Spatial scale is an important consideration when managing forest wildlife habitat, and models can be used to improve our understanding of these habitats at relevant scales. Our objectives were to determine whether stand- or microhabitat-scale variables better predicted bird metrics (diversity, species presence, and abundance) and to examine breeding bird response to clearcut size and age in a highly forested landscape. In 2004-2007, vegetation data were collected from 62 even-aged stands that were 3.6-34.6 ha in size and harvested in 1963-1990 on the Monongahela National Forest, WV, USA. In 2005-2007, we also surveyed birds at vegetation plots. We used classification and regression trees to model breeding bird habitat use with a suite of stand and microhabitat variables. Among stand variables, elevation, stand age, and stand size were most commonly retained as important variables in guild and species models. Among microhabitat variables, medium-sized tree density and tree species diversity most commonly predicted bird presence or abundance. Early successional and generalist bird presence, abundance, and diversity were better predicted by microhabitat variables than stand variables. Thus, more intensive field sampling may be required to predict habitat use for these species, and management may be needed at a finer scale. Conversely, stand-level variables had greater utility in predicting late-successional species occurrence and abundance; thus management decisions and modeling at this scale may be suitable in areas with a uniform landscape, such as our study area. Our study suggests that late-successional breeding bird diversity can be maximized long-term by including harvests >10 ha in size into our study area and by increasing tree diversity. Some harvesting will need to be incorporated regularly, because after 15 years, the study stands did not provide habitat for most early successional breeding specialists.  相似文献

Canine soft tissue sarcomas (STSs) are locally invasive mesenchymal neoplasms. Electrochemotherapy (ECT) is an antitumour local ablative treatment that uses electric pulses to enhance the intracellular delivery of cytotoxic drugs. The aim of this retrospective study was to review the current treatment for STSs and to evaluate the efficacy and safety of ECT with bleomycin in canine STSs. Fifty‐two dogs with 54 STSs were included. Three groups were arranged: (a) ECT alone, (b) intra‐operative ECT and (c) adjuvant ECT. Signalment, tumour size, location, histological grade and margins and ECT parameters were collected. Recurrence rate (RR) and disease‐free interval (DFI) were calculated. Treatment toxicity was assessed using a 6‐point scale. STSs were mostly located on limbs (77.8%). Median tumour size was 4.3 cm (range 0.4‐17.0 cm). Most STSs were grade I (47.7%) and II (50.0%), and histological margins were incomplete in 94.5% of cases. Two complete remissions, one partial remission and one stable disease were recorded in group 1. Group 2 and 3 were similar for tumour location, size and grade, histological margins, treatment toxicity, pulse frequency and voltage. Moreover, RR and DFI were similar between group 2 and 3 (23% and 25%, 81.5 and 243 days, respectively). Local toxicity post ECT was mild (score ≤ 2) in 66.7% of cases. Higher toxicity score was associated with higher pulse voltage (1200 vs 1000 V/cm) (P = 0.0473). ECT coupled with bleomycin resulted safe and efficient in tumour local control and should be considered as an option for treatment of canine STSs.  相似文献

This study aimed to define the pharmacokinetic profiles of dexmedetomidine and methadone administered simultaneously in dogs by either an oral transmucosal route or intramuscular route and to determine the bioavailability of the oral transmucosal administration relative to the intramuscular one of both drugs, so as the applicability of this administration route in dogs. Twelve client‐owned dogs, scheduled for diagnostic procedures, were treated with a combination of dexmedetomidine hydrochloride (10 μg/kg) and methadone hydrochloride (0.4 mg/kg) through an oral transmucosal route or intramuscularly. Oral transmucosal administration caused ptyalism in most subjects, and intramuscular administration caused transient peripheral vasoconstriction. The results showed reduced and delayed absorption of both dexmedetomidine and methadone when administered through an oral transmucosal route, with median (range) Cmax values of 0.82 (0.42–1.49) ng/ml and 13.22 (2.80–52.30) ng/ml, respectively. The relative bioavailability was low: 16.34% (dexmedetomidine) and 15.5% (methadone). Intramuscular administration resulted in a more efficient absorption profile, with AUC and Cmax values for both drugs approximately 10 times higher. Dexmedetomidine and methadone administered simultaneously by an oral transmucosal route using injectable formulations were not well absorbed through the oral mucosa. Nevertheless, additional studies on these drugs combination using alternative administration routes are recommended.  相似文献

