A dead tree of Pinus armandii Franch. var. amamiana (Koidz.) Hatusima (abbreviated to PAAm) was obtained from a natural habitat on Tanega-shima Island and various properties
of its wood were investigated. Grain angle was measured and soft X-ray analysis was undertaken to obtain the density in each
annual ring. Unit shrinkage and dynamic properties were measured by shrinkage, bending, and compression tests. Variations
of wood properties in the radial direction, relationships of wood properties to density, and annual ring width were examined.
Roughly speaking, variations in the radial direction of the grain angle, twist angle by drying, Young’s modulus and strength
in static bending, absorbed energy in impact bending, compressive Young’s modulus, compressive strength, and compressive proportional
limit corresponded to the variation of annual ring width. As a result, it was determined that if PAAm is afforested artificially
for the purposes of lumber production and conservation, the annual rings of logs should not be too widely spaced. Wood properties
of PAAm were similar to those of Japanese black pine (Pinus thunbergii Parl.), which is another representative pine on Tanegashima Island.

We investigated the effect of exposure to low salinity water on plasma ion regulation and survival rates in artificially wounded devil stinger Inimicus japonicus. All fishes survived in 33% seawater (SW), while survival rate in 100% SW was 5.1% at 24 h. In 100% SW, plasma Na+, K+, Mg2+, and Ca2+ concentrations significantly increased to 238?±?49.9, 9.6?±?2.4, 15.1?±?3.5 and 5.0?±?0.7 mmol/l at 6 h, respectively; the gill Na+/K+–ATPase (NKA) activity was almost stable, although only one fish survived to 24 h. In 33% SW, plasma Na+ and K+ concentrations remained at the same level, and plasma Mg2+ and Ca2+ concentrations gradually increased to 16.2?±?0.7 and 4.5?±?0.2 mmol/l until 24 h, respectively. The NKA activity significantly increased to 5.1?±?1.1 µmol ADP/mg protein per h at 6 h. A positive correlation was observed between the wound surface area against body weight and the plasma ion concentrations, although no difference was observed in the restoration rate of the wounded area between 100 and 33% SW. These results indicate that exposure of wounded fish to low salinity water improves survivability by favoring plasma ion regulation without influencing the restoration rate. 相似文献

The objectives of this study were to establish the method of evaluating wood mechanical properties by acoustic nondestructive
testing at standing trees and at logs of a Chinese fir (Cunninghamia lanceolata (Lamb.) Hook.) plantation, and to compare three acoustic nondestructive methods for evaluating the static bending modulus
of elasticity (MOE), modulus of rupture (MOR), and compressive strength parallel-to-grain (σc) of plantation wood as well. Fifteen Chinese fir plantation trees at 36 years of age were selected. Each tree was cut into
four logs, for which three values of dynamic modulus of elasticity, i.e., E
sw, of the north and south face based on stress waves to assume the measuring state of the standing tree, E
fr, longitudinal vibration, and E
us, ultrasonic wave, were measured in the green condition. After log measurements, small specimens were cut and air-dried to
12% moisture content (MC). Static bending tests were then performed to determine the bending MOE and MOR, and compressive
tests parallel-to-grain were made to determine σc. The bending MOE of small clear specimens was about 7.1% and 15.4% less than E
sw and E
us, respectively, and 11.3% greater than E
fr. The differences between the bending MOE and dynamic MOE of logs as determined by the three acoustic methods were statistically
significant (P < 0.001). Good correlation (R = 0.77, 0.57, and 0.45) between E

us and static MOE, respectively, were obtained (P < 0.001). It can be concluded that longitudinal vibration may be the most precise and reliable technique to evaluate the

