The relative importance of the components of tuber yield in selection in early generations of a potato-breeding programme was studied. In seedling generation the number of tubers were more important than average tuber weight, whereas in clonal generations the average tuber weight was more important. Correlation coefficients between number of tubers and tuber yield varied from generation to generation whereas those of average tuber weight and tuber yield were more or less constant. Unlike the number of tubers, the average tuber weight of a genotype in a generation influenced its tuber yield in subsequent generations. Egg quality, those characteristics of the egg that determine its capacity to survive, is a significant problem for many species of fish currently being farmed. Little is known about the determinants of egg quality and there is little agreement regarding reliable methods for its assessment. To be of practical benefit, assessments should be simple to perform and should be carried out as early in development as is possible. Fertilization rates are often used as measures of quality. For the Atlantic halibut Hippoglossus hippoglossus, fertilization rate and assessments of cell symmetry at early cleavage stages provide reasonable indicators of quality. Regardless of assessment method, it is strongly recommended that performance data from all batches of each broodfish be examined when surveying the overall quality of a stock. The misleading effects of pooling such information are demonstrated for a rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss broodstock. Although a large number of factors have been implicated as possible determinants of egg quality, only 1) bacterial colonization of the eggs, 2) nutritional status of the broodfish and, 3) overripening, the process of aging that occurs when eggs are retained within the broodfish after ovulation, have been clearly shown to affect egg quality. The effect of overripening on fish egg quality is discussed in detail. Species-specific differences in the time scale of overripening are pointed out and related to spawning strategy and water temperature. Rainbow trout eggs and those of other salmonids should be fertilized within approximately one week of ovulation. Overripening proceeds much more rapidly in warm water species, e.g., tilapia eggs must be fertilized within an hour or so of ovulation. Egg viability also decreases rapidly for batch spawning species. Fertilization data are presented for Atlantic halibut demonstrating that egg quality decreases 4–6 h after ovulation. The rate of overripening was comparable for eggs held in vitro in ovarian fluid to those retained within the ovarian lumen. These halibut data, combined with information from other marine and freshwater fish, indicate that overripening is a significant determinant of egg quality for many if not all fish. 相似文献

The variation in egg size within and between egg clutches of O. mossambicus, and the subsequent influence of mean egg size on growth, feeding incidence and survival of unfed fry were investigated.The individual egg sizes within 90% of the egg clutches examined were normally distributed and the coefficient of variation of egg size within clutches ranged from 7.4% to 15.4%. Fry emerging from the small, medium and large egg size groups reached their maximum length and weight at 9, 9 and 12 days after hatching, respectively. Maximum attainable fry length and weight were significantly correlated with egg size (r = 0.885 and 0.947, respectively, with P < 0.01).Egg size had little influence on the onset of feeding. Fry were capable of exogenous feeding within 6 to 7 days of hatching. Fry originating from small and medium egg size classes reached the point-of-no-return at 15–16 days after hatching compared to 21 days for fry from the large egg size class. The mean survival time (ST50) of fry on their yolk reserves was significantly correlated (r = 0.923; P < 0.01) with their original mean egg weight and ranged from 9.5 days for fry hatching from 0.91-mg eggs to 21 days for fry from 1.93-mg eggs. 相似文献

Aeromonas salmonicida, a fish pathogen, is the causative agent of furunculosis. It was already shown that growing this bacterium in stressful conditions such as temperature above 22°C might lead to virulence attenuation. Unfortunately, many veterinary microbiology services and reference centers still routinely cultivate A. salmonicida at 25°C. Here we tested the presence of virulence factors by growth on specific medium as well as the integrity of the pAsa5 plasmid, which bears an important virulence factor, the type III secretion system (TTSS), by PCR analysis in twenty strains, most of which were grown at 25°C in their laboratory of origin. The analysis revealed that strains, which encountered the more stressful growth conditions displayed the most frequent absence of A-layer protein and secreted proteolytic activity. Moreover, many strains had lost parts of the pAsa5 plasmid in which the TTSS region was almost always affected. To confirm the effect of stressful growth conditions on the plasmid, three strains with an intact pAsa5 were cultured at 25°C for two weeks. A low but significant fraction of the tested colonies displayed pAsa5 rearrangements. The rearrangement always affected the TTSS region and led to a loss of virulence in the Dictyostelium discoideum co-culture assay. These results demonstrate that the instability of pAsa5 did not lead to its complete loss as previously proposed but to a more complex rearrangement phenomenon and emphasizes the necessity to grow A. salmonicida in appropriate conditions to preserve the complete virulence of the bacterium. 相似文献

The nutritive value of some commercial wheat varieties grown in Pakistan was measured chemically, including amino acid analysis, and biologically in N-balance experiments with growing rats. The protein content ranged from 13.2% in Punjab-83 to 16% in Barani-83. Lysine per 100g protein varied between 2.46 and 2.75%. The available carbohydrate ranged from 67.3 to 74.7%. Iron content was highest in Sonalika while the concentration of zinc and manganese was highest in Sarhad-82. The protein digestibility (TD), biological value (BV) and net protein utilisation (NPU) varied between 92–95%, 56–68% and 53–65% respectively. Level of wheat protein was negatively correlated with available carbohydrate (r=–0.93), lysine per unit protein (r=–0.67) and BV (r=–0.76). The lysine content (g/16gN) of commercial wheat varieties showed a positive correlation (r=+0.95) with the BV. The protein quality was lowered in varieties having higher content of protein. 相似文献

A pot experiment was undertaken under net house conditions, with three rhizobacterial strains AW1 (Bacillus sp.), AW5 (Providencia sp.) and AW7 (Brevundimonas sp.), applied along with 2/3 recommended dose of nitrogen (N) and full dose of phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) fertilizers (N90P60K60). An enhancement of 14–34% in plant biometric parameters and 28–60% in micronutrient content was recorded in treatments receiving the combination of AW1?+?AW5 strains, as compared to full dose of fertilizer application. The treatment involving inoculation with AW5?+?AW7 recorded highest values of % P and N, with a two-fold enhancement in phosphorus and 66.7% increase in N content, over full dose application of P and K fertilizers. A significant correlation was recorded between plant biomass, panicle weight, grain weight, N, P and iron (Fe) with acetylene reduction activity, indicating the significance of N fixation in overall crop productivity. AbstractThe present study was aimed to anticipate how forest composition, regeneration, biomass production, and carbon storage vary in the ridge top forests of the high mountains of Garhwal Himalaya. For this purpose five major forest types—(a) Pinus wallichiana, (b) Quercus semecarpifolia, (c) Cedrus deodara, (d) Abies spectabilis, and (e) Betula utilis mixed forests—were selected on different ridge tops in the Bhagirathi Catchment Area of the Uttarkashi District of Garhwal Himalaya. The highest species richness (10 species) and stand density (804 ± 184.5 stems ha?1) were recorded in Abies spectabilis forests, whereas lowest species richness (4 species) and species density (428 ± 144.7 stems ha?1) were found in Quercus semecarpifolia forests. The total basal cover (TBC) values were maximum (91.1 ± 24.4 m2 ha?1) in Cedrus deodara forests and minimum (26.5 ± 11.7 m2 ha?1) in Pinus wallichiana forests. The highest total biomass density (TBD) (464.2 ± 152.5 Mg ha?1) and total carbon density (TCD; 208.9 ± 68.6 Mg C ha?1) values were recorded for Cedrus deodara forests; however, lowest TBD (283.4 ± 74.8 Mg ha?1) and TCD (127.5 ± 33.7 Mg C ha?1) values for Quercus semecarpifolia forests.
