This investigation was performed to monitor hexachlorocyclohexane isomers (HCHs), dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT, and its metabolites, refered to as DDTs), plasma levels of estradiol-17β (E2), and the gonadosomatic index (GSI) between sampling sites of unpolluted ponds of Gujartal, Jaunpur (control site) and the polluted rivers Gomti (Jaunpur) and Ganga (Varanasi), which affect the reproductive physiology of some edible catfish and carp during the pre-monsoon season. HCHs and DDTs were measured by gas liquid chromatography (GLC) and hormones by radioimmunoassay (RIA). The results indicated that the level of HCHs and DDTs was very high in both the catfish and the carp captured from the polluted rivers compared with the fish captured from the control site. The GSI and E2 values were lower in both groups of fish when compared to the fish from the control site. The results also indicate that catfish showed greater bioaccumulation of HCHs and DDTs than carp, above the permissible limit, as compared to the fish from the control site. In conclusion, fish from the Gomti and Ganga rivers were highly polluted when compared with fish from the control site, as was evident from high levels of tissue bioaccumulation of HCHs and DDTs and decreased levels of plasma E2, inhibiting the reproductive physiology of these species at the receptor level. The levels exceeded the maximum residue limits (MRL) as recommended by Codex, hence it is suggested that the fish should be avoided for food purposes.  相似文献

Rearing of rohu spawn to fry size was carried out at high density (2000 spawn m?2) in large concrete nursery tanks (10 m × 5 m × 1.2 m) to standardize the daily ration of supplementary feed and to assess the impact of soil base on the fry performance. In Set‐1, supplementary feed was provided at 100% (control), 75% and 50% of the daily ration that is commonly used in earthen carp nursery ponds and named as the three treatments T‐1, T‐2 and T‐3 respectively. Although in Set‐II, performance of fry were evaluated in tanks provided with and without soil base. The fry survival was to the tune of 45–59% at this high density of 2000 spawn m?2, indicating the efficacy of the concrete nursery system for high density seed rearing. In Set‐I, T‐2 receiving 75% of the control ration exhibited similar fry growth as that of T‐1, but its fry survival (58.8%) was 10% higher than the latter. This indicated that supplementary feed in a concrete nursery can be reduced up to 25% of that provided in earthen nursery system while ensuring a higher fry yield. However, further reduction up to 50% of the control ration in T‐3 yielded lower fry survival and growth (P < 0.05) revealing inadequacy of the available feed. In Set‐II, treatment without soil base (T‐ns) yielded similar fry growth but 10% higher survival compared to that with the soil base (T‐s) revealing non‐essentiality of soil base in concrete tanks for such short‐term nursery rearing of rohu.  相似文献

Fingerling rearing of pengba, Osteobrama belangeri, was conducted at varied densities for 90 days in 12 outdoor concrete tanks (10 m × 5 m × 1 m). The tanks, grouped into four triplicated treatments, were stocked with fry at 20, 30, 40 and 50 fry m‐3; and designated as control, T‐1, T‐2 and T‐3 respectively. Tanks were filled up to 90 cm depth. Evaporation loss compensated fortnightly. Fish sampling and monitoring of water quality parameters done at fortnight intervals. Survival varied between 71.5% and 84.0% in treatments. Both survival and total length significantly reduced with increasing densities from control to T‐2 (p < .05), while no differences were observed between T‐2 and T‐3 (p > .05). Similarly, significant reductions in final body weight and specific growth rate were observed with increased densities and these values further reduced in T‐3 than T‐2 (p < .05). Such results corroborated the inverse relationship between stocking density and growth. Gross biomass yields in two higher densities (T‐2 and T‐3), despite their lower survivals, were significantly higher than the two lower densities. The numbers of fingerlings harvested were 35, 74 and 112% higher than the control in T‐1, T‐2 and T‐3 respectively. The lowest size obtained even at the highest density (T‐3) was of 7.0 ± 1.0 cm and 3.99 ± 0.17 g, which can be considered as ideal grow‐out stocking size of pengba. Therefore, the study showed feasibility of stocking up to 50 fry m‐3 for rearing from fry to fingerling stage. However, the other lower densities may be used in case of requirement of larger fingerlings.  相似文献

