We investigated the effects of an ambient dose of ultraviolet-B (UV-B) radiation on chamber-grown Pseudotsuga menziesii var. glauca (Beissn.) Franco (Douglas-fir) seedlings, to determine if the presence of UV-B radiation in the growth light regime induces tolerance to environmental stresses such as high light and drought. Douglas-fir seedlings were grown without UV-B radiation or with 6 kJ m-2 day-1 of biologically effective UV-B, which is ambient for the intermountain regions of Idaho. Non-stressed seedlings grown with UV-B radiation had 35% lower seedling dry mass, 36% higher concentrations of UV-B absorbing compounds per unit leaf area, 30% lower stomatal frequencies, 25% lower light-saturated photochemical efficiencies of Photosystem II and 45% lower light-saturated stomatal conductance than non-stressed seedlings grown without UV-B radiation. After 4 days of high-light stress, seedlings grown with UV-B radiation had 32% higher light-saturated carbon assimilation rates (A(CO2)) than seedlings grown without UV-B radiation. After water was withheld from the seedlings for up to 15 days, seedlings grown with UV-B radiation had 50% higher A(CO2) and 40% higher seedling water potentials than seedlings grown without UV-B radiation. The results support the hypothesis that UV-B radiation can act as an environmental signal to induce tolerance to high-light and drought stress in Douglas-fir seedlings. Possible mechanisms for the enhanced stress tolerance are discussed.  相似文献

Zusammenfassung Im Winter 1981/82 wurden in der Umgebung Osnabrücks (Niedersachsen) 43 Vogelnester von 4 unterschiedlichen Standorten im Labor auf ihren Insekten- und Spinnenbestand analysiert. Das aktive Aufsuchen von Vogelnestern als kleinklimatisch günstige Überwinterungsorte war bei vielen Arten mit einem Straten- und Biotopwechsel verbunden. Bei folgenden Spinnenarten konnten erstmals winterreife Imagines nachgewiesen werden:Lathys humilis (Blackwall),Theridion tinctum (Walckenaer),Poeciloneta globosa (Wider) unPityohyphantes phrygianus (Koch). Die Naturschutz-Bedeutung verlassener Vogelnester als attraktive Refugien überwinternder Arthropoden wird diskutiert.
Bird's nests as winterhabitats for insects and spiders
During the winter of 1981/82 159 insects and 263 spiders in 43 nests were collected in surroundings of Osnabrück, Lower Saxony, GFR. With the choice of bird's nests as suitable micro-climatic hibernation-quarters many species combined a change of strata and biotop. Among the spiders four species with hibernating adults were found for the first time:Lathys humilis (Blackwall),Theridon tinctum (Walckenaer),Poeciloneta globosa (Wider), andPityohyphantes phrygianus (Koch). The importance of bird's nests as attractive places for hibernating arthropods is discussed from the view of nature conservation.

In the pig, temporospatially regulated proliferation of uterine luminal (LE) and glandular (GE) epithelium between birth (postnatal day=PND 0) and PND 15 is essential for success of endometrial development. Exposure of gilts to estrogen (E) or relaxin (RLX) during this period disrupts uterine development, and neonatal E exposure can compromise adult uterine function. Neonatal uterotrophic effects of E and RLX, administered for 2 days beginning on PND 12, can be inhibited with the antiestrogen ICI 182,780 (ICI) indicating crosstalk between RLX and E signaling systems. Here, objectives were to determine effects of: (study 1) neonatal age and (study 2) exposure to E, RLX, and ICI on porcine neonatal uterine histoarchitecture and patterns of epithelial cell proliferation as reflected by proliferating cell nuclear antigen labeling index. In study 1, uteri were obtained on PND 0, 3, 6, 9, 12 and 15. Glandular epithelium, absent at birth, was observed by PND 3. Overall, epithelial labeling index increased from birth to PND 3, declined from PND 6-9 in LE and GE, and increased to PND 15 in GE. In study 2, uteri were collected on PND 14 after administration of vehicle, E, or RLX for 2 days, or following pretreatment with ICI. Alone, E was uterotrophic and adenogenic and increased labeling index in both LE and GE. Both RLX and ICI increased proliferation in GE. Effects of E and RLX were attenuated by ICI, providing further support for crosstalk between these signaling systems in the developing neonatal porcine endometrium.  相似文献

