The distribution of amino acid, amino sugar, and uronic acid in the epiphyseal cartilage of newborn lambs were examined to determine the influence of manganese (Mn) deficiency. Throughout the gestational period, one group (group I) of eight pregnant ewes was given a ration containing 60 mg of Mn/kg of feed and a second group (group II) of eight ewes was given a ration containing 5 mg of Mn/kg of feed. The neonatal lambs were killed, and the epiphyseal plates from various bones in the thoracic limb were removed and analyzed for glucosamine, galactosamine, uronic acid, and 17 amino acids. Concentrations of uronic acid and of the sulphur amino acids (methionine not significant, P greater than 0.05) were larger in the cartilage from the lambs born of group I ewes (60 mg of Mn/kg of ration) than in the cartilage from those of the Group II ewes (Mn deficiency). A tendency for higher hexosamine values was observed in the organic matrix of the group I lambs than of the group II lambs. However, concentrations of serine, histidine, and lysine were higher in the cartilage from group II lambs (Mn deficiency). Thus, the role of Mn in the prevention of joint abnormalities may be its influence on the mucopolysaccharide and protein composition of the epiphyseal plate.  相似文献

Shortening age at puberty of crossbred breeding bull is an important issue in the tropics. This study aimed at selecting crossbred bulls at earliest possible age with bigger scrotum and potential for donating quality semen. One hundred and 31 pre-joining crossbred bulls of Central Artificial Insemination Laboratory, Saver, Dhaka were examined. The bulls being trained by seeing semen collection from mature bulls were allowed ejaculation into the artificial vagina at homosexual mount during a 20 min time at three occasions, every three months. Eighty one of 131 bulls produced at least one ejaculate during the study and their mean +/- SD age and scrotal circumference (SC) were 20.3 +/- 4.7 months and 28.2 +/-2.7 cm, respectively. Bulls' body weight, body condition score (BCS) and SC influenced the attainment of their puberty (p < 0.05). Bull's body weight had positive effects on scrotal circumference and ejaculate volume (p < 0.05). Scrotal circumference positively influenced the percentages of normal spermatozoa (p < 0.05). Scrotal skin-fold thickness negatively influenced the proportion of spermatozoa with normal head (p < 0.05). Based on age at first ejaculate and SC, 29.6% bulls (n = 24) were selected by cluster analysis. Selected bulls had mean +/- SD age 17.9 +/- 2.2 months, body weight 287.3 +/-48.6 kg, SC 30.5 +/- 1.5 cm, ejaculate volume 3.4 +/- 1.3 ml, sperm motility 50.8 +/- 17.2%, total spermatozoa per ejaculate 2541.9 +/- 1699.2 million and normal spermatozoa 81.5 +/-14.5%. The selected pubertal bull group was different from the unselected pubertal bulls at MANOVA (p < 0.0001). About 30% of pubertal crossbred bulls can be selected with shorter age and larger scrotum at puberty under conditions prevailed in Bangladesh.  相似文献

Antagonistic fungi (Aspergillus niger CA and Penicillium chrysogenum CA1), plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) (Burkholderia cepacia 4684 and Bacillus subtilis 7612) and AM fungi (Glomus intraradices KA and Gigaspora margarita AA) were assessed alone and in combination for their effects on the growth of tomato and on the reproduction of Meloidogyne incognita in glasshouse experiments. Application of antagonistic fungus, PGPR, or AM fungus alone or in combination significantly increased the length and shoot dry mass of plants both with and without nematodes. The increase in shoot dry mass caused by Gl. intraradices KA in plants without nematodes was greater than that caused by PGPR or antagonistic fungi. Similarly, the increase in shoot dry mass caused by Bu. cepacia 4684 in plants with nematodes was greater than that caused by P. chrysogenum CA1. Application of Bu. cepacia 4684 caused a 36.1% increase in shoot dry mass of nematode-inoculated plants followed by Ba. subtilis 7612 (32.4%), A. niger CA (31.7%), Gl. intraradices KA (30.9%), Gi. margarita AA (29.9%) and P. chrysogenum CA1 (28.8%). Use of Bu. cepacia 4684 with A. niger CA caused a highest (65.7%) increase in shoot dry mass in nematode-inoculated plants followed by Ba. subtilis 7612 plus A. niger CA (60.9%). Burkholderia cepacia 4684 greatly reduced (39%) galling and nematode multiplication, and the reduction was even greater (73%) when applied with A. niger CA. Antagonistic fungi had no significant effect on root colonization caused by AM fungi. Applying Bu. cepacia 4684 with A. niger CA may be useful in the biocontrol of M. incognita on tomato.  相似文献

