The locations of the pole and rotation axis of asteroid 25143 Itokawa were derived from Asteroid Multiband Imaging Camera data on the Hayabusa spacecraft. The retrograde pole orientation had a right ascension of 90.53 degrees and a declination of -66.30 degrees (52000 equinox) or equivalently 128.5 degrees and -89.66 degrees in ecliptic coordinates with a 3.9 degrees margin of error. The surface area is 0.393 square kilometers, the volume is 0.018378 cubic kilometers with a 5% margin of error, and the three axis lengths are 535 meters by 294 meters by 209 meters. The global Itokawa revealed a boomerang-shaped appearance composed of two distinct parts with partly faceted regions and a constricted ring structure.  相似文献

Taxonomy of the pen shell (genus Atrina) in East Asia has been confused because of the plasticity of the shell morphology and lack of unified morphological characteristics. We analyzed the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) sequence of the pen shell sampled from Ariake Bay and Seto Inland Sea, western Japan. All individuals were identified as the scaly form based on external morphology; however, their COI sequences were comprised of two distinct lineages. The sequence divergence between the two was 8.3%, indicating the high possibility that they are different species. The scaly form of the pen shell in Japan is one of the target species for resource enhancement, therefore COI lineage identification of broodstock individuals is critically important to avoid producing hybrid seed. We developed a loop-mediated isothermal amplification method that enables specific detection of the two lineages. This method can contribute to reducing the cost and time required for genotyping broodstock individuals prior to seed production.  相似文献

Purpose

In Japan, the excavated soils produced from constructions projects, which contain relatively low levels of arsenic (As), are considered as a potential concern if they could release significant amount of As to the environment. The aim of this study was to investigate the As leaching from excavated alkaline soils and, in particular, the influence of drying methods, pH of extracting solution, and consecutive washing on As leaching from these soils.

Materials and methods

Four excavated alkaline soils obtained from different construction sites in Tokyo, Japan, were used in this study. The soils were pretreated by three drying methods (air-dried, 40 °C-dried, and freeze-dried). Sequential extraction procedure was applied to partition As into five operationally defined chemical fractions. Batch leaching tests (initial pH-controlled leaching test and consecutive washing test) were conducted to investigate the As release under different leaching conditions.

Results and discussion

The As contents in the four soils were 9.22, 79.4, 6.75, and 11.7 mg kg?1, respectively, and As was primarily associated with the residual phase. Arsenic leaching was strongly dependent on the extracting solution pH values. Strongly acidic extracting solution (pH 2) led to circumneutral leachates and limited As mobility, whereas the strong alkaline-extracting solution (pH 12) greatly enhanced the As release from these soils. The consecutive washing test results revealed a long-term release of As from these excavated soils. The pollution potential indices (PPIs) were successfully used to evaluate the pollution threat of As leaching from excavated soils. In addition, different drying methods resulted in variations in the short- and long-term release of As from these excavated soils.

Conclusions

The results revealed that the soil pretreatment and the leaching conditions should be considered if we want to use batch tests for the contamination assessment of excavated urban soils from construction projects. Different drying methods and single extraction may lead to misestimation of the As pollution level. High extraction efficiency with strong alkaline-extracting solution (pH 12) reveals that it could potentially be used to wash As from excavated alkaline soils.

ABSTRACT

Soil phosphorus (P) forms have been practically defined as chemically fractionated pools. A knowledge of the abundance and diversity of P forms in soil, and the factors affecting them, will lead to better soil management. However, little is known about the differences in P forms among soils with different geological properties in tropical Africa. The aim of this study was to investigate the P forms in soils with different physicochemical properties formed under different geological conditions in southern Tanzania and to identify the factors affecting the P forms in these soils. In total, 37 surface soil samples were collected from three geological groups; the plutonic (mainly granite) rock (PL) group, the sedimentary and metamorphic rock (SM) group, and the volcanic ash (V) group. Soil P was sequentially extracted by NH4Cl, NH4F, NaHCO3, NaOH + NaCl, and HCl, and inorganic (Pi) and organic P (Po) in each fraction were determined. The lowest total P was in the PL group (average, 360 mg P kg-1) because of the high sand content. Iron (Fe)-P (NaOH-Pi) was the major form in this group, accounting for 8.4% of total P. In the SM group (average total P, 860 mg P kg-1), Fe-P was the major form in most, accounting for 7.8% of total P. Soils in the SM group occasionally had high calcium (Ca)-P due to application of chemical fertilizer at the collection site. The V group had the highest total P (average, 1600 mg P kg-1) and its major P form was Ca-P, which was possibly derived from primary minerals (i.e., apatite), accounting for 14% of total P. In addition, the high oxalate-extractable Al possibly caused the accumulation of Al-P in the V group. Oxalate-extractable Fe generally increased with increasing Fe-Pi, while oxalate-extractable Al increased with increasing organic P and Al-Pi in soils in all three geological groups. These results demonstrate that the soil P forms differ greatly among sites in southern Tanzania with different geological conditions and associated soil properties.  相似文献

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effects of inflammation, induced by intratracheal instillation (i.t.) of quartz as an environmental factor in the lung or drinking of dextran sulfate sodium (DSS) as an environmental factor in the colon on lung tumors in female A/J mice initiated with NNK. For comparison, colonic preneoplastic lesions, aberrant crypt foci (ACF), were also assessed. A/J mice at 6 weeks of age were divided into 5 groups, and Groups 1, 2 and 3 were pretreated with NNK (2 mg / 0.1 ml saline / mouse, intraperitoneal injection) at week 0. For a week, 2% DSS in drinking water was administered to the mice in Groups 2 and 4 beginning in week 1. In week 2, the mice of Groups 3 and 5 were exposed to intratracheal instillation of quartz (0.1 mg/rat) suspended in 25 μl saline. The experiment was terminated after 16 weeks. The results for the lung tumors and colonic ACFs showed a lack of modifying effects of the inflammation in either site. Hematologically and histopathologically, the inflammation induced by 0.1 mg quartz in the lung and 2% DSS in the colon was lacking or only mild at the end of 16 weeks. These results suggest that there may be differences in sensitivity to inflammation that determine tumor promoting potential.  相似文献

Mentha is a complex genus encompassing many species as a consequence of their interspecific hybridization and polyploidy. Southeast Asian mints have been poorly distinguished though they are widely used for culinary and medical purposes. In this study, we have analyzed Southeast Asian mints and known varieties as well as a related Lamiaceae species (Nepeta sp.) using simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers and leaf morphology. Two types of mints were clearly distinguished based on their venation pattern and leaf shape index. We developed 12 SSR markers that allowed good amplification in the Mentha and another Lamiaceae species. In the SSR-based phylogram, the Mentha lines could be delimited into groups I–VI. The Southeast Asian mints divided into groups I and II, and the phylogram separated most of the available species, with groups I and II containing the known species M. × cordifolia and M. arvensis, respectively. The separation of the two groups was supported by a population structure analysis. The SSR markers developed in this study enabled the simultaneous classification of mints and will help improve our understanding of the genetic composition of known mint varieties and as yet unclassified Southeast Asian mints.  相似文献
