Data envelopment analysis is used to assess the efficiency of broadband Internet adoption and use in the U.S. Analyses at the state level from 2005 to 2007 suggest that broadband adoption and use is not equally efficient across the U.S. states. Although the instantaneous efficiencies are relatively high for many states, the changes in total factor productivity suggest that the efficiency of broadband adoption and use still increases over time. Moreover, it is observed that efficiency values are often spatially autocorrelated, which suggests spatial dependency from spillovers or interstate competition. This leads to a particular spatial diffusion pattern in broadband adoption. Although states have different strategies in support of broadband expansion they need to identify their shortcomings and use the appropriate mix of inputs (and outputs) to improve their efficiencies.  相似文献

The adsorption capacity of seven inorganic solid wastes [air-cooled blast furnace (BF) slag, water-quenched BF slag, steel furnace slag, coal fly ash, coal bottom ash, water treatment (alum) sludge and seawater-neutralized red mud] for Cd2+, Cu2+, Pb2+, Zn2+ and Cr3+ was determined at two metal concentrations (10 and 100 mg?L?1) and three equilibrium pH values (4.0, 6.0 and 8.0) in batch adsorption experiments. All materials had the ability to remove metal cations from aqueous solution (fly and bottom ash were the least effective), their relative abilities were partially pH dependant and adsorption increased greatly with increasing pH. At equimolar concentrations of added metal, the magnitude of sorption at pH 6.0 followed the general order: Cr3+????Pb2+????Cu2+?>?Zn2+?=?Cd2+. The amounts of previously sorbed Pb and Cd desorbed in 0.01 M NaNO3 electrolyte were very small, but those removed with 0.01 M HNO3, and more particularly 0.10 M HNO3, were substantial. Water treatment sludge was shown to maintain its Pb and Cd adsorption capability (pH 6.0) over eight successive cycles of adsorption/regeneration using 0.10 M HNO3 as a regenerating agent. By contrast, for BF slag and red mud, there was a very pronounced decline in adsorption of both Pb and Cd after only one regeneration cycle. A comparison of Pb and Cd adsorption isotherms at pH 6.0 for untreated and acid-pre-treated materials confirmed that for water treatment sludge acid pre-treatment had no significant effect, but for BF slag and red mud, adsorption was greatly reduced. This was explained in terms of residual surface alkalinity being the key factor contributing to the high adsorption capability of the latter two materials, and acid pre-treatment results in neutralization of much of this alkalinity. It was concluded that acid is not a suitable regenerating agent for slags and red mud and that further research and development with water treatment sludge as a metal adsorbent are warranted.  相似文献

The adsorption of As(III), As(V), Se(IV) and Se(VI) by seawater neutralized red mud and alum water treatment sludge was investigated and compared using the batch adsorption technique. For water treatment sludge, adsorption of As(V), Se(IV) and Se(VI), at equimolar concentrations of added metalloid, declined with increasing pH. The decline was rapid above pH?4.0 for Se(VI), above pH?5.0 for Se(IV) and above pH?6.0 for As(V). Adsorption of As(III) increased with increasing pH up to pH?9.0 and then declined. For red mud, adsorption of As(V), Se(IV) and Se(VI) showed a maximum at about pH?5.0 and for As(III) adsorption remained relatively constant over the pH range 2.0?C10.0 after which it declined. Water treatment sludge removed 50?% or more of solution As(V) between pH?2.0 and 10.8, Se(IV) between 2.0 and 8.9, Se(VI) between 2.0 and 5.8 and As(III) between 8.4 and 10.9. By contrast, red mud showed less than 25?% adsorption of added Se(VI) and As(III) over the entire pH range tested (2.0?C12.0) and reached 50?% or more for As(V) only over the pH range 4.0?C6.9 and for Se(IV) between pH?4.3 and 5.6. At pH?5.0, adsorption of As(III) and Se(IV) was better described by the Langmuir than Freundlich equation but the reverse was the case for As(V) and Se(VI). Kinetic data for adsorption of all four oxyanions onto both adsorbents correlated well with a pseudo-second-order kinetic model suggesting the process involved was chemisorption. NaOH was more effective at removing adsorbed metals from both adsorbents than HNO3. Water treatment sludge maintained its As(III) and Se(IV) adsorption capability at greater than 70?% of that added over eight successive cycles of adsorption/regeneration using 0.5?M NaOH as a regenerating agent. By contrast, for red mud, As(V) adsorption capacity declined very rapidly after three adsorption/desorption cycles and that for Se(IV) it decreased progressively with increasing numbers of cycles. It was concluded that water treatment sludge is a suitable material to develop as a low-cost adsorbent for removal of heavy metal oxyanions from wastewater streams.  相似文献