We investigated the production of interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) during canine visceral leishmaniasis (VL) to gain a better understanding of the role of such multi-functional cytokines in parasite resistance. IL-6 and TNF-α levels were measured by capture ELISA in sera from 8 healthy dogs from a non-endemic area (control group) and in sera from 16 dogs from Araçatuba, SP, Brazil, an area endemic for leishmaniosis. The dogs from the endemic area were selected by positive ELISA serology against total Leishmania chagasi antigen, positive spleen imprints for Leishmania, and the presence of at least three clinical signs associated with active visceral leishmaniasis (fever, dermatitis, lymphoadenopathy, onychogryphosis, weight loss, cachexia, locomotory difficulty, conjunctivitis, epistaxis, hepatosplenomegaly, edema, and apathy).Enhanced systemic IL-6 production was found in sera from dogs with the active disease compared to healthy dogs (t-test, P < 0.05). In contrast, TNF-α did not differ between the two groups studied. There was no correlation between IL-6 production and anti-leishmanial antibody titers in the sera. Our findings suggest that IL-6 is a good marker of active disease during leishmaniasis, and that other cytokines may be involved in the hypergammaglobulinemia characteristic of canine visceral leishmaniasis.  相似文献

Crop rotation adoption in no‐tillage systems (NTS) has been recommended to increase the biological activity and soil aggregation, suppress soil and plant pathogens, and increase the productivity aiming at the sustainability of agricultural areas. In this context, this study aimed to assess the effect of crop rotation on the arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) community and soil aggregation in a soil cultivated for nine years under NTS. Treatments consisted of combinations of three summer crop sequences and seven winter crops. Summer crop sequences consisted of corn (Zea mays L.) monoculture, soybean (Glycine max L. Merrill) monoculture, and soybean–corn rotation. Winter crops consisted of corn, sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench), sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.), sunn hemp (Crotalaria juncea L.), pigeon pea (Cajanus cajan (L.) Millsp.), oilseed radish (Raphanus sativus L.), and millet (Pennisetum americanum (L.) Leeke). Soil samples were collected at a depth of 0–0.10 m for analyses of soil chemical, physical, and biological attributes. Spore abundance, total glomalin, and soil aggregate stability index were higher in the soil under corn monoculture. The highest values of aggregate mean weight diameter were observed in the soybean–corn rotation (3.78 mm) and corn monoculture (3.70 mm), both differing from soybean monoculture (3.15 mm), while winter crops showed significant differences only between sorghum (3.96 mm) and pigeon pea (3.25 mm). Two processes were identified in the soil under summer crop sequences. The first process was observed in PC1 (spore abundance, total glomalin, easily extractable glomalin, pH, P, and Mg2+) and was related to AMF; the second process occurred in PC2 (aggregate mean weight diameter, soil aggregate stability index, K+, and organic matter) and was related to soil aggregation. The nine‐year no‐tillage system under the same crop rotation adoption influenced AMF abundance in the soil, especially with corn cultivation in the summer crop sequence, which promoted an increased total external mycelium length and number of spores of AMF. In addition, it favored an increased soil organic matter content, which is directly related to the formation and stability of soil aggregates in these managements.  相似文献

Tomato is affected by a large number of arthropod pests, among which the whitefly (Bemisia tabaci) is considered to be one of the most destructive. Several accessions of the wild species of Solanum galapagense, including accession LA1401, are considered resistant to whitefly (B. tabaci). This resistance has been associated with the presence of type IV glandular trichomes on the leaf surface. Our research aimed to study the inheritance of type IV glandular trichome density and its association with resistance to whitefly (B. tabaci biotype B) in populations derived from the interspecific cross Solanum lycopersicum × S. galapagense ‘LA1401.’ High estimates for both broad-sense and narrow-sense heritabilities of type IV glandular trichome densities suggest that inheritance of this trait is not complex. Whitefly resistance was associated with high density of type IV glandular trichomes. F2 (S. galapagense × S. lycopersicum) population plants selected for the highest densities of type IV glandular trichomes showed similar levels of resistance to those found in the donor of resistance LA1401.  相似文献
