The heart is considered the powerhouse of the cardiovascular system. Heart and skeletal muscle inflammation (HSMI), cardiomyopathy syndrome (CMS) and pancreas disease (PD) are cardiac diseases of marine farmed Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) which commonly affect the heart in addition to the skeletal muscle, liver and pancreas. The main findings of these diseases are necrosis and inflammatory cells infiltrates affecting different regions of the heart. In order to better characterize the cardiac pathology, study of the inflammatory cell characteristics and cell cycle protein expression was undertaken by immunohistochemistry. Immunohistochemistry was performed on paraffin embedded hearts from confirmed diseased cases applying specific antibodies. The inflammatory cells were predominantly CD3+ T lymphocytes. The PD diseased hearts exhibited moderate hypoxia inducible factor-1α (HIF1α) immuno-reaction that suggested tissue hypoxia while recombinant tumor necrosis factor-α (rTNFα) antibody identified putative macrophages and eosinophilic granulocytes (EGCs) in addition to endocardial cells around lesions. There were strong to low levels of major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class II immunostaining in the diseased hearts associated with macrophage-like and lymphocyte-like cells. The diseased hearts expressed strong to low levels of apoptotic cells identified by caspase 3 and terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase nick-end labeling (TUNEL) staining. The strong signals for proliferative cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) and TUNEL, and moderate levels of caspase 3 immuno-reactivity suggested a high cell turnover where DNA damage/repair might be occurring in the diseased hearts. Interestingly, the apparently similar cardiac diseases exhibited differences in the immunopathological responses in Atlantic salmon.  相似文献

This study investigated the effect of credit constraints and credit unconstraints on the technical efficiency of hybrid maize growers in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province(KPK) of Pakistan. The primary data were collected by a direct elicitation method from 510 maize growers of KPK Province. Stochastic frontier model techniques were used for technical efficiency analyses. The results revealed that the mean technical efficiency difference between the two groups was 10.2%. The results of technical inefficiency effect modeling demonstrated that education of the household head, family size, number of married family members, off-farm income, farming experience, tractor drill, water irrigation through a lined course, certified seed, extension services, household saving variables, and a credit size variable had positive effects on technical efficiency for both credit constrained farmers(CCFs) and credit unconstrained farmers(UCCFs). In addition, age of household head and fragmented land values had negative effects on technical efficiency for both groups. However, the interest rate had positive and negative impacts on the technical efficiency of CCFs and UCCFs, respectively. Our results have significant implications for policies related to land use, interest rate, and banking sector expansion in the rural areas of Pakistan.  相似文献

Field populations of adult whiteflies, Bemisia tabaci, from Pakistan were monitored from 1992 to 2007 for their susceptibility to seven organophosphate and three carbamate insecticides using a leaf-dip method. Malathion, quinalphos and chlorpyrifos generally exhibited no or a very low level of resistance in B. tabaci over a 16-year monitoring period. Resistance to profenofos, triazophos, parathion-methyl and ethion was usually low to high up to 1995, and then it dropped to very low levels during 1996–2004. Resistance levels again picked up from low to moderate levels for triazophos during 2005–2007, for parathion-methyl during 2003–2007, and for ethion in 2006. Among carbamates, thiodicarb resistance was high during 1994–1996, which dropped to moderate levels in 1997 and 1998 and to very low levels during 1999–2001, but again increased from low to high levels during 2002–2007. Methomyl resistance was moderate in 1994 and 1995, which dropped to very low levels during 1996–2002, and then increased to low levels during 2003–2007. Butocarboxim resistance remained very low during 1994–2003 and then increased from low to high levels during 2004–2007. The insecticides exhibiting no, very low or low resistance, and no cross-resistance among themselves can be exploited in devising an insecticide resistance management strategy to combat whitefly resistance in the field.  相似文献

