We undertook a literature search related to pig production facilities with two major aims: first, to review all the likely benefits that might be gained from air quality improvements; and second, to review previous research that had identified statistically significant factors affecting airborne pollutants and environmental parameters, so that these factors could be considered in a multifactorial analysis aimed at explaining variations in air pollutant concentrations. Ammonia, carbon dioxide, viable bacteria, endotoxins, and inhalable and respirable particles were identified as major airborne pollutants in the review. We found that high concentrations of airborne pollutants in livestock buildings could increase occupational health and safety risks, compromise the health, welfare, and production efficiency of animals, and affect the environment. Therefore, improving air quality could reduce environmental damage and improve animal and worker health. To achieve a reduction in pollutant concentrations, a better understanding of the factors influencing airborne pollutant concentrations in piggery buildings is required. Most of the work done previously has used simple correlation matrices to identify relationships between key factors and pollutant concentrations, without taking into consideration multifactorial effects simultaneously in a model. However, our review of this prior knowledge was the first important step toward developing a more inclusive statistical model. This review identified a number of candidate risk factors, which we then took into consideration during the development of multifactorial statistical models. Vitamin A plays a critical role in many essential life processes. In herbivores, it is either derived from plant β-carotene or directly as a dietary supplement. In cattle, vitamin A has the potential to influence various carcass traits that are sought by specific beef markets. A group of 20 Angus steers was removed from pasture and fed a low β-carotene and vitamin A cereal-based ration on a feedlot for 308 days. Ten of the steers were supplemented with vitamin A (retinyl palmitate, 60 IU of vitamin A/100 kg body weight/day) and the other ten received no supplement. The results demonstrated that restriction of vitamin A intake changed intramuscular fat deposition without changing subcutaneous fat depots. Angus steers that had been depleted of vitamin A showed increased intramuscular fat in the longissimus thoracis et lumborum (LTL) by 35% (P < 0.026) and seam fat area at the quartering site by 33% (P < 0.0273), when compared with cattle supplemented with vitamin A. There were no changes in intramuscular fat in the semitendinosus. Visually assessed marbling scores were also higher (19%; P < 0.094) in the non-supplemented, depleted group. There was no effect of vitamin A depletion on cattle growth and other meat traits (eye muscle area, meat colour, pH, meat cut weight), meat eating attributes (tenderness, cooking loss) or muscle fibre diameter. The only difference (P < 0.0177) among the meat traits was fat colour where depleted animals had whiter fat than the controls. Moreover, the fat from the vitamin A depleted group was softer with a lower melting point. We conclude that the reduced vitamin A consumption, leading to vitamin A depletion, increases intramuscular fat. On the other hand, the vitamin A depletion did not increase subcutaneous fat depth or change other meat quality traits, suggesting that marbling and these other traits are not invariably related. 相似文献

Subcutaneous adipose tissues were biopsied in purebred Jersey (n=17), purebred Limousin (n=17) and reciprocal F1 Jersey × Limousin crossbred (n=33) calves at the age of 9–10 months. Triacylglycerol fatty acids were extracted and analysed for sex and breed differences. Heterosis, additive and maternal variances were estimated. All calves were pasture‐fed in a single management group and biopsied from the same anatomical site. Heifer calves had significantly higher proportions of palmitoleate, total mono‐unsaturated fatty acids, desaturation index and lower stearate than steer calves. Significant breed differences were observed in that Limousin calves had the highest proportions of palmitate and total saturated fatty acids, whereas Jersey calves had the most palmitoleate and desaturation index. Dominance effects were evident in the proportions of palmitate, stearate, desaturation and elongation enzyme indices due to the observed highly significant heterosis effect. Myristate, palmitate and total saturated fatty acids were considered heritable due to the observed highly significant additive genetic effect. 相似文献

The internal concentrations and emission rates of ammonia (NH3), total bacteria, respirable endotoxins, and inhalable and respirable particles were monitored in 160 piggery buildings in four states of Australia (Queensland, Victoria, Western Australia, and South Australia) between autumn 1997 and autumn 1999. Emissions were calculated for individual buildings as a product of internal concentration and ventilation rate, which were estimated by a carbon dioxide balance method. Relative humidity and temperature were also measured. The overall mean emission rates of NH3, total bacteria, respirable endotoxins, inhalable particles, and respirable particles per 500 kg live weight from Australian piggery buildings were 1442.5 mg h(-1), 82.2 x 10(6) cfu h(-1), 20.1 x 10(3) EU h(-1), 1306.7 mg h(-1), and 254.7 mg h(-1), respectively. Internal concentrations of key airborne pollutants have been reported in companion articles. Building characteristics and management systems used in the piggeries were documented at the time of sampling and used in the subsequent statistical modeling of variations in pollutant emission rates. The emissions model used all statistically significant factors identified during prior modeling conducted for individual pollutant concentrations and ventilation airflow. The identification of highly significant factors affecting emission rates and internal concentrations should aid the development of strategies for the industry to reduce emission rates from individual buildings, thus improving the environmental performance of piggery operations. In the second part of the article, specific recommendations are made based on the overall study results. 相似文献

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of vitamin C on growth and quality of semen from Oreochromis niloticus breeders. One hundred and sixty males were fed with different levels of vitamin C (0, 261, 599 and 942 mg/kg diet). The higher weight values were recorded for 599 (166 g) and 942 (175 g) mg of vitamin C/kg diet. Sperm motility, vigour and concentration were higher with 599 and 942 mg of vitamin C/kg diet. The semen volume, gonadosomatic index and plasma protein data from the last week showed a direct relationship with increasing levels of vitamin C. No changes were observed in the hepatosomatic index and blood glucose. The haematocrit and erythrocyte showed higher values estimated by equations derived at 850 and 638 mg vitamin C/kg diet, respectively. The leucocytes were inversely proportional to the increasing levels of vitamin C. After 100 days of feeding, animals fed the diet containing 942 mg vitamin C/kg diet had higher sperm motility, linearity, curvilinear velocity, straight line velocity and average path velocity (p < .05). Higher values of beat cross‐frequency were observed in broodfish fed diets containing 942 and 599 mg vitamin C/kg. The different vitamin C levels did not cause differences in straightness, lateral head displacement and sperm morphology. For Nile tilapia males on intensive rearing and handling conditions, vitamin C levels between 599 and 942 mg/kg may be used for a better performance and quality of semen. 相似文献
