- 1. Carassius auratus, a primary freshwater fish with bisexual diploid and unisexual gynogenetic triploid lineages, is distributed widely in and around the Eurasian continent and is especially common in East Asia. East Asian C. auratus diverged genetically to form local endemic populations in different regions, and those distributed in the Ryukyu Archipelago form a local endemic population that can be regarded as an evolutionarily significant unit because of its high phylogenetic independence and evolutionary distinctiveness. Although the evolutionary uniqueness of this population should be conserved, its distribution area and population size are decreasing rapidly, and some island populations are currently considered endangered or already extinct.
- 2. To develop effective conservation measures to stop the current decline of Ryukyuan C. auratus, ecological data need to be collected. In this study, life history data for a C. auratus population distributed in the Hiji River system were collected by estimating age, growth, and spawning season.
- 3. The spawning season of C. auratus in the Hiji River extended from March to September, peaking during March–May. Females became sexually mature in their second year, but males reached maturity and were able to spawn as early as in the late spawning season of their year of hatching. Once having reached sexual maturity, males probably continuously stay ripe throughout their life.
- 4. Sagittal otoliths of C. auratus proved to be useful ageing structures because one annual increment is formed on the sagittal otolith before the spawning season in each year. The oldest fish observed were a 10‐year‐old female and an 11‐year‐old male. Females showed faster somatic growth and higher final standard length than males, and a sexual size dimorphism was observed.

Assessment of degradation and generation of humus in a coffee soil affected by weed cover by means of a stable carbon isotopic ratio 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1

We evaluated the effect of soil conservation by weeds on the degradation and generation of humic acids, fulvic acids, and water‐soluble non‐humic substances (WS‐NHS) in a red‐acid soil (Vertic Dystrudept) (Indonesia) from the changes in humus composition and stable carbon isotopic ratio (δ13C). Three plots, a weeded plot (T‐1; the common practice), a plot covered with Paspalum conjugatum Berg., a C4 plant (T‐2), and a plot in which native weeds were allowed to grow (T‐3), were prepared. An incubation experiment determined the δ13C values of the humus fractions generated from Paspalum in soil. Based on the increase in δ13C value, the proportion of total C that originated from Paspalum C after 4 years under coffee was 16 ± 4% in the T‐2 topsoil (0–10 cm). Humic and fulvic acids in the T‐1 topsoil decreased to 46 and 84%, respectively, whilst both increased or remained constant in the T‐2 and T‐3 soils. The WS‐NHS content varied little and was independent of land management. The preferential loss of the humic acids with a smaller degree of humification as assessed by their darkness in colour was shown in T‐1. The decrease in the degree of humification suggested the accumulation of the weed‐derived humic acids in T‐2 and T‐3. In the T‐2 topsoil, 36 ± 2%, 13 ± 3% and 15 ± 2% of C in the humic acids, fulvic acids and WS‐NHS, respectively, were estimated to be Paspalum‐derived after 4 years. The estimated initial C loss during the same period was 17 ± 3%, 14 ± 2% and 7 ± 2%, respectively, for those fractions, which suggests the fastest turnover rate for the humic acids and significant retardation of their degradation in soil colonized by weeds. 相似文献

In 2010, an H5N1 highly pathogenic avian influenza virus (HPAIV) was isolated from feces of apparently healthy ducks migrating southward in Hokkaido, the northernmost prefecture of Japan. The H5N1 HPAIVs were subsequently detected in domestic and wild birds at multiple sites corresponding to the flyway of the waterfowl having stopovers in the Japanese archipelago. The Hokkaido isolate was genetically nearly identical to H5N1 HPAIVs isolated from swans in the spring of 2009 and 2010 in Mongolia, but less pathogenic in experimentally infected ducks than the 2009 Mongolian isolate. These findings suggest that H5N1 HPAIVs with relatively mild pathogenicity might be selected and harbored in the waterfowl population during the 2009-2010 migration seasons. Our data provide "early warning" signals for preparedness against the unprecedented situation in which the waterfowl reservoirs serve as perpetual sources and disseminators of HPAIVs. 相似文献

Seroepidemiological evidence of avian H4, H5, and H9 influenza A virus transmission to pigs in southeastern China 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Pig serum samples collected in southeastern China were examined for antibodies to influenza A viruses. Since the hemagglutination inhibition (HI) test does not accurately detect antibodies to the hemagglutinins (HAs) of "avian" influenza viruses, we utilized the neutralization (NT) test to detect subtype-specific antibodies to the HA of avian viruses in pig sera. Neutralizing antibodies to H1, H3, H4, and H5 influenza viruses were detected in the serum samples collected in 1977-1982 and 1998, suggesting that pigs in China have been sporadically infected with avian H4 and H5 viruses in addition to swine and human H1 and H3 viruses. Antibodies to H9 virus, on the other hand, were found only in the sera collected in 1998, not in those collected in 1977-1982, correlating with the recent spread in poultry and subsequent isolation of H9N2 viruses from pigs and humans in 1998. The present results indicate that avian influenza viruses have been transmitted to pig populations in southeastern China. 相似文献
