Fumonisins: probable role as effectors in the complex interaction of susceptible and resistant maize hybrids and Fusarium verticillioides

Fusarium verticillioides is best known for its worldwide occurrence on maize resulting in highly variable disease symptoms, ranging from asymptomatic to severe rotting and wilting and fumonisin production. The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of hybrid genotypes in the early stages of F. verticillioides infection, and the role of fumonisins as effectors in the outcome of this complex interaction. Disease symptoms, growth parameters, root morphology, and fungal colonization were evaluated at 7, 14, and 21 days after planting in seedlings from maize seeds of resistant (RH) and susceptible (SH) hybrids inoculated with F. verticillioides or watered with solutions of fumonisins. F. verticillioides induced growth enhancement or retardation depending on the plant genetic background and the fungal colonization rate, while fumonisins caused severe reduction in biomass and fitness. Seedlings watered with high fumonisin concentrations displayed lesions similar to those seen in F. verticillioides maize seedling disease, and also elicited inhibitory effects on root growth and morphology and on functional properties. In summary, these data strongly suggest a dual role for fumonisins in the F. verticillioides-maize interaction, acting as pathogenic factors at high concentrations, or triggering the plant detoxification mechanisms at low levels.

Fluorescence and Absorption Changes in Chlorella Exposed to Strong Light: The Red Band

The reversible decrease in the apparent intensity of the main red absorption band of chlorophyll a at 680 mnu upon strong illumination of Chlorella cells, described by Coleman and Rabinowitch in 1957, is shown, by a polarization method, to be due to an increase in the fluorescence yield. True absorption changes are observed at 657 mnu (positive) and 648 mnu (negative).     

Stratospheric Mean Ages and Transport Rates from Observations of Carbon Dioxide and Nitrous Oxide

Measurements of stratospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) and nitrous oxide (N2O) concentrations were analyzed to investigate stratospheric transport rates. Temporal variations in tropospheric CO2 were observed to propagate into the stratosphere, showing that tropospheric air enters the lower tropical stratosphere continuously, ascends, and is transported rapidly (in less than 1 month) to both hemispheres. The mean age A of stratospheric air determined from CO2 data is approximately 5 years in the mid-stratosphere. The mean age is mathematically equivalent to a conserved tracer analogous to exhaust from stratospheric aircraft. Comparison of values for A from models and observations indicates that current model simulations likely underestimate pollutant concentrations from proposed stratospheric aircraft by 25 to 100 percent.

Northridge earthquake damage caused by geologic focusing of seismic waves

Despite being located 21 kilometers from the epicenter of the 1994 Northridge earthquake (magnitude 6.7), the city of Santa Monica experienced anomalously concentrated damage with Mercalli intensity IX, an intensity as large as that experienced in the vicinity of the epicenter. Seismic records from aftershocks suggest that the damage resulted from the focusing of seismic waves by several underground acoustic lenses at depths of about 3 kilometers, formed by the faults that bound the northwestern edge of the Los Angeles basin. The amplification was greatest for high-frequency waves and was less powerful at lower frequencies, which is consistent with focusing theory and finite-difference simulations.     

Mutations in SDHD, a mitochondrial complex II gene, in hereditary paraganglioma

Hereditary paraganglioma (PGL) is characterized by the development of benign, vascularized tumors in the head and neck. The most common tumor site is the carotid body (CB), a chemoreceptive organ that senses oxygen levels in the blood. Analysis of families carrying the PGL1 gene, described here, revealed germ line mutations in the SDHD gene on chromosome 11q23. SDHD encodes a mitochondrial respiratory chain protein-the small subunit of cytochrome b in succinate-ubiquinone oxidoreductase (cybS). In contrast to expectations based on the inheritance pattern of PGL, the SDHD gene showed no evidence of imprinting. These findings indicate that mitochondria play an important role in the pathogenesis of certain tumors and that cybS plays a role in normal CB physiology.
