the South African Obscure Scale, Melanaspis corticosa (Brain) (Hemiptera, Diaspididae), was detected infesting olive trees, in Portugal. The identity of the scale insect was confirmed based on both morphological and molecular studies. Until now, this species was only known in a few African countries, including Guinea, Mozambique, South Africa and Zimbabwe. This is the first record of this species in Europe and in the Palearctic region. The scale was observed in 15 different locations, in the Algarve, since its first detection at the end of 2016. Samples were collected between 21 December 2016 and 10 March 2022, covering all seasonal periods. Most of the sampling sites resulted from private requests from farmers and proprietaries received by the Plant Protection Division of the Regional Directorate of Agriculture. Although it is considered a polyphagous species, it was not observed in other plant species, besides olive trees. The actual dispersion in the region suggests that M. corticosa became established and has been expanded its distribution since its arrival. This scale insect is a potential injurious pest of olive trees and needs to be studied to clarify its pest status and develop effective pest management strategies.
This study aimed to evaluate the effect of the exogenous recombinant bovine somatotropin (rbST) on plasma concentrations of insulin‐like growth factor I (IGF‐I), insulin and semen quality of bulls. Twenty bulls (Aberdeen Angus and Brangus) were divided by breed into two groups. Placebo group was injected with NaCl 0.9% (s.c.) and treatment group with rbST (s.c., 500 mg) at days 0 and 14 of the experiment. Immediately after semen collection, blood samples were taken on days 0, 14, 28, 42 and 56 of the experiment. Semen was also collected on day 70 of the experiment. Evaluation of sperm motility was performed at pre‐freezing and post‐thawing stage, whereas assessment of sperm membrane integrity was performed after freezing and thawing. Analysis of data revealed that the effect of treatment and treatment‐by‐collection day on plasma concentrations of IGF‐I and insulin was not significant. However, mean plasma concentrations of IGF‐I and insulin were affected (p < 0.0001) by days of blood sampling. Effect of treatment and treatment‐by‐collection day on motility of spermatozoa was similar (p > 0.05) at pre‐freezing and post‐thawing stage. Intactness of plasmalemma and tail membrane of spermatozoa at post‐thawing stage was higher (p < 0.05) in rbST‐treated group than in control. In conclusion, rbST did not affect plasma concentrations of IGF‐I and insulin, however, it did improve post‐thaw sperm membrane integrity. 相似文献
In this paper, the effects of arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi and phosphate amendments on protection of the tropical grass
Brachiaria decumbens Stapf. against metal toxicity caused by Zn, Cd, Cu, and Pb were studied in a sterilized soil. Plants inoculated with a mixture
of AM fungi (Acaulospora morrowiae, Gigaspora albida, and Glomus clarum) isolated from a heavy-metal-contaminated site or amended with P (added as triple superphosphate) exhibited marked positive
growth responses, indicating the ameliorating effects of these two factors. Soil metal concentrations needed to inhibit plant
growth by 50% were around twofold higher for AM plants as compared to those for non-inoculated ones. Similarly, phosphate
showed ameliorating effects for B. decumbens, but its effects were not related to mycorrhizal conditions. Although mycorrhiza and phosphate act independently, their protecting
effects were additive. Metal bioaccumulation factor of B. decumbens is high, especially for Cd; but AM inoculation prevents metal transference from roots to shoots, retaining these metals in
the roots. AM fungus and phosphate represent a promising tool for enhancing ground vegetation in heavy-metal-contaminated
sites. 相似文献
