  1. Today, aquatic biodiversity suffers from many pressures linked to human activities, including climate change, which particularly affects alpine areas. Many alpine freshwater species have shifted their geographical distribution to colder areas, but a reduced availability of suitable habitats is also forecasted. New artificial water bodies could provide habitat enhancement opportunities, including small mountain reservoirs built to overcome a lack of snow during winter.
  2. To investigate the role of reservoirs as a habitat for freshwater invertebrates, a case study was conducted on eight reservoirs in the Swiss Alps. The study aimed to compare the water quality and freshwater biodiversity of the reservoirs with those of 39 natural and newly excavated ponds. Data were collected on physico‐chemistry, freshwater habitat structure, and aquatic insects (dragonflies and aquatic beetles).
  3. The study showed that the mountain reservoirs investigated did not differ from natural ponds in terms of surface area, conductivity, and trophic level. Similarly to natural ponds, reservoirs showed signs of impairment owing to surface run‐off carrying pollutants linked to ski tourism. They presented a low diversity of mesohabitats, and in particular lacked vegetation. Compared with natural ponds, the species richness in reservoirs was lower for dragonflies but not for beetles. At the regional scale, the community from the reservoirs was a subset of the natural ponds community, supporting 38% of the regional species richness for these two insect groups.
  4. The results suggest that mountain reservoirs are likely to be important for biodiversity in alpine areas, both as habitats and as stepping stones for species shifting their geographical range. These water bodies can be enhanced further by some nature‐friendly measures to maximize benefits for biodiversity, including margin revegetation or the creation of adjacent ponds. Ecological engineering needs to be innovative and promote freshwater biodiversity in artificial reservoirs.

This study aimed to determine the relationships between N'Dama cows body condition score (BCS) and (i) calf growth and the milk collected; and (ii) the probabilities of pregnancy and juvenile mortality. Animals from 10 herds ranging from 20 to 210 animals in herd size were followed monthly in an extensive range management system in Southern Senegal between 1993 and 1998. For daily weight gains and milk collected, linear mixed-effects models were fitted between calving and 6 months postpartum. Cow lactation was included as random effect, with an unstructured variance-covariance matrix. Calving season, parity, herd size, and calving BCS were the fixed effects. For the probabilities of pregnancy and juvenile mortality, survival models for grouped data were fitted on a monthly scale. The model selection was based on the Akaike information criteria. In large herds, calving BCS had little effect on milk production. In small herds, calves born to cows scoring ≥2.5 points at calving grew quicker and their dam were more milked. The relative difference in milk production between thin and fat cows averaged 23%. The relative gain was higher in the cool dry season than in the other seasons, and for primiparous than for multiparous cows. Except during the hot dry season, the probability of pregnancy was twice as high for cows scoring ≥2.5 points the two previous months than for other cows. The BCS had no effect on calf survival until 1 year of age in large herds. In small herds, calves born to thin cows at calving showed a survival at 1 year more than five points lower than calves born to fatter cows. The threshold of 2.5 points on a five-point scale is pertinent to describe the production performance of N'Dama cows in such a breeding context.  相似文献

The present study was designed to obtain basic endocrine information on GTH I and GTH II in previtellogenic and prespermatogenic coho salmon (immature). Levels of GTH II in pituitary extracts were 6.5 ± 2.0 and 6.7 ± 2.0 pg/μg pituitary protein in male and female fish, respectively. In contrast, the pituitary content of GTH I was approximately 100-fold higher than GTH II (1.302 ± .22 and 1.173 ± .21 ng/μg pituitary protein in male and female fish, respectively). Plasma levels of GTH II in immature salmon were not detectable by RIA whereas plasma GTH I levels were approximately 0.62 ± 0.12 and 0.78 ± 0.13 ng/ml in male and female fish, respectively. Highly purified coho salmon GTH I and GTH II stimulated testicular testosterone production and ovarian estradiol productionin vitro in a similar manner, though GTH II appeared more potent than GTH I. Therefore, it appears that although the salmon pituitary contains predominantly GTH I prior to puberty, the gonad can respond to both GTH I and GTH II.  相似文献

We assessed the effects of different feeding regimes on reproductive traits in coho salmon, Oncorhynchus kisutch. Ration treatments subjected fish to different energy levels during oocyte proliferation (Year 1) and oocyte maturation (Year 2). Fish from 10 full‐sibling families were fed at either the recommended feeding rate or double the recommended ration during the first year. At the beginning of the second year, each ration group was split again into recommended and double ration tanks for a total of four dietary treatments. At the end of the second year, 365 females from the four treatment groups were spawned and body weight, egg weight, and egg number were measured. Overall, the fish fed the double ration during both years grew the fastest (50.1% larger than controls), had the highest egg number (46.3% larger), and had the largest eggs (9.6% larger), although similar increases were observed feeding at the double ration level during the second year alone. Ration modification produced significant changes in some reproductive traits, especially egg number, while family effects had a greater influence on relative fecundity (eggs/g female body weight) and egg weight. In fact, family effects were significant for all of the traits. Results indicate that reproductive traits can be manipulated through changes in ration and/or via genetic selection, either directly or indirectly.  相似文献