Hyacinth bean (Lablab purpureus L.) serves as a good source of vegetable proteins in human diet, and its seeds and pods contain as much as 20–28% protein. The bean contains tyrosinase enzyme, which has potential use for the treatment of hypertension. However, plant biological yield appears to be comparatively low in Aligarh soil in this region of India (Western Uttar Pradesh). A hypothesis was designed to address whether foliar application of triacontanol (TRIA) could enhance the crop productivity as well as crop quality. TRIA is known to be a potent plant growth promoting substance for many agricultural and horticultural crops. The hyacinth bean plants grown in soil containing pots, were sprayed with five concentrations of TRIA (10−0 (Control), 10−8, 10−7, 10−6 and 10−5 M) at 15-day intervals. The plant fresh and dry weights, leaf-area, number and dry weight of nodules per plant, total chlorophyll and carotenoid content, nitrate reductase activity, carbonic anhydrase activity, nodule-nitrogen content, leghemoglobin content and leaf N, P, K and Ca contents were analyzed at 60, 90 and 120 days after sowing (DAS). Net photosynthetic rate, transpiration rate and stomatal conductance were measured only at 90 DAS. The protein content plus carbohydrate and tyrosinase activity were analyzed in the seeds. Foliar spray of 10−6 M TRIA significantly stimulated most of the studied attributes. At the highest concentration (10−5 M TRIA), values of all attributes were significantly decreased at all three stages. For example, 10−6 M TRIA increased seed-yield and -protein content by 56.3 and 14.5%, respectively when compared to unsprayed plants. TRIA also stimulated the activity of tyrosinase when compared to the control plants.  相似文献

The Lake Naivasha fishery is constituted by three introduced species, Sarotherodon leucostictus, Tilapia zillii and Micropterus salmoides. No indigenous species are now found in the lake. S. spilurus niger, another introduced species, and hybrids of S. s. niger × S. leucostictus, abundant in 1961, have almost completely disappeared.The annual catch of Sarotherodon-Tilapia and M. salmoides between 1968 and 1974 ranged from 109·2 to 1479·6 metric tons and 7·9 to 471·9 metric tons respectively.S. leucostictus is a bottom feeder (chironomid larvae 64°24%, detritus 20·58%), T. zillii feeds on aquatic macrophytes (76·62%) and M. salmoides feeds almost exclusively on crayfish (78·25%). A major portion of the fish food present in the lake is left unused.The yield, which has progressively declined since 1968, could be increased considerably by introducing certain management measures. This paper describes the embryonic development of the common cutworm Spodoptera litura (Fabricius) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) which is divided into eight embryonic stages, through variations in the egg's contents. Experiments were conducted on the eggs ofS. litura under laboratory conditions. The highest concentration of the protein (min.-max.: 32-! 40 lag/egg) and the lowest of the carbohydrate (min.-max.: 3.0-44.0 lag/egg) were obtained; similarly, the DNA content was smaller (min.-max.: 1.0-38.2 lag/egg) than the RNA (min.-max.: 9.2-360.0 lag/egg) throughout the embryogenesis. Three peaks of ecdysteroid titre were observed which were responsible for appearance of particular events during embryogenesis. The last highest peak of 400_+33.4 lag/egg was appeared at 84 h after oviposition when larva was ready to hatch. Therefore, it is concluded that eight embryonic stages in S. litura were characterized by fluctuation in the egg's contents, which were responsible for gradual-progressive embryonic development. The egg-larval development did not show a normal distribution of embryonic developmental-time.  相似文献

An 8-week growth trial was conducted to assess the effect of dietary protein on growth, feed utilization, protein retention efficiency, and body composition of young Heteropneustes fossilis (10.02 ± 0.09 g; 9.93 ± 0.07 cm). Isocaloric (4.15 kcal g−1, GE) diets with varying levels of protein (25, 30, 35, 40, 45, and 50% of the diet) were fed near to satiation to triplicate groups of fish. Optimum dietary protein was determined by analyzing live weight gain (LWG%), feed conversion ratio (FCR), protein efficiency ratio (PER), specific growth rate (SGR%), and protein retention efficiency (PRE%) data. Maximum LWG% (167), best FCR (1.42), PER (1.75), SGR (1.76), and PRE (31.7%) were evident in fish fed 40% protein diet (Diet 4). Body protein data also supported the above level. However, second-degree polynomial regression analysis of the above data indicated that inclusion of dietary protein in the range of 40–43% is optimum for the growth of young H. fossilis.  相似文献
