Local cooling of the brain by the respiratory air is found in many animal species. The mechanism is based on cooling of the nasal vein blood and heat transfer in the cavernous sinus/carotid artery complex and is therefore not active in anaesthetised, intubated animals. The present experiment was made to investigate the effects of oxygen flushing of the nasal cavities in such animals. Nine anaesthetised, intubated male pigs were used. The temperatures in the third ventricle and rectum were measured continuously. Oxygen was infused into the nasal cavities during 10 min periods interrupted by 10 min without flow. The nasal oxygen flow constantly induced a rapid, reversible and flow dependant decrease in brain temperature: 0.25 degree C +/- 0.04, (n = 2) (mean +/- SD, n) at < 4 l/min; 1.35 degrees C +/- 0.78, (n = 20) at 4-6 l/min; and 1.44 degrees C +/- 0.62, (n = 6) at > 6 l/min. The ventricle temperature decreased 0.59 degree C +/- 0.23, (n = 8) when the animals were transferred to spontaneous respiration and the tracheal tube removed. It may be possible to protect the brain in intubated animals and humans from heat-induced damages by establishment of nasal flushing. 相似文献

Abstract Alternative selection strategies in the bull dam path were investigated to reduce the magnitude of bias. The study's objective was to examine the effect of alternative strategies under the assumption of particular biases. Bias in the evaluation of bull dam estimated breeding values (EBVs) causes an estimated reduction of 32% in their genetic superiority, compared with the theoretical potential. Biased evaluations caused selection of too many bull dams from later lactations. Two alternative strategies were developed to account for existing bias. Results suggested that the influence of bias could be reduced. The estimated improvement in selection response was 11–13% higher than current practice. Problems with biased EBVs in conventional breeding schemes are discussed and a method to counteract bias from future breeding schemes is presented. 相似文献

Cattle weight gain responses to seasonal weather variability are difficult to predict for rangelands because few long-term (>20 yr) studies have been conducted. However, an increased understanding of temperature and precipitation influences on cattle weight gains is needed to optimize stocking rates and reduce enterprise risk associated with climatic variability. Yearling steer weight gain data collected at the USDA-ARS High Plains Grasslands Research Station at light, moderate, and heavy stocking rates for 30 years (1982–2011) were used to examine the effects of spring (April–June) and summer (July–September) temperature and precipitation, as well as prior-growing-season (prior April–September) and fall/winter (October–March) precipitation, on beef production (kg · ha?1). At heavier stocking rates, steer production was more sensitive to seasonal weather variations. A novel finding was that temperature (relatively cool springs and warm summers) played a large predictive role on beef production. At heavier stocking rates, beef production was highest during years with cool, wet springs and warm, wet summers, corresponding to optimum growth conditions for this mixed C3–C4 plant community. The novelty and utility of these findings may increase the efficacy of stocking rate decision support tools. The parsimonious model structure presented here includes three-month seasonal clusters that are forecasted and freely available from the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration up to a year in advance. These seasonal weather forecasts can provide ranchers with an increased predictive capacity to adjust stocking rates (in advance of the grazing season) according to predicted seasonal weather conditions, thereby reducing enterprise risk. 相似文献

Influence of malt roasting on the oxidative stability of sweet wort was evaluated based on radical intensity, volatile profile, content of transition metals (Fe and Cu) and thiols. Malt roasting had a large influence on the oxidative stability of sweet wort. Light sweet worts were more stable with low radical intensity, low Fe content, and ability to retain volatile compounds when heated. At mild roasting, the Fe content in the wort increased but remained close to constant with further roasting. Dark sweet worts were less stable with high radical intensities, high Fe content, and a decreased ability to retain volatiles. Results suggested that the Maillard reaction compounds formed during the roasting of malt are prooxidants in sweet wort. A thiol-removing capacity was observed in sweet wort, and it was gradually inhibited by malt roasting. It is possibly caused by thiol oxidizing enzymes present in the fresh malt. 相似文献

The purpose of this research was to investigate whether cutting direction and storage temperature could influence aroma formation and respiration rates in minimally processed lettuce. Lettuce was cut both longitudinally and transverse to the mid-rib and stored at 6 and 10 °C for 4 and 5 days. The experiment was performed in January and March 2008. Changes in respiration rate were analyzed during storage, and aroma analysis was carried out after 4 and 5 days of storage in January and March, respectively. Respiration rates increased with increasing storage temperatures. Transverse cuts to the rib were strongly related with volatiles of the lipoxygenase (LOX) pathway i.e. cis-3-hexenal, cis-3-hexenol and trans-2-hexenol, while longitudinal cutting enhanced formation of volatiles from other metabolic routes. Aroma formation was also influenced by storage temperature, where higher storage temperatures resulted in increases in α-longipinene, 2-methylbutanal and 3-methylbutanal. Our results demonstrate that cutting the lettuce transverse to the mid-rib caused more severe damage to the tissue than longitudinal cutting, based on aroma production of LOX volatiles. 相似文献