This paper considers gender and the conjunction of global and local processes in three different social and spatial configurations; a Philippines locality, a transnational view embracing the Philippines and somewhere else, and globally. Gendered household livelihoods and contradictions in gender ideologies reveal the privileging of men’s work and political potential over women’s. Exporting women’s labour is the most economically viable household strategy; a pattern which creates new transnational social fields embracing the many national contexts where Filipino women work overseas. The conclusion eschews a binary approach to women’s resistance and highlights the paradoxical yet potentially radical political significance of inter/national dependency upon Filipino women’s domestic labour.  相似文献

At the Sulphur Bay Wildlife area on Lake Rotorua, shore and water birds are exposed to natural H2S at concentrations of 125 to 3900 ppbV from continuous shore and lake sources. Nevertheless, 62 bird species, 45 native, have been recorded there. Regular residents include Red-Billed Gull, Dabchick Mallard Duck, Black Swan and Caspian Tern. Some, the Red Billed Gull and Little Black Shag, have initiated colonization within the past half-century. We suggest that exposure to H2S at the levels reported here may be less of a biohazard than previously supposed.  相似文献

Samples of six common plant species collected in the old mining areas near Prince George, British Columbia (Canada) and Mount Amiata, Tuscany (Italy) show remarkable similarities in the variation of plant/soil Hg concentration ratio with soil Hg content irrespective of species or other biological differences. In contrast, plants sampled in the geothermally active areas of New Zealand, Hawaii and around Mount St. Helens exhibit more individuality in the concentration ratio to soil Hg relationship, but the relationships are distinctly different from the mine site specimens. This distinction is particularly evident when the same species of Equisetum and Plantago taken from these two different areas are compared. These and other data support the hypothesis that specific local environmental factors strongly influence the accumulation of Hg in plants even when the immediate soil concentrations are the same. Our findings show that some plants contain concentrations of total Hg as high as 5500 to 14000 μg kg?1 (dw).  相似文献

Six blastomere morphology parameters indicative of cell development abnormalities, egg diameter, dry weight, total lipid, lipid classes and fatty acids were determined for egg batches collected daily from three Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) broodstock groups over the course of one spawning season. Egg batches were incubated to hatch and each morphological and biochemical parameter was tested as a predictor of hatching success. Five of the six blastomere morphology parameters were significantly positively correlated with each other. Correlation coefficients among several fatty acid parameters were also significant but correlation coefficients among the various lipid classes were mostly not significant. No significant correlations were found between blastomere morphology and lipid class or fatty acid parameters. Egg dry weight was negatively correlated with cell clarity, %docosahexanoic acid (DHA), DHA:eicosapentaenoic acid, and Σ polyunsaturated fatty acids. Fertilization success was not significantly correlated with any of the morphology or biochemistry parameters. Within‐population variability in several morphological and fatty acid parameters was related to elapsed time since onset of first spawning. However, the occurrence of such relationships with elapsed time was highly variable and inconsistent among the three broodstocks, typically being significant for only one or two broodstocks but not all three. Mean hatching success rates were high (>75%) in all three broodstocks but hatching success was not significantly related to any of the morphological or biochemical parameters nor to elapsed time from onset of first spawning. The implications of these results are discussed in terms of the utility of the various morphology and biochemistry parameters as measures of egg quality in marine finfish hatcheries.  相似文献

This study aimed to investigate both the pharmacokinetic behavior and tolerance of methotrexate (MTX) in horses to design a specific dosing regimen as a new immunomodulatory drug for long-term treatment. To determine the primary plasma pharmacokinetic variables after single intravenous, subcutaneous or oral administration, six horses were administered 0.3 mg/kg MTX in a crossover design study. After a 10-week washout, MTX was administered subcutaneously to three of the six previously treated horses at a dose of 0.3 mg/kg once per week for 3 months. In both studies, MTX and metabolite concentrations were measured using LC-MS/MS. The absolute bioavailability of MTX was 73% following subcutaneous administration but less than 1% following oral administration. The plasma clearance was 1.54 ml min−1 kg−1 (extraction ratio = 2%). After 24 hr, plasma concentrations were below the LOQ. No adverse effects were noted except for a moderate reversible elevation in liver enzymes (GLDH). With regards to the main metabolites of MTX, very low concentrations of 7-hydroxy-MTX were found, whereas polyglutamated forms (mainly short chains) were found in red blood cells. A subcutaneous dose of 0.2 mg kg−1 week−1 may be safe and relevant in horses, although this has yet to be clinically confirmed.  相似文献