Recent studies have shown that dietary phospholipids, especially phosphatidylcholine and phosphatidylserine, have various beneficial biological effects. However, there are not enough data concerning the physiological function of dietary phosphatidylinositol (PI). The metabolic syndrome, a cluster of metabolic abnormalities such as dyslipidemia, diabetes mellitus, and hypertension, is a widespread and increasingly prevalent disease in industrialized countries. Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is often associated with features of the metabolic syndrome. NAFLD describes the spectrum of liver damage ranging from hepatic steatosis to steatohepatitis, liver fibrosis, and cirrhosis, and it is emerging as the most common liver disease worldwide. The present study examined whether dietary PI protects Zucker ( fa/ fa) rats from the metabolic syndrome. For 4 weeks, rats were fed semisynthetic diets containing either 7% soybean oil or 5% soybean oil plus 2% PI. Dietary PI markedly prevented the development of hepatomegaly and hepatic steatosis and lowered hepatic injury markers in serum. Additionally, hyperinsulinemia was relieved by the feeding of dietary PI in Zucker rats. These effects were attributable to an increase in serum adiponectin, enhancement of fatty acid beta-oxidation, and suppression of mRNA expression of inflammatory genes in the liver. This is the first report that dietary PI increases serum adiponectin level and prevents the development of NAFLD in a rat model of the metabolic syndrome. 相似文献

In the middle of the 1990s, Pacific saury fishery vessels began to install “size separators” to selectively land large-size
class fish with a higher price. Contrary to expectations, this resulted in removal of the separators in 2006 because fishers
believed the separators had contributed to price collapses in the 2000s. The intent of this paper is to investigate the effects
of separators on both the fishery economy and stock of Pacific saury by simulating population and economic models under a
single framework. For this purpose, we developed (1) an age-structured population dynamics model with stochasticity, and (2)
an economic model spanning both price and inventory dynamics with stochasticity, in which each set of model parameters were
estimated on the basis of time series data. In a 10-year simulation, the harvest quota was set constant from 20,000 to 400,000 t
at intervals of 20,000 t, and the effects of separators were incorporated by controlling the catchability of 0-year-old fish.
We found that separators increase the expected yield and reduce the deficit risk for harvests of 140,000 t and smaller. However,

This study investigated consumer behavior towards meat across Asia and Pacific-Rim countries. Mail surveys were undertaken in 1994 and 1995. Data was obtained from 6197 households in Japan, the USA (mainland and Japanese–Americans in Hawaii), Australia, Thailand, Korea, Taiwan and China. The data were mainly analyzed using cluster analysis to determine the distance between each country and to classify countries into groups. Japanese respondents purchased beef more frequently than respondents from other countries. The average amount purchased on each occasion was far more for Australian respondents than for respondents from other countries, while Japanese purchased far less. Respondents in Japan, Korea, China and Australia thought beef was the most expensive meat, whereas lamb was thought to be the most expensive in the remaining countries. Chinese respondents indicated the highest consciousness of price indexes. The level of uneasiness about eating meat indicated by Asian respondents was relatively strong compared with respondents in Hawaii, the USA and Australia. Average ratings (semantic differential scale) on plans for future meat consumption were higher for beef than for other meats in Korea and China, whereas chicken was rated higher in the other countries. From the dendrogram, surveyed countries were classified into three groups: Japan, Taiwan and Korea; Thailand and China; and the USA, Japanese–Americans and Australia. Anemia is a major secondary symptom in chronic renal disorder (CRD), but the precise cause of insufficient production of erythropoietin (EPO) remains unclear owing to the controversial localization of EPO-producing cells in the kidneys. The ICR-derived glomerulonephritis (ICGN) mouse, a new hereditary nephrotic mouse, is an appropriate model of anemia associated with CRD. By using an amplified in situ hybridization technique, we detected and counted the renal EPO-producing cells under both normoxic and hypoxic conditions. The expression levels of renal EPO mRNA were quantified and oxygen gradients were also assessed immunohistochemically. Amplified in situ hybridization clarified that EPO-producing cells were peritubular interstitial cells in the middle region of renal cortex in both ICR and ICGN mice. Hypoxia (7% O2) induced low oxygen tension in proximal tubular epithelial cells of renal cortex, and increased the expression of EPO mRNA and the number of EPO-producing cells in both ICR and ICGN mice. However, hypoxia did not increase the serum EPO levels in ICGN mice. The ICGN mouse is a good model for anemia associated with CRD, and the suppression of EPO protein production in the renal EPO-producing cells is considered to be a potential cause of anemia associated with CRD. 相似文献
