Purpose

The aim of this work was to study the level and degree of mobility of heavy metals in the soil–plant system and to perform bioindication observations in the Don River estuarine region and the Russian sector of the Taganrog Bay coast.

Materials and methods

The objects of the study included samples of zonal soils (chernozem) and intrazonal soils (alluvial meadow and alluvial-stratified soils, Solonchak, sandy primitive soil) from monitoring stations of the Don river estuarine region and the Taganrog Bay coast, as well as their higher plants: Phragmites australis Cav., Typha angustifolia L., Carex riparia Curtis, Cichorium intybus L., Bolboschoenus maritimus L. Palla, and Rumex confertus Willd. The total concentrations of Mn, Ni, Cd, Cu, Zn, Pb, and Cr in the soils were determined by X-ray fluorescent scanning spectrometer. The concentration of heavy metal mobile forms exchangeable, complex compounds, and acid-soluble metal were extracted using the following reagents: 1 N NH4Ac, pH 4.8; 1 % EDTA in NH4Ac, pH 4.8; 1 N HCl, respectively. Heavy metals in plants were prepared for analysis by dry combustion at 450 °C. The heavy metal concentration in extracts from plants and soils was determined by AAS.

Results and discussion

The total contents of heavy metals in the soil may be described with a successively decreasing series: Mn?>?Cr?>?Zn?>?Ni?>?Cu?>?Pb?>?As?>?Cd. The total concentrations of As, Cd, and Zn in the soil exceed the maximum permissible concentrations levels. Contamination of alluvial soils in the estuarine zone with mobile Сu, Zn, Pb, and Cd has been revealed, which is confirmed by the high bioavailability of Cu and Zn and, to a lesser degree, Cd and Pb accumulating in the tissues of macrophytic plants. Data on the translocation of elements to plant organs have showed their predominant accumulation in the roots. Bioindication by the morphofunctional parameters of macrophytic plants (with a Typha L. species as an example) can be used for revealing the existence of impact zones with elevated contents of metals in aquatic ecosystems.

Conclusions

The results revealed that increased content of Zn, Pb, Cu, Ni, and As in soil have anthropogenic sources. The high content of Cr in the soils is related to the lithogenic factor and, hence, has a natural source.

This paper sets out to clarify the factors in soil erosion and soil conservation. The Czech Republic struggles with soil conservation. Shifts in the rural economy, the loss of good-quality agricultural soil to urbanisation, and sub-optimal land management leading to erosion are at issue. Here, we apply quantitative and qualitative methods to assess erosion risk, whilst considering legislative and policy measures and the responsibility of individual farmer. The studied area was the cadastral district of Rtyně-Podkrkono?í. This choice was based on the fact that farmland there is classified as being subject to ‘no risk’ under current reference measures with regard to soil erosion, and yet 18 erosion events in this area were reported over a period of three years. Our results provide evidence that current measures are insufficient. Although applicable standards were followed, the farmland in question has undergone repeated erosion, whilst soil conservation practice has been ineffective. Compared to the farmland owner, who invests in long-term management, we highlight the problem when a land manager prefers short-term returns. Our assessment of soil erosion was focused on repeated erosion reports that were filed in the monitoring system in relation to farmland parcels managed by a company specialising in maize production. The tolerable erosion rate of 4/t/ha/y was exceeded on all land parcels.  相似文献

A new DNA extraction method and a new multiplex real‐time TaqMan PCR test for detection of Ralstonia solanacearum, Ralstonia pseudosolanacearum and Clavibacter michiganensis subsp. sepedonicus in asymptomatic potato tubers are presented. This new multiplex PCR and three published TaqMan PCRs for detection of R. solanacearum and/or R. pseudosolanacearum and/or R. syzygii spp. and/or C. michiganensis subsp. sepedonicus were validated using linear regression analysis for estimating the Ct values and its variation at 5 × 103 bacteria mL?1. The three published PCRs that have been validated are Massart et al. (2014, detecting R. solanacearum and C. michiganensis subsp. sepedonicus), Weller et al. (1999, detecting R. solanacearum, R. pseudosolanacearum and R. syzygii spp.) and Gudmestad et al. (2009, detecting C. michiganensis subsp. sepedonicus). All tested PCRs were fit for purpose for their target organisms. The PCR tests have different target genes, allowing one of the sets to be used as first screening test and another as second screening test for the detection of R. solanacearum and/or R. pseudosolanacearum and/or C. michiganensis subsp. sepedonicus in asymptomatic potato tubers.  相似文献