To assess long-term effects of naturally occurring infection with Chlamydophila spp. on animal health, 25 calves were grouped according to their chlamydial carrier status and checked for health parameters from 2 to 7 months of age. Monthly PCR testing revealed persistent or frequently recurring infections with Chlamydophila pecorum and Chlamydophila abortus in Group 2 (Chl+, n=13), but not in Group 1 (Chl-, n=12). Despite the absence of any clinical illness, calves in Group 2 showed significantly higher body temperatures (subfebrile), lower bodyweights, reduced serum iron concentrations, lower total haemoglobin and haematocrit values. Counting and flow cytometric differentiation of peripheral white blood cells revealed a general decrease in leukocytes in Group 2. At necropsy, follicular bronchiolitis was found in 10/13 calves in Group 2 but in none of Group 1, and the weight of pharyngeal tonsils was significantly higher in Group 2. In conclusion, naturally occurring infections with Chlamydophila species in calves were found to be associated with chronic effects on animal health at a subclinical level.  相似文献

The addition of various nitrogen sources, such as liquid hog manure and mineral medium, to pine wood accelerated the composting process in Dewar vessels, which was obvious from the increased decomposition temperature and the more intensive oxygen consumption and carbon dioxide production. During composting in Dewar vessels of artificially PAH-contaminated pine wood soaked with liquid manure, the PAH degradation was influenced by the inoculum used. The fastest PAH degradation was achieved by compost addition, but the most intensive carbon dioxide evolution was measured with hydrocarbon-polluted soil as an additive. After 61 days, the PAH content of the wood was reduced from each 1000 mg/kg to 26 mg/kg of phenanthrene and 83 mg/kg of pyrene. The relation between the microbial wood decay and PAH degradation shows that the detoxification at least of artificially PAH-polluted wood demands only a partial wood decay.

A pilot scale percolator was applied to composting of artificially contaminated pine wood and really polluted waste wood. After 27 days of remediation, the portion of residual PAHs was higher in the case of the really polluted material. The slower degradation in the real waste wood may be explained by the lower bioavailability of pollutants in comparison with the artificially contaminated wood. In really polluted wood, the degradation rate of PAHs depended on their degree of condensation (the higher the number of aromatic rings the smaller the degradation rate was).  相似文献

Emmer wheat, Triticum dicoccon Schrank was one of the founder crops of Neolithic agriculture. Though its cultivation was largely replaced by hexaploid wheats 2000 years ago, pockets of small scale cultivation can still be found. One such area is the Asturias region of Northern Spain, where emmer wheat remains a traditional crop for high value specialist culinary uses, and farmers grow locally adapted landraces. In order to study the diversity of these landraces, we sampled emmer wheat from different regions of Asturias, and genotyped multiple plants from each village using nuclear and chloroplast microsatellites. A high level of variation was observed with markers from both genomes, including a novel chloroplast haplotype. A strong geographic structure was observed in the Asturian emmer wheats in both the chloroplast markers and the nuclear microsatellite data.  相似文献

Organic amendments could be used as alternative to inorganic P fertilisers, but a clear understanding of the relationship among type of P amendment, microbial activity and changes in soil P fractions is required to optimise their use. Two P-deficient soils were amended with farmyard manure (FYM), poultry litter (PL) and biogenic waste compost (BWC) at 10 g?dw?kg?1 soil and incubated for 72 days. Soil samples were collected at days 0, 14, 28, 56 and 72 and analysed for microbial biomass C, N and P, 0.5 M NaHCO3 extractable P and activity of dehydrogenase and alkaline phosphomonoesterase. Soil P fractions were sequentially extracted in soil samples collected at days 0 and 72. All three amendments increased cumulative CO2 release, microbial biomass C, N and P and activity of dehydrogenase and alkaline phosphomonoesterase compared to unamended soils. The increase in microbial biomass C and N was highest with PL, whereas the greatest increase in microbial biomass P was induced with FYM. All three biomass indices showed the same temporal pattern, with the highest values on day 14 and the lowest on day 72. All amendments increased 0.5 M NaHCO3 extractable P concentrations with the smallest increase with BWC and the greatest with FYM, although more P was added with PL than with FYM. Available P concentrations decreased over time in the amended soils. Organic amendments increased the concentration of the labile P pools (resin and NaHCO3-P) and of NaOH-P, but had little effect on the concentrations of acid-soluble P pools and residual P except for increasing the concentration of organic P in the concentrated HCl pool. Resin P and NaHCO3-Pi pools decreased over time whereas NaOH-Pi and all organic P pools increased. It is concluded that organic amendments can provide P to plants and can stimulate the build-up of organic P forms in soils which may provide a long-term slow-release P source for plants and soil organisms.  相似文献

