The characterization of amaranth seeds (Amaranthus spp.) was developed for Amaranthus hypochondriacus, Amaranthus cruentus, and Amaranthus dubius. The elemental concentrations were determined by inductively coupled plasma optic atomic spectroscopy. Pattern recognition methods were used for the characterization of seed samples: nonsupervised methods included principal components analysis and cluster analysis; supervised methods were linear discriminant analysis and partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA). Informed are the concentrations of the following elements: Ag, Al, Ba, Ca, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, K, La, Li, Mg, Mn, Mo, Na, Ni, P, S, Sr, V, Zn, and Zr. The lowest mineral content was found in A. hypochondriacus, and the highest one was found in A. dubius. For the classification, selected variables for all multivariate methods were Ba, Cr, Li, Mn, Ni, S, and Sr. Nonsupervised methods allowed us to distinguish between the three species of amaranth; however, PLS-DA supervised methods showed the best prediction ability.  相似文献

The embryos of a marine abalone, Haliotis diversicolor supertexta, were exposed to a typical environmental estrogen, 17??-ethynylestradiol (EE2), for 96?h, to examine the acute toxicity of EE2 to the embryogenesis of the abalone. A marine diatom, Navicula incerta, was used in the test media as settlement substrate and food for the abalone larvae. During the embryo culture, more than 30?% of EE2 could be removed from the test media by the diatom, mainly via biodegradation, leading to a decrease of water-borne exposure dose. Further, the exposure concentrations of EE2 around the living microenvironment of the abalone larvae could be magnified 350?C468 times after the larvae settled on the diatom, as indicated by the bioconcentration factors of EE2 in the diatom. Increased bioaccumulation of EE2 in the diatom caused greater inhibition on the metamorphosis of the abalone larvae by enhancing the uptake of EE2 in the larvae via dietary exposure, while declined water-borne exposure dose did not affect the embryonic toxicity of EE2 and its uptake in the abalone larvae. The 96-h median effective concentration of EE2 to the metamorphosis of the abalone larvae was 10.01???g?L?1, when the exposure doses in both the test media and the diatom were controlled stable. The 96-h hazard concentration for 5?% of the species was 1.20???g?L?1, which was still higher than but close to the reported upper contamination level of EE2 and could be employed as the safety threshold for the metamorphosis of the abalone embryos.  相似文献

Chilli peppers have been recognized as an excellent source of antioxidants as they are rich in bioactive phytochemicals such as carotenoids which are known to exert various beneficial effects in vivo. Absorption is an important factor in the determination of the potential biological effects of carotenoids. The bioaccessibility of a food constituent such as a carotenoid represents its potential to be absorbed in humans. There is very limited information in the literature regarding the content and bioaccessibility of carotenoids from dried peppers. Therefore, the objectives of the present study were: first, to determine the carotenoid content of 20 varieties of red, orange or yellow coloured sun-dried chilli peppers belonging to either of four Capsicum species (annuum, baccatum, chinense and chacoense); and second, to quantify the carotenoid micellarization (bioaccessibility) following an in vitro digestion procedure. Red peppers had a higher carotenoid content and bioaccessibility than either the orange peppers or yellow pepper. Xanthophylls showed greater bioaccessibility than carotenes. Our findings confirm that dried chilli peppers are a good source of carotenoids.  相似文献

The use of industrial-type linear accelerators may be an alternative treatment for controlling sprouts in potatoes during long-term storage. The technical aspect of treatment has been described and may include largescale treatment of bulk potatoes as they are moving along a system of conveyors either to or from storage. The objective of the study was to evaluate the use of a linear accelerator for long-term sprout control under commercial storage conditions and the effects on tuber quality. An 18-MeV linear accelerator was used to provide sprout-inhibiting irradiation to various lots of ‘Russet Burbank’ potatoes. Successful sprout suppression was achieved with doses of 40 to 50 Gy (0 g sprout weight after 9 months of storage at 7.2 C) while higher doses caused undesirable increases in reducing sugars in the tubers. Glucose concentrations of treated tubers (0.25% fresh tuber weight) were higher after treatment than the untreated controls (0.08%), but returned to control levels after 2 to 6 months in storage. Glucose concentrations in treated tubers were significantly reduced with storage management for reconditioning by increasing the storage temperature for one month (from 7.2 C to 14.4 C) resulting in glucose concentrations near control concentrations. By increasing the dose-rate from the accelerator, recovery of tuber glucose concentration due to radiation treatments was significantly faster than when the dose was given more slowly. Potato tubers irradiated with high rates (100 Gy) of high-energy electrons exhibited an increase in soft rot and dry rot incidence in storage. Disease development in potatoes treated with sprout inhibiting doses of radiation (50 Gy) increased in lots with a high rot potential. Treated lots with low rot potential were successfully stored for 8 months or more without an increase in rot potential or shrinkage. Selection of lots for irradiation treatment should include some preliminary evaluation for development of disease in long-term storage.  相似文献

