We measured the photosynthetic capacity (P(max)) of plantation-grown red spruce (Picea rubens Sarg.) during two winter seasons (1993-94 and 1994-95) and monitored field photosynthesis of these trees during one winter (1993-94). We also measured P(max) for mature montane trees from January through May 1995. Changes in P(max) and field photosynthesis closely paralleled seasonal changes in outdoor air temperature. However, during thaw periods, field photosynthesis was closely correlated with multiple-day temperature regimes, whereas P(max) was closely correlated with single-day fluctuations in temperature. There was a strong association between short-term changes in ambient temperature and P(max) during the extended thaw of January 1995. Significant increases in P(max) occurred within two days of the start of this thaw. Repeated measurements of cut shoots kept indoors indicated that temperature-induced increases in P(max) can occur within 3 h. Although significant correlations between P(max) and stomatal conductance (g(s)) or intracellular CO(2) concentration (C(i)) raised the possibility that increases in P(max) resulted from increases in stomatal aperture, fluctuations in g(s) or C(i) explained little of the overall variation in P(max). Following both natural and simulated thaws, P(max) increased considerably but plateaued at only 37% of the mean photosynthetic rate reported for red spruce during the growing season. Thus, even though shoots were provided with near-optimal environmental conditions, and despite thaw-induced changes in physiology, significant limitations to winter photosynthesis remained.  相似文献

Formation of ordered structures from disordered amylose is practically important. The thermal behavior of high-amylose maize starches was studied during cooling, following heating, and during subsequent reheating. Four commercial high-amylose genotype maize starches with varying amylose contents (ae du, ae su2, and ae [nominally both 50 and 70% amylose]) were heated to either 120, 140, 160, or 180°C, cooled to 5°C, and reheated to 180°C in a differential scanning calorimeter. Each starch was studied with its native lipid, as well as in reduced-lipid and lipid-free form. On cooling of lipid-containing starches, two distinct exotherms were observed and attributed to amylose-lipid complex formation and to amylose chain association. A distinct exotherm at ≈75°C was attributed to amylose-lipid complex formation. The exotherm attributed to amylose chain association on cooling varied according to the initial heat treatment, lipid level, and starch type. Starches with higher amylose contents showed larger exotherms on cooling. For initial heat treatments to 120 or 140°C, a broad exotherm beginning at ≈95°C was observed on cooling. In contrast, for initial heat treatments to 160 and 180°C, a sharper exotherm with a peak temperature below ≈55°C was observed. Upon reheating, samples that had been initially heated to 120 or 140°C showed a peak at >140°C that was attributed to the melting of ordered amylose. Starches initially heated to 160 or 180°C did not show this peak. This work illustrates that initial heating temperature, as well as lipid content and amylose content, all affect amylose chain association during cooling. Thus, this work suggests strategies for controlling ordering of amylose during processing.  相似文献

Wild potato germplasm represents a unique, diverse and accessible resource for disease and pest resistance, along with useful agronomic traits that may be introgressed into the cultivated potato (Solanum tuberosum L.). Hybridization of diploid wild Solanum species with haploids (2×) of cultivated potato (4×) is generally an effective technique for introducing genetic diversity and desirable traits into potato. However, in this study, hybridization barriers were found in crosses between S. tuberosum haploids and the wild species S. raphanifolium. Male sterility, likely due to nuclear-cytoplasmic interactions, was observed in some haploid tbr?×?S. raphanifolium hybrids. In addition, pollen-pistil incompatibilities were observed in backcross, F2, and reciprocal cross hybridization attempts that failed to produce seed. More crosses were successful when F1 clones were crossed as females to wild clones than to cultivated clones. When crosses were made in the other direction, with F1 hybrids used as male parents, seeds were almost never produced.  相似文献

Background  

Phages are thought to play a crucial role in the maintenance of diversity in natural bacterial communities. Theory suggests that phages impose density dependent regulation on bacterial populations, preventing competitive dominants from excluding less competitive species. To test this, we constructed experimental communities containing two bacterial species (Pseudomonas fluorescens and Pseudomonas aeruginosa) and their phage parasites. Communities were propagated at two environmental temperatures that reversed the outcome of competition in the absence of phage.  相似文献