Generalist fish species can feed on a wide resource spectrum and across trophic levels depending on resource availability and trophic interactions. Crucian carp (Carassius carassius) represents a good candidate species to investigate variation in the trophic ecology of generalist fish as it can be found in highly variable fish communities and its resource use is well documented. In this study, we explored the trophic ecology of crucian carp at the individual and population levels using stable isotope and gut content analysis. We tested if trophic resource use varied according to lake productivity, predation risk, intra- and interspecific competition, or individual fish size. We found that crucian carp resource preference was highly variable among and within lakes. In predator-free lakes, small crucian carp occurred in high densities, showed increased interindividual specialisation, and relied mainly on pelagic zooplankton. In presence of predators, large crucian carp occurred in low densities and included greater proportions of benthic macroinvertebrates in their diet. This shift in resource use was further favoured in productive, shallow lakes where littoral prey were probably abundant. Resource partitioning was an important factor determining crucian carp niche use, as fish had higher trophic position in absence of other cyprinids. Crucian carp showed highly dynamic resource use and food preferences in response to variable environmental conditions. Overlooking complex diet preferences of generalist fish may lead to an oversimplification of freshwater community dynamics.  相似文献

Reliable predictions of metabolizable energy (ME) from digestible energy (DE) are necessary to prescribe nutrient requirements of beef cattle accurately. A previously developed database that included 87 treatment means from 23 respiration calorimetry studies has been updated to evaluate the efficiency of converting DE to ME by adding 47 treatment means from 11 additional studies. Diets were fed to growing-finishing cattle under individual feeding conditions. A citation-adjusted linear regression equation was developed where dietary ME concentration (Mcal/kg of dry matter [DM]) was the dependent variable and dietary DE concentration (Mcal/kg) was the independent variable: ME = 1.0001 × DE – 0.3926; r2 = 0.99, root mean square prediction error [RMSPE] = 0.04, and P < 0.01 for the intercept and slope. The slope did not differ from unity (95% CI = 0.936 to 1.065); therefore, the intercept (95% CI = −0.567 to −0.218) defines the value of ME predicted from DE. For practical use, we recommend ME = DE – 0.39. Based on the relationship between DE and ME, we calculated the citation-adjusted loss of methane, which yielded a value of 0.2433 Mcal/kg of dry matter intake (DMI; SE = 0.0134). This value was also adjusted for the effects of DMI above maintenance, yielding a citation-adjusted relationship: CH4, Mcal/kg = 0.3344 – 0.05639 × multiple of maintenance; r2 = 0.536, RMSPE = 0.0245, and P < 0.01 for the intercept and slope. Both the 0.2433 value and the result of the intake-adjusted equation can be multiplied by DMI to yield an estimate of methane production. These two approaches were evaluated using a second, independent database comprising 129 data points from 29 published studies. Four equations in the literature that used DMI or intake energy to predict methane production also were evaluated with the second database. The mean bias was substantially greater for the two new equations, but slope bias was substantially less than noted for the other DMI-based equations. Our results suggest that ME for growing and finishing cattle can be predicted from DE across a wide range of diets, cattle types, and intake levels by simply subtracting a constant from DE. Mean bias associated with our two new methane emission equations suggests that further research is needed to determine whether coefficients to predict methane from DMI could be developed for specific diet types, levels of DMI relative to body weight, or other variables that affect the emission of methane.  相似文献

In September, a high mortality among eggs ofAdoxophyes orana was observed. Temperature effects were believed to be responsible. In controlled conditions, constant temperatures of 13 or 14°C proved lethal to most eggs, but mortality was about halved when temperature changes were gradual. Low temperature (5°C or less) for 6h was lethal when eggs were exposed within a few hours of oviposition. This was also due to a rapid change in temperature. Survival of eggs ofA. orana is most affected by long cool periods and is slightly affected by cold nights.  相似文献

The authors describe the synchronization of farrowing by the induction of parturition with a prostaglandin F2alpha analogue (Cloprostenol). The time sequence of the beginning of parturitions was recorded in 147 sows after administration of 175 microgram Cloprostenol. 93.7% of the parturitions take place between the 14th and 39th hour after administration, the peak time being between the 24th and 27th hour (31.2%). The schedule of the farrowing days is described as a prerequisite for a qualitative change in the organization of work in large pig herds.  相似文献