Occurrence and distribution of three typical endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), nonylphenol mixture (NPs), bisphenol A (BPA), and 17α-ethynilestradiol (EE2), were investigated in the seawater, suspended solid, and sediment around the coastline of Shenzhen city. Field surveys were conducted in both dry season and rainy season to access the influence of rainfall and basic water quality parameters on the distribution of target EDCs. In the seawater, NPs, BPA, and EE2 ranged from 31 to 1,777 ng/l, from 11 to 777 ng/l, and from 10 to 269 ng/l, respectively. In the suspended solid, NPs, BPA, and EE2 were in the range from 3 to 289 ng/l, from 1 to 75 ng/l, and from 1 to 29 ng/l, respectively. In the sediment, NPs, BPA, and EE2 varied from 9 to 355 ng/g dry weight (dw), from 3 to 156 ng/g dw, and from 7 to 144 ng/g dw, respectively. With the increasing rainfall, the concentrations of target EDCs decreased in seawater and sediment and increased in suspended solid at all the sampling locations. Among the six measured basic water quality parameters, the volatile suspended solid value was positively related with the partition property of target EDCs between suspended solid and seawater. Based on the results of principal component analysis, dissolved organic carbon, total nitrogen, and total phosphorous had close relationships with the distribution of target EDCs in the seawater. Temperature and dissolved oxygen had little relationship with the distribution of target EDCs in the coastal area.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine the disposition of a bolus of meloxicam (administered IV) in horses and donkeys (Equus asinus) and compare the relative pharmacokinetic variables between the species. ANIMALS: 5 clinically normal horses and 5 clinically normal donkeys. PROCEDURES: Blood samples were collected before and after IV administration of a bolus of meloxicam (0.6 mg/kg). Serum meloxicam concentrations were determined in triplicate via high-performance liquid chromatography. The serum concentration-time curve for each horse and donkey was analyzed separately to estimate standard noncompartmental pharmacokinetic variables. RESULTS: In horses and donkeys, mean +/- SD area under the curve was 18.8 +/- 7.31 microg/mL/h and 4.6 +/- 2.55 microg/mL/h, respectively; mean residence time (MRT) was 9.6 +/- 9.24 hours and 0.6 +/- 0.36 hours, respectively. Total body clearance (CL(T)) was 34.7 +/- 9.21 mL/kg/h in horses and 187.9 +/- 147.26 mL/kg/h in donkeys. Volume of distribution at steady state (VD(SS)) was 270 +/- 160.5 mL/kg in horses and 93.2 +/- 33.74 mL/kg in donkeys. All values, except VD(SS), were significantly different between donkeys and horses. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The small VD(SS) of meloxicam in horses and donkeys (attributed to high protein binding) was similar to values determined for other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Compared with other species, horses had a much shorter MRT and greater CL(T) for meloxicam, indicating a rapid elimination of the drug from plasma; the even shorter MRT and greater CL(T) of meloxicam in donkeys, compared with horses, may make the use of the drug in this species impractical.  相似文献

Structural and functional properties of two amaranth protein isolates as a function of pH were studied. Isolates, A9 and A11, were obtained by alkaline extraction at pH 9 and 11, respectively. Gel filtration chromatograms of A9 and A11 showed similar profiles. The A11 isolate contained mainly albumins and globulins, and a small proportion of globulin‐P aggregates, suggesting the presence of species with a higher degree of denaturation compared to A9. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) showed that A9 was characterized by two thermal transitions (65.8 and 98°C); A11 exhibited only a small endotherm (66.6°C) and a second, less defined one. DSC analysis of A9 at pH 2–4 did not show endotherms, but at pH 5, some protein structures were observed. A11 showed a greater degree of denaturation. FPLC results showed that the proteins in A9 are more folded and their conformation is closer to the native state than those in A11, which are more unfolded due to pH‐mediated denaturation, mainly in acid media. The surface hydrophobicity of the isolates in acid media was lower than in alkaline media. The fluorescence emission spectra of the isolates showed differences in acidic pH conditions. As expected, the highest solubility was at alkaline pH. The water‐holding capacity was similar for both isolates. The water‐imbibing capacity and speed of foaming was higher for A11 than for A9. In summary, intense pH treatment of amaranth isolates generated partial or total protein denaturation and differences in the functional properties.  相似文献

At least one-third of the threatened and endangered species of the United States live in wetlands. Southern Appalachian bogs and fens, in particular, support a wealth of rare and unique life forms, many of which are found in no other habitat type. In North Carolina alone, nonalluvial mountain wetlands provide habitat for nearly 90 species of plants and animals that are considered rare, threatened, or endangered by the North Carolina Plant Conservation Program, the North Carolina Natural Heritage Program, the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission, or the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. These species include the bog turtle, mountain sweet pitcher plant, green pitcher plant, swamp pink, bunched arrowhead, and Gray's lily, all of which are either on the federal list of endangered and threatened species or under consideration for that list. Mountain wetland habitats for these species are being destroyed and degraded at an accelerating rate for highway construction and expansion and residential and recreational development, as well as for industrial and agricultural uses.  相似文献

Most gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) have activating mutations in the KIT receptor tyrosine kinase, and most patients with GISTs respond well to Gleevec, which inhibits KIT kinase activity. Here we show that approximately 35% (14 of 40) of GISTs lacking KIT mutations have intragenic activation mutations in the related receptor tyrosine kinase, platelet-derived growth factor receptor alpha (PDGFRA). Tumors expressing KIT or PDGFRA oncoproteins were indistinguishable with respect to activation of downstream signaling intermediates and cytogenetic changes associated with tumor progression. Thus, KIT and PDGFRA mutations appear to be alternative and mutually exclusive oncogenic mechanisms in GISTs.  相似文献