It has been suggested that surface applications of animal manure can ameliorate both top and subsoil acidity. For that reason, the effects of surface incorporation (0–5 cm) of a high rate of poultry manure to an acid soil on pH and exchangeable and soluble Al in the top‐ and subsoil were investigated in a leaching column study. During the experimental period of 108 d, columns received a total of 875 mm with leaching events occurring after 9, 37, 58, and 86 d. Incorporation of poultry manure into the surface 5 cm resulted in a large rise in pH measured in both 1M KCl and in soil solution. This liming effect was attributed primarily to the substantial CaCO3 content of poultry manure. In the 15–45 cm layer, pHKCl was not significantly different between poultry manure and control treatments but surprisingly, soil‐solution pH was substantially less in the poultry‐manure treatments. Exchangeable Al was significantly less in poultry manure than in control in all soil layers although the effect was most marked in the 0–5 cm layer. However, although concentrations and activities of monomeric Al (Almono), and the proportion of total Al present as Almono, in soil solution were lower under poultry manure than in control in the 0–5 cm layer, the reverse was, in fact, the case in lower soil horizons. This was attributed to a soluble‐salt effect, originating from the large cation content of poultry manure, displacing exchangeable Al3+ and H+ back into soil solution. Indeed, electrical conductivity and concentrations of Ca2+, Mg2+, K+, and Na+ in soil solution were substantially higher in the poultry‐manure than in the control treatments at all soil depths. Poultry‐manure applications also resulted in substantial increases in the concentrations of Ca2+, Mg2+, K+, Na+, Almono, NH , and NO in leachates, particularly at the fourth leaching. It was concluded that although surface application of poultry manure can raise soil pH in the topsoil, increases in soluble‐salt concentrations in soil solution can greatly modify this effect in the subsoil.  相似文献

This research was performed to evaluate the utility of several serum and urine parameters as well as bone ash and plasma parathormone assay to diagnose and monitor diet-related osteopenia in growing pigs. Five diets were tested as follows: calcium-deficient, phosphorus-replete; moderate-deficiency of calcium and phosphorus; marked deficiency of calcium and phosphorus; calcium replete, phosphorus deficient; and vitamin D deficient. Parameters monitored included serum calcium and phosphorus as well as ratios of urine calcium to creatinine, phosphorus to creatinine, calcium to phosphorus, and percent fractional excretions of calcium and phosphorus. Plasma parathormone (PTH) levels were monitored in 2 of 3 experiments. Osteopenic bone differences at necropsy were evaluated by bone density, percent ash, ash per milliliter bone, calcium per milliliter bone, and phosphorus per milliliter bone. Marked change in urine mineral parameters, especially the calcium-to-phosphorus ratio, typically occurred within 1 to 2 days of treatment and preceded significant change in serum mineral or plasma PTH by 2 to 3 weeks. When monitored, plasma PTH levels were elevated following treatment, which confirms the hyperparathyroid state induced by the test diets. Significant differences in bone mineralization between control and treatment diets at necropsy were generally observed. The results of this study indicate that the analysis of urine minerals offers an early, noninvasive technique to investigate diet-associated osteopenic disease in growing pigs, which can be supported further by bone mineral analysis at postmortem using techniques herein described. Several urine mineral reference intervals for application to field investigations are included. Research into application of similar techniques to evaluate calcium and phosphorus homeostasis in pigs of all ages, including gestating and lactating gilts and sows, appears warranted.  相似文献

Disseminated Scedosporium prolificans infection in a 1-year-old female spayed German Shepherd dog is described. Clinical signs were predominantly associated with fungal pyelonephritis and the organism was cultured from the urine. The dog was treated with itraconazole and later, terbinafine was added. Subsequent antifungal susceptibility testing of the isolate showed it to be resistant to all available antifungal drugs. The dog was euthanased because of acute abdominal haemorrhage and associated clinical deterioration. Postmortem examination revealed extensive pyogranulomas containing fungal organisms in the renal parenchyma, myocardium, bone marrow, skeletal muscle, liver, lung, spleen, multiple lymph nodes and pancreas.  相似文献

Female broiler chicks were randomly placed into two groups; one was treated twice daily with TDP-1 (a mycotoxin produced by Fusarium roseum), the other was controls. Chicks were sacrificed after 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, and 14 days of treatment and were evaluated for tibial dyschondroplasia. TDP-1-treated chicks examined after 2, 4, or 6 days of treatment had either no gross lesions (2 days) or mild gross lesions (4 and 6 days); growth plates from these groups did not have ultrastructural changes. TDP-1-treated chicks examined after 8, 10, or 12 days of treatment had moderate to severe gross lesions of tibial dyschondroplasia. These groups also had intracellular lipid accumulation and necrosis of chondrocytes within the retained cartilage. It was concluded that the cellular changes in tibial dyschondroplasia develop only after the cartilage accumulates; the changes are sequelae, possibly due to nutrient depletion from an increased distance between chondrocytes and perforating epiphyseal vessels, their nutrient source.  相似文献

Eleven cases of histologically proven transitional cell carcinoma of the bladder or urethra of the dog were selected for evaluation and characterization of the varied radiographic appearances of the lungs. In the 8 dogs with metastases, those appearances included radiographically normal pulmonary parenchyma, a semidense, diffuse, lacelike haze referred to as interstitial opacity, nodular interstitial opacity, and consolidations. One affected dog had hilar lymphadenopathy. In the 3 dogs without pulmonary metastases, the radiographic appearance was either normal pulmonary parenchyma or increased unstructured interstitial opacity. Of all dogs in the study, 6 had a radiographic appearance of increased unstructured interstitial opacity. Four of those 6 had histologically proven metastases in the peribronchiolar lymphatics or alveolar capillaries. Dyspnea was not identified in any of the affected dogs. The radiographic appearance for 3 of the 8 dogs with pulmonary metastases was misinterpreted as opacity compatible with age. The radiographic appearance for 1 of the 3 dogs without pulmonary metastases was misinterpreted as highly suspect for metastases.  相似文献
