The biological activity of L-dehydroascorbic acid (DHA), which is easily formed from L-ascorbic acid (ASC) during storage and cooking processes, has been considered to be equivalent to that of ASC on the basis of studies made several decades ago, when a specific method to determine ASC was not available. The nutritional activity of orally ingested DHA has now been evaluated by comparing ASC concentrations in 12 tissues of rats administered four different doses of ASC. Determinations were made by using the specific and sensitive method, which had been developed by us. Here it is shown that the efficiency of DHA was almost 10% of that of ASC on a molar basis, based on animal experiments using the inherently scorbutic ODS rat, which is a convenient human model animal to investigate the metabolism of vitamin C. On the basis of these findings, it is proposed that it is necessary to reevaluate the nutritional requirement of vitamin C based on both ASC and DHA contents of foods. 相似文献

Pleurotus citrinopileatus Singer has recently become a popular delicacy in East Asian countries. We prepared a methanol extract, soluble fractions
from the methanol extract, and a hot water extract of the fruiting bodies of P. citrinopileatus. The biological activities such as melanin biosynthesis inhibition, tyrosinase inhibition, antioxidant activities [1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl
(DPPH) radical scavenging, oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC), and superoxide dismutase (SOD)-like activity], antibacterial
activities, and antihyaluronidase activities of these extracts were evaluated. We found that the n-hexanesoluble, diethyl ether-soluble, and ethyl acetate-soluble fractions exhibited melanin biosynthesis inhibition in B16
melanoma cells, as well as antioxidant (ORAC) and antibacterial activities. However, the n-butanol-soluble and water-soluble fractions and the methanol and hot water extracts exhibited antioxidant (DPPH radical scavenging,
SOD-like activity) and antihyaluronidase activities. These results indicate that the fruiting bodies of P. citrinopileatus have the potential to be used as an ingredient in skin cosmetics. 相似文献

We found that, in the mouse visual cortex, action potentials generated in a single layer-2/3 pyramidal (excitatory) neuron can reliably evoke large, constant-latency inhibitory postsynaptic currents in other nearby pyramidal cells. This effect is mediated by axo-axonic ionotropic glutamate receptor-mediated excitation of the nerve terminals of inhibitory interneurons, which connect to the target pyramidal cells. The water extract of guar meal ( Cyamopsis tetragonolobus) was examined for its foamability. Compared with egg white, the extract showed an extraordinary foam stability: no drainage after 3 h of standing in contrast to 65% drainage for egg white at the same protein concentration. The acid-precipitated protein from the extract was responsible for the high foamability and designated guar foaming albumin (GFA). The foaming activity of GFA was 20 times higher than that of egg white. GFA consisted of two subunits with molecular masses of 6 and 11 kDa linked to each other through disulfide bonds. The cleavage of disulfide bonds in GFA affected the foamability only slightly. GFA remarkably decreased the surface tension of water at low protein concentrations. Immunoblotting analysis demonstrated that GFA did not react to the antisera from allergic patients against plant food. These results suggest that GFA serves as an effective food additive in developing protein-stabilized foam. 相似文献

Inflammatory airway disease (IAD) is a common cause of poor performance, interruption of
training and premature retirement in racehorses. It is also reported that up to 80% of
horses are affected at some point in the first years of training in UK and Australia.
However, no studies with regard to the information on occurrence of IAD in Japanese
Thoroughbred racehorses have been reported. To investigate the occurrence and the
characteristics of IAD, epidemic research including endoscopic examination of the airway
tract and trachea wash was conducted for Thoroughbred racehorses presenting coughs or poor
performance which airway tract disease was suspected stalled in training facility managed
by Japan Racing Association. Fifty-six out of 76 Thoroughbred racehorses (73.7%)
presenting coughing or poor performance were diagnosed as IAD. Mean incidence rate of IAD
was 0.3% and it has been confirmed that constant number of IAD exists in Japan. Up to
35.7% of IAD horses showed upper airway abnormalities in some extent. There was a trend
for IAD horses to use wood shavings for bedding and fed hay from the ground compared with
the control group. Therefore, improvement of stabling environment may aid in preventing
IAD. This study demonstrated that Japanese Thoroughbred racehorses are affected by IAD
likewise other countries as well as demonstrated the characteristics of IAD which may
contribute to the clarification of the pathogenesis of IAD. 相似文献