Legume pre-crops may increase P uptake of the following wheat, but the mechanisms behind this effect are unclear. A rotation study was carried out to assess the concentrations of rhizosphere P pools of three grain legumes and wheat (phase 1) and their effects on P uptake and P pools in the rhizosphere of the following wheat (phase 2). Faba bean, chickpea, white lupin and wheat were grown for 10 weeks in a loamy sand soil with low P availability. The following wheat was grown in the pre-crop soil with and without addition of pre-crop residues. Among the pre-crops, white lupin had the strongest effect on the P pools; it depleted the labile P pools, resin P and NaHCO3-Pi and also the less labile P pools, NaOH-Pi and residual P; whereas the concentration of NaHCO3-Po was higher than that in the rhizosphere of the other pre-crops. White lupin had a smaller biomass compared to faba bean which depleted the P pools to a lesser extent. Phosphorus uptake of the following wheat was greatest in white lupin pre-crop soil. Chickpea increased P uptake of the following wheat when residues were added. In the presence of residues, wheat after legumes depleted labile P pools to a greater extent than wheat after wheat, but this coincided with greater P uptake only in wheat after chickpea and white lupin, which may be explained by the small root biomass of wheat after faba bean. The results show that the greater P uptake of the following wheat induced by pre-crops may be due to two mechanisms: P mobilisation (white lupin) or P addition with legume residues (chickpea). This study further showed that P uptake by a crop is only partly a function of the depletion of P in the rhizosphere; another important factor is the ability to exploit a large soil volume.  相似文献

A complementary radiographic projection of the maxillary sinus, known as Wiener Schule, is not known outside of German-speaking countries as a potential complementary projection for a radiographic investigation. A cassette is held by a mechanical device parallel to the nose, with the upper margin above the eye and the head rotated 20° to the affected side. A radiographic angle for a ventral 30° lateral-dorsolateral oblique view, high kilovolt, and low milliampere techniques is recommended. The use of a grid is unnecessary. This oblique radiographic view is useful to image the orbit, the zygomatic bone, the maxillary sinus, the ventral conchal sinus, the conchofrontal sinus, the infraorbital canal, and the roots of the four caudal maxillary cheek teeth (Triadan 108-111 or 208-211). Well positioned, the nasolacrimal canal divides the maxillary sinus in two equal parts. Fluid lines and abnormalities within the named sinus can be detected, quantified, and related to the affected side. The Wiener Schule radiographic projection is a potential complementary tool for radiographic workup and control studies, especially to evaluate therapeutic progress in cases without access to computed tomography.  相似文献

Eltenac (ELT) [4-(2,6-dichlorophenyl)amino-3-thiophene] is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that was developed for veterinary use in horses and cattle. The pharmacokinetics of ELT was evaluated in horses at 0.5 mg/kg body weight (BW) after single IV injection after 5 days of repeated IV administration and after a single IV injection in horses previously subjected to 250 mg/kg BW of sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) as an alkalization treatment. The aim was to determine whether blood and subsequent urinary alkalization could modify the pharmacokinetics of ELT. Drug quantification was performed with serum and urine using high performance liquid chromatography with UV-visible detection. The results were also integrated with cyclo-oxygenase-inhibition literature data to review the dosage scheme of ELT in horses. After a single intravenous administration, ELT was characterized by rapid distribution (mean t½λ1 = 0.18 ± 0.07 hour) and a short elimination half-life (mean t½λ2 = 2.9 ± 0.68 hour). The volume of distribution was small (Vdss = 253.51 ± 47.55 mL/kg), which is likely because of the high percentage of drug protein binding (approximately 97%). The AUC0-∞ and ClB were 6.92 ± 0.84 h*μg/mL and 73.2 ± 10 mL/h/kg, respectively. Repeated administration did not cause either accumulation or modification of the pharmacokinetic profile. The in vitro effective concentrations were maintained for a 6-hour period. The alkalization procedure appeared to accelerate drug elimination, as ELT was quantifiable only for 6 hours; however, the drug clearance was not significantly modified. Thus, the administration of alkaline compounds to accelerate the elimination of ELT is not completely confirmed.  相似文献
