AIM: To investigate the presence of surface-active phospholipid (SAPL, or surfactant) in equine tendon and tendon sheath fluid.

METHODS: The left front flexor tendon and sheath were removed from five Thoroughbred horses. Phospholipid was extracted from tendon sheath fluid using Folch reagent and quantifi ed using spectroscopy. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) was used to observe the tendon surfaces.

RESULTS: The presence of phospholipid (90.6 (SD 4.3) μg/ml) in tendon sheath fluid, plus the appearance of oligolamellar layers and lamellar bodies on the tendon surface were indicative of SAPL.

CONCLUSIONS: Evidence of SAPL was found in equine tendon, and may have a similar lubricating function as reported for synovial joints.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE: These findings may have important implications for normal tendon function and possible therapeutic adjuncts for tendon and tendon sheath injuries.  相似文献

Abstract

Eight grazing systems were compared on irrigated Cynodon aethiopicus pastures which received 650 kg N, 36 kg P and 200 kg dolomitic limestone/ha, annually. There were either one, two, three, six or 18 paddocks in the systems, the single paddock system being continuously grazed. The others were rotational systems with various periods of grazing and of resting.

Using the comparative slaughter technique carcass mass gains of crossbred Hereford/Afrikaner steers were calculated. Three‐year mean carcass mass gains over stocking rates from 12 to 18 steers/ha ranged from 872 to 997 kg/ha. None of the rotational systems were better than continuous grazing.

Estimates of amounts of herbage available for grazing in each system showed that there was least in the continuous grazed and most in the multi‐paddock systems where there were long periods of rest between successive grazing.  相似文献

The objectives of the present investigations are to see the effects of biomass power plant effluent on the carbohydrates, aminoacids, nitrite and nitrite enzyme activitiesand proline of Arachis hypogaea L. var TCGS 320 under controlled pot culture methods. Plants were cultivated with 25, 50, 75 and 100% of the effluent and a control without the effluent. The treatment of the crop with 25% of the effluent has shown stimulatory effect on all the biochemical parameters studied. Carbohydrates, starch, aminoacids, protein, nitrate and nitrite reductase enzymatic activities have increased in 10, 15, 20 DAS (days after sowing). In 25 and 30 DAS all biochemical parameters have decreased, due to environmental factors (rainfall, temperature, humidity, etc.). The present investigation clearly indicated that the biomass power plant effluent has stimulatory effect on all the biochemical contents at lower concentration, and at higher concentration they have deleterious effects.  相似文献

Blackleg disease, caused by the hemibiotrophic fungal pathogen Leptosphaeria maculans, is one of the most devastating disease of Brassica species worldwide. To date, a total of 20 race-specific blackleg resistance (R) genes have been reported and all of those loci are located in either the A or B genomes of various Brassica species. The B. oleracea genome (CC) shares a high ancestral synteny with the A genome of B. rapa, suggesting the presence of qualitative (race specific) resistance to blackleg disease is also possible in B. oleracea germplasm. In the present study the C genome of Korean B. oleracea germplasm was screened for the presence of blackleg R genes. Thirty-two inbred cabbage lines with unknown resistance profiles, along with five control B. napus lines with well-characterised race-specific R genes, were assessed for cotyledon resistance against two L. maculans isolates with known and highly-contrasting avirulence gene (Avr) profiles. Two cabbage accessions were identified which produced a strong resistance when challenged with either isolate, demonstrating the presence of effective blackleg R genes in the cabbage C genome. Additionally, 16 microsatellite markers linked to seven different R genes of the B. napus A genome were converted into markers for their homologous regions on the B. oleracea C genome. These markers were used to screen all B. oleracea lines to assess if the novel C genome R genes were syntenous to known R gene-homologous regions of the A genome. The resistant cabbage lines offer C genome R genes for the protection of B. oleracea varieties against incursion of blackleg disease, as well as novel additional resistance sources for introgression into B. napus and B. carinata breeding material.  相似文献