Cytoarchitectonic pattern of the telencephalon of a dwarf snakehead, Channa gachua, is studied by serial transverse sections of the brain (Kluver and Barrera staining). On the anteriormost extremity of the telencephalon, olfactory bulbs terminate that are sessile. The olfactory bulbs comprise four concentric layers, which from outside toward the center are olfactory nerve layer, a glomerular layer, mitral cell layer, and internal cell layer. Large terminal nerve ganglion cells are prominently visible in the dorsomedial position where the bulbs terminate on the telencephalon. In all, 24 nuclei are identified in the telencephalon on ventral and dorsal areas and are named according to their position. Ventral telencephalon exhibits 11 nuclei. On the dorsal telencephalon, there are 13 nuclei. These again are named according to their position on dorsal, ventral, median, lateral, or posterior part. This study reported for the first time in this fish will be useful in tracing the neuronal system of Channa gachua and subsequent studies of the functional aspects of these nuclei in the regulation of reproductive cycle of this species.  相似文献

A 60‐day feeding trial was conducted to test the effect of partial replacement of fishmeal by fish‐offal (FO) in the diet for the freshwater catfish Heteropneustes fossilis. Three isonitrogenous (31.4% CP) diets were formulated to include a reference diet (T1) with 40% fishmeal (FM) and 0% FO and two supplementary diets: one (T2) containing 25% FM and 25% FO and another (T3) containing 20% FM and 30% FO. The FO was fermented along with mustard oil cake and rice bran before using it as an ingredient in the preparation of feed. Two separate trials were conducted with these three diets: a growth trial and a digestibility trial. H. fossilis fed the diets containing FO showed better growth and proximate composition of carcass than those fed the reference diet. Fish fed T3 diet showed maximum feed conversion, protein utilization and growth. Apparent protein digestibility (APD) was also significantly higher in the T3 diet as compared with the T1 diet. The results of the trial indicated that using microbial fermentation, FO could be included up to a 30% level as a partial (50%) replacement of fishmeal in the formulation of diet for H. fossilis.  相似文献

Grass pea (Lathyrus sativus) is an important food‐legume crop for resource‐poor farmers in the developing world. However, given its cultivation in the most underprivileged regions, the crop has not received appropriate scientific attention particularly from the genomic perspective, thereby giving it a status of genomic orphan. Nevertheless, some recent studies have attempted to develop modern molecular tools to strengthen the genetic and genomic research. In the present investigation, a comprehensive collection comprising 176 accessions was analysed using EST‐simple sequence repeats (SSRs). The SSR analysis revealed existence of a total of 51 alleles with an average polymorphic information content value of 0.35. A moderate level of gene diversity was noticed that ranged from 0.04 to 0.73 with an average of 0.43. Noticeably, two distinct subpopulations were recovered using cluster analysis. In addition, the presence of admixtures in population reflected the strong possibilities of gene flow between the accessions across the geographical boundary. In summary, we provide additional insights about the informativeness of available EST‐SSR markers along with an extended understanding of relatedness, genetic structure and gene flow in an under‐researched legume crop.  相似文献