The contamination of agriculture soils with heavy metals is increasing due to both natural and anthropogenic activities. This has resulted in lowering the yield and quality of agriculture crops. The aim of the present investigation was to determine the effect of Moringa oleifera (M. oleifera) aqueous leaf extract (MALE) on growth and Hg phytoextraction potential of maize cv. Azam under mercuric chloride (HgCl2)-induced stress. Soil was contaminated with different concentrations of HgCl2 (1 and 0.5?mg/kg). The MALE was applied at 5% and 2.5% as seed soaking prior to sowing of seeds in the pots. The M. oleifera leaf was a good source of macronutrients (Na, K, Ca and Mg) and micronutrients (Fe, Zn, Mn, Co and Ni) as well as natural phenolics. The induced HgCl2 stress significantly reduced seed germination (%), shoot dry weight, root dry weight, chlorophyll content and carotenoids content. The HgCl2-induced stress was associated with accumulation of phenolics and Hg in roots. The accumulation of Hg in roots was significantly correlated with phenolics content (r?=?.8007, p?=?.000). The exogenous application of MALE significantly ameliorated adverse effects of HgCl2 stress on maize plants. The accumulation of Hg in roots was significantly increased by MALE. It is inferred from findings of the present investigation that MALE served as bioregulator and can be applied to reduce adverse effects of HgCl2 on maize. Moreover, MALE can enhance the Hg phytoremediation potential of maize.  相似文献

The accumulation of total soluble and cell wall-bound phenolics and total soluble proteins in Zea mays plants exposed to drought stress and foliar spray of salicylic acid (SA) at 10?4?mol/L and 10?5?mol/L was investigated. Drought stress was imposed at the four-leaf stage for 10 days (30–35% field capacity). Dehydration of maize leaves was accompanied by the accumulation of both total soluble and cell wall-bound phenolics, reduction in leaf relative water content (LRWC), and shoot and root growth attributes. Foliar spraying of SA further augmented the content of total soluble and cell wall-bound phenolics and total soluble proteins content under drought stress. SA ameliorated the adverse effects of drought stress on LRWC, shoot fresh weight, shoot dry weight, root fresh weight, root dry weight, root length and root area. The accumulation of both soluble and cell wall-bound phenolics by foliar spray of SA may be a mechanism related to SA-induced drought stress tolerance in maize. It was concluded that foliar spraying of SA at 10?5?mol/L can be highly economical and effective for modifying the effects of drought stress on maize at the four-leaf stage.  相似文献

This experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of biochars, produced from maize straw at different temperatures (300, 400, and 500 °C), on growth of maize. Maximum cation exchange capacity (CEC) (106 cmolc kg?1) of biochar was observed at 400 °C. The pH, electrical conductivity (EC), and carbon content of biochars significantly increased with increasing temperature, and maximum pH (9.8), EC (3.0 dS m?1), and carbon content (607 g kg?1) were observed at 500 °C. Concentration of phosphorus (P), potassium (K), calcium (Ca), and magnesium (Mg) significantly increased with increasing temperature, while of nitrogen (N) decreased. Ammonium bicarbonate–diethylene triamine penta acetic acid (AB-DTPA)–extractable nutrients were decreased with increasing pyrolysis temperature. Shoot and root dry matter of maize increased significantly with application of biochar produced at 300 and 400 °C and decreased significantly at 500 °C. Maximum shoot and root dry matter of maize was obtained at biochar produced at 300 °C. Phosphorus and K concentration in shoots and roots increased with biochar, and it was significantly more with fertilizer application. In contrast to P, shoot and root K concentration increased significantly with increasing pyrolysis temperature. The results of this study indicated that application of biochar produced at low pyrolysis temperature may be a practical approach to improve crop growth.  相似文献

Natural materials and plants have a long history of medical applications due to their broad range of favorable biological functions including biocompatibility, anti-bacterial, anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Main objective of this study was to develop alginate-chitosan-hyaluronic acid (ACH) composite fibers with controlled drug release, and liquid retention properties for better moist wound healing. The dope comprising sodium alginate was extruded into calcium chloride (CaC12) coagulation bath. The developed calcium alginate fibers were then passed through a bath containing hydrolyzed chitosan and dip coated with hyaluronic acid for 24 hours. The resulting ACH composite fibers were then rinsed with deionized water and dried using acetone. These fibers were tested for tensile properties, % swelling, liquid absorption (g/g) and controlled drug release. The results concluded that ACH composite fibers can be produced by wet spinning and have adequate tensile properties, high % swelling, liquid absorption (g/g) and controlled release of hyaluronic acid for improved wound healing.  相似文献
