In order to assess age-related changes in the immune status of Labrador retriever dogs, leukocyte phenotypes, lymphocyte proliferative capacity, and serum antibody levels were measured in four cohorts of dogs, ranging from 2 to 10 years of age. Absolute numbers of white blood cells, lymphocytes, monocytes, granulocytes, and CD3+, CD4+, CD8+ and CD21+ lymphocytes significantly decreased with increasing age. Relative percentages of lymphocytes and CD4 cells were significantly decreased, and relative percentages of granulocytes and CD8 cells significantly increased, with age. The CD4:CD8 ratio showed a significant age-related decrease. Proliferative responses of T-cells to mitogens in whole-blood cultures either increased (Concanavalin A) or remained the same (phytohemagglutinin) with age when data was normalised to allow for differences in responding cell number. Similarly, normalised data of proliferative response to anti-CD3 stimulation together with phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate showed an age-related increase. Serum levels of total IgA significantly increased with age whereas total IgG levels remained unchanged. These observations illustrate a significant change to a number of immune parameters with age. However, further work is required to determine whether the differences reported here are sufficient to cause overt or functional immune senescence in Labrador retriever dogs. 相似文献

Two major changes in the epidemiology of salmonellosis occurred in the second half of the 20th century: the emergence of food-borne human infections caused by S. Enteritidis and by multiple-antibiotic resistant strains of Salmonella. This review updates information on the S. Enteritidis pandemic and focuses on the emergence of Salmonella, carrying the SGI1 antibiotic resistance gene cluster, resistant to extended-spectrum cephalosporins, or resistant to fluoroquinolones. The factors responsible for the emergence of these Salmonella strains could be either of human origin or related to bacterial genome evolution. However, our increasing understanding of the molecular fluidity of the genome shows that any attempt to counteract bacteria results in further bacterial evolution or adaptation of other bacteria to take place in the new free ecological niche. In these conditions, we can ask who is faster: humans who want to eliminate bacterial pathogens or bacteria that continuously evolve to gain new niches. 相似文献

Accurate antimicrobial drug use data are needed to enlighten discussions regarding the impact of antimicrobial drug use in agriculture. The primary objective of this study was to investigate the perceived accuracy and clarity of different methods for reporting antimicrobial drug use information collected regarding beef feedlots. Producers, veterinarians, industry representatives, public health officials, and other knowledgeable beef industry leaders were invited to complete a web-based survey. A total of 156 participants in 33 US states, 4 Canadian provinces, and 8 other countries completed the survey. No single metric was considered universally optimal for all use circumstances or for all audiences. To effectively communicate antimicrobial drug use data, evaluation of the target audience is critical to presenting the information. Bloodpressure measurements are of interest for todays veterinary practice. It can be used for screening of incoming patients, the emergency case, the intensive care patient and sedated animal. Furthermore, like in human medicine, blood pressure can be influenced by several diseases. The most reliable method of arterial blood pressure measurement is the direct or invasive method. Only the non-invasive methods doppler and oscillometric methods are used in veterinary medicine. The article describes the method of measurement, and provides a review of the literature. The oscillometric method especially in dogs. Both methods measure a lower bloodpressure if compared with an invasive method. The difference in bloodpressure is for the oscillometric method in cats greater then in dogs and appears to increase at higher blood pressures. Keeping these facts in focus, and if one is able to work in a quiet environment, repeat the measurements and maintain a critical attitude, blood pressure measurements can be performed in veterinary practice. 相似文献

Infrared thermography (IRT) is a passive, remote, and noninvasive method of measuring surface temperatures. Select surface locations, such as the eye, could indicate body temperature. To investigate whether thermographic eye temperatures were associated with body temperatures and could be used to detect febrile ponies, we measured IRT eye temperatures, rectal temperatures, and implanted thermal microchip temperatures from 24 male ponies daily for 3 consecutive days. Information regarding distance of the pony from the IRT device, presence of direct sunlight during the measurement period, and ambient temperature were also collected. A multivariate linear regression analysis indicated that 60.41% of the variance in IRT was accounted for by rectal temperature, sunlight, and distance between the camera and the pony, with rectal temperature being the major contributor to variance (46.23%). Using a rectal temperature of >38.6°C (101.5°F) as the indicator of febrile status, sensitivity and specificity of the IRT device used to detect the febrile ponies were found to be 74.6% and 92.3%, respectively, when using the maximum IRT eye temperature per pony per day. In conclusion, IRT eye temperature could be a preliminary screening tool to determine whether a more time-consuming, labor-intensive, and invasive method (e.g., rectal temperature) is warranted for fever validation. 相似文献

Equine skeletal muscle was histologically and histochemically analyzed in orderto measure fiber composition. Well-sampled open muscle biopsies were obtained from the semitendinosus muscle in select yearling Thoroughbreds. Each biopsy was sectioned and stained for the Harris Hematoxylin and Eosin and the modified Gomori Trichrome in order to demonstrate the basic muscle fiber morphology delineating intra and extracellular elements. A thirdstain, CA++ activated myosin Adenosine Triphosphatase at pH 9.4 was used to differentiate between specific types on the basis of enzyme activities. Subsequent differentiation of Type I slow twitch and Type II fast twitch muscle fibers was assessed on the basisof staining intensity. The high predominance of Type II fast twitch fibers ranged from 85.1 to 100 % with a mean of 90.5 %. Racing records, as two- and three-year-olds, were monitored in order to qualitatively compare histochemical results with performance achievements. While caution must be exercised, results of this investigation suggested that it may be possible, at an early age to partially predict the potential of each horse to adapt to training and to compete successfully in races of varying distances. 相似文献
