Soil aquifer treatment (SAT) is a cost-effective natural wastewater treatment and reuse technology. It is an environmentally friendly technology that does not require chemical usage and is applicable to both developing and developed countries. However, the presence of organic matter, nutrients, and pathogens poses a major health threat to the population exposed to partially treated wastewater or reclaimed water through SAT. Laboratory-based soil column and batch experiments simulating SAT were conducted to examine the influence of temperature variation and oxidation?Creduction (redox) conditions on removal of bulk organic matter, nutrients, and indicator microorganisms using primary effluent. While an average dissolved organic carbon (DOC) removal of 17.7?% was achieved in soil columns at 5?°C, removal at higher temperatures increased by 10?% increments with increase in temperature by 5?°C over the range of 15 to 25?°C. Furthermore, soil column and batch experiments conducted under different redox conditions revealed higher DOC removal in aerobic (oxic) experiments compared to anoxic experiments. Aerobic soil columns exhibited DOC removal 15?% higher than that achieved in the anoxic columns, while aerobic batch showed DOC removal 7.8?% higher than the corresponding anoxic batch experiments. Ammonium-nitrogen removal greater than 99?% was observed at 20 and 25?°C, while 89.7?% was removed at 15?°C, but the removal substantially decreased to 8.8?% at 5?°C. While ammonium-nitrogen was attenuated by 99.9?% in aerobic batch reactors carried out at room temperature, anoxic experiments under similar conditions revealed 12.1?% ammonium-nitrogen reduction, corresponding to increase in nitrate-nitrogen and decrease in sulfate concentration. 相似文献

The tobacco caterpillar, Spodoptera litura (Fabricius) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), is a polyphagous pest defoliating sweet potato, Ipomoea batata (Lam) (Convolvulaceae), throughout Asia. The study of morphometric parameters of S. litura as a result of feeding on three varieties (RNSP1, KIRAN and RNSP3) of host plant revealed that a greater number of egg masses were laid on the KIRAN variety than on the others. I. batata varieties showed statistically significant effects on length, breadth and weight of different larval instars. KIRAN-fed larvae molted to bigger-sized pupae. S. litura larvae reared on KIRAN variety had the highest feeding index as well as growth index. The low concentrations of phenols and carbohydrates coupled with elevated levels of proteins and amino acids were found in KIRAN as compared with RNSP1 and RNSP3. Collectively, the results of this study revealed that KIRAN cultivar was the most suitable food plant for the development of S. litura. Concurrently, it is suggested that this cultivar is therefore least suitable for sweet potato cultivation. 相似文献

The study estimated the efficiency of Avocado seed carbon (ASC) for chemical oxygen demand (COD) and biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) reduction from coffee processing wastewater. It was performed under batch mode conditions to investigate the optimum operating conditions and efficiency for COD and BOD reduction with ASC compared with commercial activated carbon (CAC). Adsorption isotherm study was also performed and it was found that the values of regression coefficient (r 2), adsorption capacity (k), and adsorption intensity (1/n) for COD and BOD reduction with ASC were comparable to those of CAC. Under optimum operating conditions, the maximum percentage reduction of COD and BOD concentration using ASC was 98.28% and 99.19%, respectively and with CAC was 99.12% and 99.45%, respectively and hence adsorption capacity of ASC is comparable with that of CAC. Drip irrigation is becoming popular in India although the decision to shift to drip irrigation from surface irrigation is not backed up by solid economic factors. It is not that the factors do not justify the shift, but that insufficient study has been done to document the conditions under which a change is justified. The investment decision for shifting to drip irrigation will depend upon many factors; including cost of cultivation, productivity, yield gain factor, cost of produce, electricity charges, depth of groundwater and irrigation requirement. These parameters vary from crop to crop, place to place, size of plot, and farmer to farmer. Therefore a sweeping recommendation suitable for all conditions cannot be made. In view of this, a software program has been developed for estimating the threshold economic value of the investment cost of drip irrigation. In addition to the threshold value of investment cost, the software provides information on energy consumption and net return. The software can be used both for annual crops such as sugarcane or seasonal crops such as vegetable rotations (winter–summer). To demonstrate the interdependence of various input parameters, an analysis has been made using local data in this software. The analysis has provided the relationship between the investment cost and the yield gain factor, the returns from the crop, as well as the savings in energy and the size of the prime mover with regard to the size of the farm. 相似文献