Most work dealing with the impact of species-rich herbage on milk fatty acid content has hitherto been carried out in alpine areas or semi-natural grasslands. The main objective of the present study was to examine the effect of herbs sown and intensively managed in a lowland sward on the concentration of n−3 and n−6 fatty acids and vitamins in cows' milk compared to clover grass and total mixed ration (TMR) feeding. Twelve cows were housed in tie-stall and randomly allocated to three diets fed ad libitum for 14 days: HERBS (mixture of fresh herbs); CLOVER (mixture of fresh white clover and ryegrass); or TMR (total mixed ration based on silage and concentrate). n−3 fatty acid (FA) content was similar between the three diets, while n−6 FA content was highest in the TMR diet. A twofold increase in n−3 FA concentration in milk was observed when feeding HERBS compared to CLOVER and TMR (0.8, 0.4 and 0.3 g/kg milk, respectively). n−6 FA concentration increased as well when feeding HERBS (1.4, 0.9 and 1.0 g/kg milk for HERBS, CLOVER and TMR, respectively). Transfer efficiency from feed to milk was doubled for n−3 FA when feeding HERBS and for transfer efficiency of n−6 FA from feed to milk an increase of 28% was observed for HERBS compared to CLOVER. Retinol content was highest in HERBS milk, while there was no difference in α-tocopherol and ß-carotene milk content between the three diets. The results thus support previous findings on the effect of herbs on the milk fatty acid profile, but it will require further research to understand the effect of herbs on n−3 and n−6 FA concentration in milk. In conclusion, milk content of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), like n−3 and n−6 FA, was significantly increased when herbs constituted the major part of the herbage, despite lower or similar dietary content of n−3 and n−6 FA in herbs compared to clover grass- and TMR diets. 相似文献

Vegetation control (VC) in forest plantations often increases growth of crop trees but can also affect biomass and nutrient
partitioning to tree components. We examined above-ground biomass and macronutrients, leaf area and crown structure in 5-year
old Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziessi (Mirb.) Franco) growing with VC and with no vegetation control (NVC) in coastal Washington, United States of America. Trees
in VC had larger stem, branch, foliage and total biomass than trees of equal stem diameter at 1.3 m above ground in NVC. The
difference in component biomass between treatments was in the order: branch > foliage > stem. Trees in the VC regime did not
differ in macronutrient concentration in stem, branch and foliage except for branch N which was greater in NVC than in VC.
Differences in tree macronutrient stores between VC and NVC ranged from 2.2 times for Mg to 2.6 times for N and K. The relationship
between stem diameter and leaf area was linear in both VC treatments. The relationship between stem diameter and foliage biomass
was curvilinear for both VC treatments. Results of this study support the need for separated allometric equations to estimate
biomass for young Douglas-fir growing in areas with and without VC. 相似文献

Metacarpal or metatarsal exostoses were diagnosed in 112 horses used for sport purposes between January 1976 to December 1987. Fourteen of these patients were treated surgically by subperiosteal removal of the exostosis. All animals which could be followed up had returned to their original use. The average time of use after discharge from the clinic was 38.4 months. Surgery was successful in completely removing the exostoses in 58.3% of these horses. Organic farming is considered an effective means of reducing nitrogen losses compared with more intensive conventional farming systems. However, under certain conditions, organic farming may also be susceptible to large nitrogen (N) losses. This is especially the case for organic dairy farms on sandy soils that use grazed grass–clover in rotation with cereals. A study was conducted on two commercial organic farms on sand and loamy sand soils in Denmark. On each farm, a 3‐year‐old grass–clover field was selected. Half of the field was ploughed the first year and the other half was ploughed the following year. Spring barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) was sown after ploughing in spring. Measurements showed moderate N leaching during the pasture period (9–64 kg N ha?1 year?1) but large amounts of leaching in the first (63–216 kg N ha?1) and second (61–235 kg N ha?1) year after ploughing. There was a small yield response to manure application on the sandy soil in both the first and second year after ploughing. To investigate the underlying processes affecting the residual effects of pasture and N leaching, the dynamic whole farm model farm assessment tool (FASSET) was used to simulate the treatments on both farms. The simulations agreed with the observed barley N‐uptake. However, for the sandy soil, the simulation of nitrate leaching and mineral nitrogen in the soil deviated considerably from the measurements. Three scenarios with changes in model parameters were constructed to investigate this discrepancy. These scenarios suggested that the organic matter turnover model should include an intermediate pool with a half‐life of about 2–3 years.
