The wings of archaic Odonatoidea from the mid-Carboniferous of Argentina show features analogous to "smart" mechanisms in modern dragonflies that are associated with the agile, versatile flight necessary to catch prey in flight. These mechanisms act automatically in flight to depress the trailing edge and to facilitate wing twisting, in response to aerodynamic loading. The presence of similar features suggests that the earliest known odonatoids were already becoming adapted for high-performance flight in association with a predatory habit.  相似文献

Charged particles traveling through matter at speeds larger than the phase velocity of light in the medium emit Cherenkov radiation. Calculations reveal that a given angle of the radiation conical wavefront is associated with two velocities, one above and one below a certain speed threshold. Emission at subluminal but not superluminal speeds is predicted and verified experimentally for relativistic dipoles generated with an optical method based on subpicosecond pulses moving in a nonlinear medium. The dipolar Cherenkov field, in the range of infrared-active phonons, is identical to that of phonon polaritons produced by impulsive laser excitation.  相似文献

SEM and light-microscopical observations, supported by chemical microanalysis with an EDXA system, revealed that light-saturated pixels observed in X-ray negatives of sessile oak (Quercus petraea Liebl.) wood were caused by inorganic deposits present inside multiseriate ray and axial parenchyma cells. Calcium oxalate crystals, silica grains and amorphous granules with varied mineral compositions have been identified. The wood strips of three out of six sampled trees contained measurable amounts of mineral inclusions which were quantified using image analysis. Based on the variations of mineral content observed between trees and within and between annual rings of the same tree, some hypotheses were formulated concerning the factors involved in the formation of inorganic deposits in oak wood. Their occurrence varies depending on the mineral concerned and seems to be controlled largely by a tree effect. The time of formation appears to coincide with a shifting of the oak wood’s functions as a result of heartwood formation processes (inter-annual scale) or changes in leaf phenology and climate (intra-annual scale). In addition, the technical consequences of their presence as well as their effects on wood density measurements through microdensitometry are discussed.  相似文献

Time consuming and expensive tissue culture type techniques are currently used for achieving Lycopersicon esculentum × L. chilense interspecific hybrids. The objective of this study was to determine if the number of viable hybrid seed produced directly from this wide cross could be improved by optimizing female/male parent selection when treated with various hormones in the presence or absence of a surfactant (Triton X-100). Individual or combination treatments of BA(6-benzylaminopurine), GA3 (gibberellic acid), and/or NAA(α-naphthaleneacetic acid) were applied (both with and without surfactant)to the ovaries of two L. esculentum female parents (Fla 7613 and89S) one day following pollination by nineL. chilense accessions. Hormone applications over 1-, 3-, and 5-dayperiods were made and all treatments were compared to a distilled water control. Across all experiments 21 viable hybrids from 1920 fruits (1.1%) were obtained from2128 pollinations. There were five consistent trends observed across three experiments. First, treatments utilizing NAA produced more hybrids than any other treatment hormone. Second, eight of the total 21 hybrids resulted from five consecutive days of hormone treatments (P-value ≤0.01), and six of those eight were realized when NAA was involved. Third, the use of Triton X-100 in combination with the hormone treatments significantly reduced the number of fruits/pollination (P-value ≤ 0.01), but did not significantly reduce the number of overall viable hybrids (P-value > 0.4). Fourth, the L. chilense male parent LA2759 significantly produced the most interspecific hybrids (P-value ≤ 0.04),seven hybrids from 295 fruits, compared to the male parent LA130 which did not produce any hybrids (from 293 fruits) -other accessions were intermediate. Fifth, nearly ten times more hybrids were produced from crosses with Fla 7613 than with 89S. These experiments provide a foundation for future studies to discern specific concentrations, timing and frequency of application of NAA and possibly, GA3, to efficiently produce interspecific hybrids of L. esculentum × L. chilense.