A ten-year-study (1983 to 1992) conducted on nine 15 × 90 m runoff plots at 4% slope compared production efficiency of Leucaena leucocephala and Eucalyptus hybrid based agroforestry as well as monocropping landuse systems in the warm, subhumid climate of the western Himalayan region of India. Treatments for the first sequence were: monocropping systems of leucaena, eucalyptus, Chrysopogon fulvus grass and maize – wheat rotation, and alley cropping systems of grass and crops at 4.5 and 10.5 m alley widths with paired contour tree rows of leucaena and eucalyptus. In the second sequence, alley width increased to 22.5 m in 1989, grass was replaced by turmeric Curcuma longa and paired contour rows of leucaena hedges were introduced in monocropping systems of grain crops and turmeric. Integration of leucaena and eucalyptus trees with crops caused severe reduction of crop yields ranging from 21 to 92% for wheat grain, 59 to 69% for maize grain, 60 to 67% for dry grass and about 50% for turmeric rhizome depending upon the age of trees and alley width. The grain yield of crops stabilized at about 50% reduction with 22.5 m alley width. Total crop biomass (grain + straw) also revealed a similar trend; however, its magnitude of reduction was less severe than for grain. Production of biomass was much lower near the tree rows than in mid alleys. Managing leucaena as contour hedgerows eliminated crop yield reduction in alleys. Performance of grass and turmeric in alleys was not found to be satisfactory. Biomass produced from trees adequately compensated the crop yield reduction. Land equivalent ratios of agroforestry landuses were comparable or even better than monocropping systems indicating suitability of these systems for the western Himalayan valley region. Global production of bananais adversely affected by abiotic stresses, namely, drought, salinity and low temperature which cause changes in morphology, anatomy, physiology and biochemical metabolism in plant. Different banana cultivars respond differently when grown in subtropical regions due to changes in temperature mainly at the time of flowering and fruiting. The subtropical regions persist cold in winter which become a major constraint for proper growth and development of banana. Only few cultivars are identified for cold tolerance. The cold tolerance is a complex phenomenon, involving numbers of interrelated metabolic pathways. With the onset of cold, growth decrease through alteration in the synthesis of metabolites which are regulated by expression of genes and their interactions. Recently, complete genome sequencing, mutation and transgenesis provided deep insight into the complex mechanism of cold tolerance in banana. In this review, efforts are made to compile the findings and to interpret the better application of technologies in understanding the cold tolerance which may assist in banana breeding.  相似文献

We examined intraspecific and inter‐year variation in tolerance of Pinus taeda to two ophiostomatoid fungi, Leptographium terebrantis and Grosmannia huntii. Containerized seedlings of P. taeda from 27, 32, 17 and 23 different elite genetic families were artificially inoculated with L. terebrantis and G. huntii in years 2013, 2014, 2016 and 2017, respectively. Six connector families were inoculated every year. Eight weeks post‐inoculation, lesion and occlusion were measured on each seedling to determine the relative susceptibility/tolerance of families to these fungi. Pinus taeda families widely differed in these parameters suggesting intraspecific variation in the susceptibility/tolerance to the inoculated pathogens. The overall tolerance of the connector families to these fungi varied among the experimental years. These results showed that intraspecific variation to L. terebrantis and G. huntii exists among P. taeda families and it could be possible to select tolerant families to minimize the potential impact due to these fungi.  相似文献

Silvopastoral systems in New Zealand that incorporate trees planted to control soil erosion on hills largely rely on the productivity of the pastoral system for financial returns. The effect on pasture productivity of increasing the tree canopy height by pruning Italian gray alder (Alnus cordata) was investigated by measuring the response of light, soil moisture, soil temperature, pasture production of major pasture species, and grazing behaviour of sheep. A split-plot design with four replicates was used. The main plot treatments were three levels of shade (81, 23, and 12% of available photosynthetic photon flux (PPF)), created by pruning 11 year old alder grown at the same density. The sub-plot treatments were four pasture mixes: perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne), Yorkshire fog (Holcus lanatus), and cocksfoot (Dactylis glomerata), each sown with white clover (Trifolium repens), and cocksfoot sown with lotus (Lotus pedunculatus). Soil temperature was highest under light shade. Total herbage yield at 50 mm stubble height from October to May under heavy and medium shade was 60 and 80%, respectively, of the total herbage harvested under light shade. Cocksfoot had the greatest herbage yield, either with lotus or white clover. The tillering of perennial ryegrass was suppressed by shade more than for the other grass species making ryegrass unsuitable for use in this silvopastoral system. More sheep grazed in the light shade than in the heavy shade, but there was no difference in sheep preference for cocksfoot or Yorkshire fog. Lotus was grazed more frequently than white clover. Pruning of alder to increase canopy height has the potential to improve the productivity of the understorey pasture and its acceptability to sheep.  相似文献
