A 13‐month‐old Holstein bull was presented for right‐sided exophthalmos. Ophthalmologic examination noted that the animal was visual in both eyes, but that the right pupil was persistently dilated and very sluggish to constrict when stimulated with a bright light and that normal ocular motility was absent. Fundic examination of the right eye was normal as was a complete ophthalmologic examination of the left eye. Radiographs at presentation did not reveal the presence of sinusitis or other skull abnormalities. Initial treatment comprised intravenous antibiotics and anti‐inflammatories for orbital inflammation over a 14‐day period. There was no perceptible change in the appearance or neuro‐ophthalmologic examination of the right eye during hospitalization. The animal was discharged to the owner's care, but 3 weeks later was found recumbent with unilateral strabismus of the left eye and a fixed right pupil. Due to the inability to rise and rapid deterioration, humane euthanasia was performed, and a full postmortem examination, preceded by a MRI, was performed that identified abscesses extending bilaterally through the round foramina obliterating the cavernous sinus region, as well as abscessation of the right mandible, right trigeminal neuritis, right‐sided sinusitis, and right‐sided otitis media. Cavernous sinus syndrome should be considered in cattle with a combination of exophthalmos and neuro‐ophthalmologic abnormalities involving cranial nerves III, IV, V, and VI, whose branches are located within the cavernous sinus.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to examine the feasibility of using aerosolized fluorescent microspheres to examine particle distribution in the respiratory tract of birds following aerosol exposure. Adult domestic pigeons (Columbia livia domestica; n = 5 birds per microsphere size) were exposed to aerosolized monodispersed populations of various sized carboxylate microspheres (0.5, 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, 6.0, and 10.0 microm) for 30 min. For aerosol-exposure purposes, the birds were anesthetized with injectable anesthetics, intubated, and placed on positive-pressure ventilation using a mechanical ventilator. Immediately following aerosol exposure, the birds were euthanatized, and carcasses were preserved via intravenous infusion of modified paraformaldehyde/gluteraldehyde fixative (pH = 7.2 and 340 mOsm). Initial evaluation of microsphere distribution in air sacs (cranial and caudal thoracic and abdominal) and at the level of the ostia was performed using a stereoscopic microscope with an epifluorescent module. More detailed examination of the distribution of microspheres within the respiratory tract was achieved using a confocal scanning laser microscope with a krypton argon laser and a scanning electron microscope. The results from this study revealed that positive-pressure ventilation resulted in distribution of smaller sized fluorescent microspheres (sizes 1.0, 2.0, and 3.0 microm) throughout the pigeon's respiratory tracts, and these microspheres were in highest concentration in the secondary bronchi and ostia for all of the examined air sacs. The larger sized beads (6.0 and 10.0) were confined to the upper airway (trachea and primary bronchi). The results from this study allow for a better understanding of particle deposition following positive-pressure ventilation and aerosol exposure in birds.  相似文献

Riboflavin deficiency, even in a relatively early stage, greatly lowers the resistance of the rat to endemic typhus, thereby resulting in a fatal disease. Not only the serosal cells, but also the endothelial cells in several organs, notably the Kupfer cells of the liver, become greatly distended with rickettsiae under these conditions. Preliminary experiments strongly suggest that advanced vitamin A deficiency, even when making animals markedly cachetic, does not have a comparable effect. Riboflavin deficient animals remain alive for several weeks with an abnormal intracellular metabolism. This type of deficiency is worthy of further study as a possible method of approach in the investigation of other intracellular parasites and filtrable viruses. Speculation regarding the mechanism concerned also suggests the desirability of a study of the effects of this deficiency upon the production of immune bodies in general.  相似文献

Objective To evaluate the surgical results and fertility of mares bred at various intervals relative to surgical management of urovagina. Design Sixty-one mares underwent surgery to correct vesicovaginal reflux. Surgery was performed at varying times relative to breeding and postoperative fertility was evaluated. Results Five mares were lost to follow-up and a further four were electively not bred. Of the remaining 52 mares, seasonal pregnancy and live foaling rates were 67% (35/52) and 54% (26/48), respectively. When mares were bred in the same cycle as the surgery, the first cycle following surgery, the second cycle following surgery or the following breeding season after surgery the seasonal pregnancy rates were 89% (8/9), 63% (10/16), 67% (2/3) and 63% (15/24), respectively. After censoring four mares that died of natural causes pre-foaling, the foaling rates were 88% (7/8), 50% (7/14), 0% (0/3), 52% (12/23), respectively. All mares bred in the same cycle as surgery or in the next cycle were bred once only that season, so the pregnancy rate per cycle of 72% (18/25) was identical to the seasonal pregnancy rate. Conclusions Good fertility (comparable to a normal population of mares) was achieved following surgery and the results suggest that delaying breeding until the following breeding season is not necessary. In addition, breeding in the same cycle as surgical repair is a previously unreported technique that should be considered to maintain a yearly foaling interval.  相似文献

A 19-year-old Thoroughbred gelding presented with sudden onset, non-weight bearing lameness in the right hindlimb. Radiography confirmed distal luxation of the patella, which was replaced into its normal anatomical location under general anaesthesia. There were no pathological sequelae noted on follow-up examination 9 months after the initial injury. To our knowledge, this is a rare manifestation of patellar luxation, only reported once previously in the equine literature.  相似文献
