EPO is a hematopoietic growth factor produced in the kidney that stimulates erythropoiesis. It effectively treats hypoproliferative anemia associated with CRF, improving quality of life in these patients. Other uses that are poorly characterized in veterinary medicine include treatment of cancer patients on chemotherapy, hematologic disorders, and anemic FeLV-infected cats as well as preoperative conditioning for elective surgeries that may involve significant blood loss. Careful monitoring of therapy is necessary for optimal results. Several complications are associated with rHuEPO therapy. The production of anti-rHuEPO antibodies is the most significant and can be a life-threatening event. Alternatives to human EPO are being sought to provide beneficial effects while avoiding antibody formation. 相似文献

A collection of 101 isolates of Phytophthora infestans, obtained from seven sampling sites representing central, east and south-east Estonia during 2002 and 2003 were assessed
for several phenotypic and genotypic markers. All 101 isolates were assessed for virulence and resistance to metalaxyl. Virulence
to each of the 11 classic resistance genes was found among the tested isolates. The mean number of virulences per isolate
was 6.3, with a very low frequency of virulence against resistance genes R5 (5%) and R9 (14%). The most common pathotypes
were 1.3.4.7.8.10.11 and 1.3.4.7.10.11, representing altogether 12% of the studied strains. In terms of metalaxyl resistance,
30 resistant, 52 intermediate and 19 sensitive isolates were found. A subgroup of 50 isolates was assessed for mating type,
allozymes [glucose-6-phosphate isomerase (Gpi) and peptidase (Pep)], DNA fingerprints with probe RG57 and mtDNA haplotype.
Of this subset, 30 were A1 and 20 were A2. Collections from three of the seven fields contained both mating types. Allozyme
analysis did not reveal any polymorphism. However, 19 diverse RG57 fingerprints were detected, and two mitochondrial DNA haplotypes,
Ia and IIa, were detected. By combining the mating type, mtDNA haplotype and RG57 fingerprint data, 26 multilocus genotypes
were identified, of which 18 were detected only once. Genotypic diversity measured by the normalised Shannon diversity index
was high (0.76). The large number of multilocus genotypes and the presence of both mating types in some fields indicate that
sexual reproduction may take place in Estonian populations of P. infestans. 相似文献

Currently, European farmers do not have access to sufficient numbers and diversity of crop species/varieties. This prevents them from designing cropping systems more resilient to abiotic and biotic stresses. Crop diversification is a key lever to reduce pest (pathogens, animal pests and weeds) pressures at all spatial levels from fields to landscapes. In this context, plant breeding should consist of: (1) increased efforts in the development of new or minor crop varieties to foster diversity in cropping systems, and (2) focus on more resilient varieties showing local adaptation. This new breeding paradigm, called here ‘breeding for integrated pest management (IPM)’, may boost IPM through the development of cultivars with tolerance or resistance to key pests, with the goal of reducing reliance on conventional pesticides. At the same time, this paradigm has legal and practical implications for future breeding programs, including those targeting sustainable agricultural systems. Thousands of blood transfusions are performed each year on dogs and cats, and the demand for blood products continues to grow. Risks associated with transfusions include the risk of disease transmission. Appropriate screening of blood donors for bloodborne infectious disease agents should be performed to lessen this risk. Geographic restrictions of disease, breed predilection, and documentation of actual disease transmission by transfusion all are factors that might need to be considered when making a decision on what screening program to use. In addition, factors involving general health care and management of blood donors should be employed to further ensure blood safety. 相似文献

Developmental dynamics was investigated in the activity of glutamate dehydrogenase (GDH, E.C. 1.4.1.2.-4) and glutamine synthetase (GS, E.C. 6.3.1.2) in different parts of the digestive tract of lambs, in dependence on the age from 10 to 90 days; the goal of these investigations was to elucidate in greater detail the role of the above enzymes in nitrogen metabolism. The activity of GDH, and of the coenzymes NADH and NADPH, was followed in the digesta because simple organisms (bacteria, fungi, plants) have two glutamate dehydrogenases: they differ from each other by coenzyme specificity, unlike GDH from animal sources which can utilize both NADH coenzyme and NADPH coenzyme (Fahien et al., 1965; Frieden, 1964). The following activities of GDH and GS were found out in trials with lambs at the age of 10, 20, 30, 40 and 90 days, as to the different parts of digestive tract: in the tissues of rumen, omasum, reticulum, spleen, duodenum, jejunum, ileum, int. caecum and colon the activity of GDH (NADH) varied from 0.031 to 0.305 nkat/mg dry matter, in the digesta from 0 to 2.92 nkat/mg dry matter. An investigation of GDH (NADH, NADPH) dynamics in the digesta of lambs showed the relatively high activity of GDH (NADH) in the digesta of colon at the age of 10 days and that of GDH (NADPH) in the digesta of int. caecum. The activity of GDH (NADH) was also found to be high in the digesta of int. caecum at the age of 20 days. Pituitary-dependent hyperadrenocorticism is a common endocrine disorder in dogs in the United States. Once a diagnosis is established, a decision must be made whether or not to pursue treatment, and if so, which medication to use. Historically, mitotane (Lysodren, o,p'-DDD, Bristol-Myers Squibb, New York) has been the most commonly used treatment for medical management. Its use is complicated and comes with many potential side effects, making many practitioners wary of its use. Recently, trilostane has been proven to be an effective treatment of pituitary-dependent hyperadrenocorticism and is approved for use in other countries. Treatment with trilostane is somewhat simpler and the incidence of side effects seems to be less when compared with mitotane therapy. Either treatment can be a safe and effective method of treatment for pituitary-dependent hyperadrenocorticism when the practitioner and client are well educated regarding their use and an appropriate monitoring protocol is used. 相似文献

Ecological theory predicts that animal movement is shaped by its efficiency of resource acquisition. Focusing solely on efficiency, however, ignores the fact that animal activity can affect resource availability and distribution. Here, we show that feedback between individual behavior and environmental complexity can explain movement strategies in mussels. Specifically, experiments show that mussels use a Lévy walk during the formation of spatially patterned beds, and models reveal that this Lévy movement accelerates pattern formation. The emergent patterning in mussel beds, in turn, improves individual fitness. These results suggest that Lévy walks evolved as a result of the selective advantage conferred by autonomously generated, emergent spatial patterns in mussel beds. Our results emphasize that an interaction between individual selection and habitat complexity shapes animal movement in natural systems. 相似文献

Unexpected sudden catastrophic shifts may occur in ecosystems, with concomitant losses or gains of ecological and economic resources. Such shifts have been theoretically attributed to positive feedback and bistability of ecosystem states. However, verifications and predictive power with respect to catastrophic responses to a changing environment are lacking for spatially extensive ecosystems. This situation impedes management and recovery strategies for such ecosystems. Here, we review recent studies on various ecosystems that link self-organized patchiness to catastrophic shifts between ecosystem states. 相似文献