Cytology of tracheal aspirates, tracheal endoscopic and blood tests were carried out to
86 Thoroughbred racehorses presenting coughs or poor performance which were suspected to
have lower respiratory tract disease (LRTD) to assess the conditions of the disorders.
Racehorses were classified into coughing (66 horses) and non-coughing (20 horses) groups
based on clinical symptoms. Nine Thoroughbred racehorses without respiratory abnormality
were used as controls. Assessment of grades of airway mucus, cytology of tracheal
aspirates and serum amyloid A (SAA), fibrinogen (Fbg) and pulmonary surfactant protein D
(SP-D) measurements were performed. Relationships between age, gender and racing careers
were also investigated to understand the characteristics of LRTD in racehorses. Mean age
was significantly higher in non-coughing group compared to coughing group. Existence of
racing career and number of starts were significantly greater in non-coughing group
compared to coughing group. On the other hand, grades of airway mucus were significantly
higher in coughing group compared to control group. Percentages of neutrophils in tracheal
aspirates were significantly higher in coughing group compared to non-coughing and control
groups. SAA, Fbg and SP-D were higher in coughing group compared to non-coughing and
control groups indicating that condition of coughing group is in the acute phase. Positive
rate of inflammatory airway disease was significantly higher in coughing and non-coughing
groups compared to control group. It was concluded that carrying out comprehensive
evaluation including investigation on SAA, Fbg and SP-D analysis with airway assessment to
Thoroughbred racehorses which were suspected to have LRTD are useful procedure to
understand the pathological condition which aid to initiate appropriate treatment,

A 2 × 3 factorial feeding trial was conducted to determine effects of dietary Ca/P ratio and dietary microbial phytase on growth, mineral digestibility and vertebral mineralization in tiger puffer. The treatments consisted of three levels of Ca/P ratios (0.5, 1.0 and 1.5) combined either with phytase (2000 FTU kg?1 diet) or without supplementation, respectively. The Ca/P ratios were achieved by supplementing calcium at 0, 6 and 12 g kg?1 combined with the same level of inorganic P at 5 g kg?1. After a 50‐day feeding trial, puffer fish fed the diet at low Ca/P ratio (0.5) together with phytase had significantly higher growth rate and feed intake (FI) than other groups. Both dietary Ca/P ratio and phytase supplement were independent effects on plasma minerals and alkaline phosphatase. Interactive effect between both dietary treatments was observed on P and Zn contents in vertebrae and whole body. P and Zn digestibilities tended to increase with increased Ca/P ratio from 0.5 to 1.0, especially when phytase was supplemented. In conclusion, fish fed a diet with highest Ca/P ratio (1.5) showed the poorest growth performance and nutrients utilization. Dietary Ca/P ratio of 0.5 (without Ca supplement) with 2000 FTU phytase per kg would be the optimum combination in the diet of tiger puffer. 相似文献

Because the first step in the triggering of food allergy is the permeation of the allergen through the intestine, enhancement of the intestinal barrier function is thought to be effective for preventing food allergy. In this study, a peptide that inhibits ovalbumin (OVA) permeation in an in vitro Caco-2 cell model was isolated from enzymatic hydrolyzate of cheese (EHC). Amino acid sequence analysis identified the active peptide as GPIVLNPWDQ, a sequence identical to amino acids 102-111 of alphas2-casein. The decapeptide significantly inhibited OVA permeation at a concentration of 10(-6) M. In addition, it was found that a pentapeptide half, NPWDQ, is essential for the inhibitory activity because NPWDQ but not GPIVL had nearly the same inhibitory activity as GPIVLNPWDQ. The possibility exists that EHC and/or peptides possessing the NPWDQ sequence can be practically applied to the prevention of food allergy. 相似文献