The potential of fly ash, brick kiln ash and commercial activated carbon is determined for the reduction of chemical oxygen demand (COD) from domestic wastewater. Laboratory experiments are conducted for investigating the effect of treatment time, adsorbent dose, pH of the media, initial COD concentration, agitation speed and particle size of adsorbents on the COD reduction from the domestic wastewater. Starting with an initial COD concentration of 1080 mg/l the maximum COD reduction achieved for fly ash was 87.84%, brick kiln ash was 83.22% and commercial activated carbon was 99.35 %. These values were achieved when the wastewater was treated with activated carbon for 180 min, fly ash 250 min and brick kiln ash 300 min and the adsorbent dose was kept respectively at 40 g/l, 60 g/l and 45 g/l for activated carbon, fly ash and brick kiln ash. Agitation speed was kept constant at 600 rpm and the pH was maintained at 2 for activated carbon and fly ash and 5 for brick kiln ash. The maximum percent reduction is for 0.053 mm or smaller size of the particles. Though the adsorption capacity of the ash for reducing the COD is lower than that of the commercial activated carbon, the low material cost can make it an attractive option for the treatment of domestic wastewater. 相似文献

Acute toxicity bioassays were conducted to evaluate the comparative toxicity of phenol (an aromatic hydrocarbon) pentachlorophenol (chloro-derivative of phenol) and dinitrophenol (nitro-derivative of phenol) for determining the LC50 and acute toxicity range for 24, 48, 72 and 96h, against the test fishes Notopterus notopterus, Colisa fasciatus and Saccobranchus fossilis. Relative susceptibility of fish, safe concentrations, heterogeneity factors and fiducial limits (95 %) were calculated using 96 h LC50 values. Regression equations and slope functions (s) were calculated for each time interval. On the basis of relative susceptibility for phenol, Notopterus notopterus was found to be more susceptible as compared to Saccobranchus fossilis and the susceptibility of Colisa fasciatus lies in between the two. In case of pentachlorophenol and dinitrophenol, susceptibility lies in the increasing order from Colisa fasciatus, Saccobranchus fossilis to Notopterus notopterus. 相似文献

Fish samples collected near the caustic soda factory of TACSCO in Thailand during November and December 1978 were found to contain 0.10 to 1.38 ppm Hg in flesh (on wet weight basis), whereas those of the control areas contained 0.01 to 0.30 ppm. The Hg content of the fish in the TACSCO area had decreased by more than half from the first investigation which took place during 1975–76. This decrease is obviously a result of the functioning of the waste-water-treatment system built by the factory in 1974. The bottom mud collected near the factory in 1978 contained 8.39 to 57.95 ppm Hg (on dry weight basis) as compared with the mean of 0.03 ppm in samples taken from the control area. The Hg content in fish-eating birds were low, 0.04 to 0.44 ppm in the muscles and 0.05 to 1.32 ppm in the livers (on wet weight basis). 相似文献

Drip irrigation is widely recognized as potentially one of the most efficient irrigation methods. However, this efficiency is often not achieved because systems are not always well designed or maintained and many farmers lack the tools to assess the crop water requirements and to monitor the soil moisture conditions in the field. There is a vast amount of literature on irrigation scheduling but little literature takes scientific information the next step by preparing practical guidelines for smallholder farmers. There is a large and widening gap between the state of the art irrigation scheduling tools and current on-farm irrigation practices. Most farmers find current irrigation scheduling tools overwhelming and lack the means and skills to install and operate them. It is suggested that farmers need simple, cheap and more comprehensive support tools to achieve improved irrigation management at the farm level. Wageningen University and Research Centre (WUR) developed the Drip Planner Chart (DPC) to provide smallholder farmers with a simple tool to schedule drip irrigation to the crops?? needs. DPC is a manual disk calculator to calculate daily irrigation requirement. Farmers?? feedback was the basis for developing the DPC. Using DPC over a three-year period in Spain resulted in a 14 % water saving and improved irrigation timing. Trials at smallholder farmer fields in Nepal and Zambia showed DPC advice is more adapted to the changing demands of the crop over the different growth stages and responds to the farmer??s quest for practical drip scheduling advice. This paper presents the Drip Planner Chart and the scientific validation of the accuracy of the DPC. Experiments on farmers?? fields show water saving in Nepal and improved yield in Zambia. In both countries an improved scheduling over the growing seasons was found using DPC. 相似文献
