The objective was to evaluate effects of feeding level of milk replacer on body growth, plasma metabolite and insulin concentrations, and allometric growth of visceral organs in suckling calves. Holstein bull calves (n = 8; 3–4 days of age) were fed either a low amount (average 0.63 kgDM/day, LM) or high amount (average 1.15 kgDM/day, HM) of high protein milk replacer until they were slaughtered at 6 weeks of age. Body weight (BW) at 4, 5, and 6 weeks of age, feed intake, average daily gain, and feed efficiency were higher in the HM than LM calves. The HM group had higher plasma glucose at 3 and 4 weeks of age and insulin levels after the age of 4 weeks compared with LM calves whereas no effect was detected on plasma nonesterified fatty acid or urea nitrogen concentrations. The HM calves had greater empty body weight (EBW), viscera‐free BW and most of the organs dissected than LM calves. Relative weights (% of EBW) of liver, spleen, kidneys, and internal fat were higher, whereas head and large intestine was lower in HM than LM calves. The results suggest that increased milk feeding levels would accelerate the growth of the body and specific organs. 相似文献

A dog with purulent vulval discharge was found to have many cysts containing purulent mucus in the uterine cervix. The uterine horns did not contain any pus. Histological examination revealed a cervical adenomyosis infiltrated by many neutrophils. After an ovariohysterectomy including the whole cervix, the dog recovered well. 相似文献

A novel PCR assay was developed in order to examine the prevalence of Haemobartonella felis (H. felis) in Japanese domestic cats and which was able to differentiate of the Ohio strain and the California strain of H. felis. Blood samples from a total of 21 cats suspected of having haemobartonellosis were examined employing a novel PCR assay and demonstrated positive results in 18 cats which was confirmed by cytological examination of blood smears. Four out of 18 positive cats (22%) were infected with the California strain, whilst the other 12 cats (67%) were infected with the Ohio strain and two animals (11%) were infected with both strains. As most of the cats with moderate to severe anemia were infected with the Ohio strain, it is suggested that the most prevalent strain of H. felis in Japanese domestic cats might be the Ohio strain. In the present study, it was thought that molecular detection and characterization of H. felis may provide valuable information regarding the severity and prognosis of this illness. 相似文献

The WS-Y isolate of Watermelon silver mottle virus (WSMoV) causes severe necrosis in Tetragonia expansa. To determine the RNA segment that induces symptoms, genome reassorants between WS-Y and an isolate causing mild mottle, WS-O, were generated. The origin of each segment in the reassortants was identified by RT-PCR and subsequent restriction enzyme analysis of the amplified fragments. Thirty genome reassortants were isolated from co-infected T. expansa plants. The reassortants with the S RNA segment of WS-Y caused severe necrosis, while those with the S RNA segment of WS-O caused a mild mottle; hence, the S RNA determined symptom expression. The incidence of reassortants was disproportional among genotypes. The most frequent genome reassortant possesses the L RNA of WS-Y, the M RNA of WS-O and the S RNA of WS-Y. A similar ratio of genotypes was found in isolates of local lesions on Chenopodium quinoa. These results strongly suggested that competition occurred independently between the individual RNA segments in a co-infected T. expansa plant, not between isolates. 相似文献

The major causes of deforestation and degradation of natural resources in the Belete-Gera Forest of Ethiopia are coffee production
activities and encroachment into forestland to expand farmland and pasture. Population growth, and the government’s land-reform
and re-settlement programs have caused local residents to lose harmony with the land. Forest management in this area hasn’t
yet been fully developed. The objectives of this study are to identify the extent of deforestation and natural resource degradation,
in preparation for a sound management plan. Encroachment of farmland and pasture into natural forest during the past four
years has been identified through interviews and aerial photo interpretation. The encroachment rate is 1.45% per year. Encroachment
occurred mostly on areas with gentle slopes adjacent to populated villages and along roads and footpaths. The extent and impact
of coffee production activities were examined through agency documents, forest survey data and vegetation survey. It is estimated
that up to 49% of the accessible natural forest is under the influence of coffee production activities, among which collecting
of naturally grown coffee beans has the least and the coffee plantations has the most impact on the natural forest. Coffee
plantations in natural forest have reduced the forest density and species diversity. Age structure of the trees is limited
to mature and old classes only, which eventually endangers their function as shade for coffee plantations.

Cooked spaghetti of various types (fresh, dried, frozen, luncheon, and long‐life spaghetti) was examined for moisture distribution by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Moisture content was calculated from spinspin relaxation time (T2) of water proton, based on the correlation between T2 and moisture content of pulverized durum semolina standard gel samples. Boiled samples of dried and frozen spaghetti had a distinct low moisture region at the center, which was not clearly observed in the other types of boiled spaghetti samples. In particular, the moisture content of boiled long‐life spaghetti was almost homogeneous. Texture of cooked spaghetti samples was evaluated using the force‐distance curve of a mechanical property test. For dried and frozen spaghetti, higher force was observed at the region corresponding to the low moisture core compared with the other types. The luncheon spaghetti and long‐life spaghetti showed a lower breaking force and a larger dip after the peak force representing soft and brittle texture caused by moisture homogeneity. These results indicated that MRI could be used for the quality evaluation of cooked spaghetti through imaging of the moisture distribution, which reflects the mechanical property. 相似文献

We report herein the presence of a lectin in the scleractinian coral Ctenactis (Fungia) echinata. The lectin bound preferentially to lactose, melibiose, and d-galactose. The purified lectin CecL was composed of several isolectins, and it was found to have a molecular mass of 67.4 kDa
via gel filtration. Glycopeptidase F-treated CecL showed a single band at 32.5 kDa. The mass/charge ratios of the reduced
CecL peaks were equivalent to half those of the native peaks. These results suggest that CecL is composed of two glycosylated
polypeptides linked by interchain disulfide bonds. In a biological activity test using a zooxanthellal culture (Dinoflagellate
Symbiodinium) clonally isolated from Fungia cf. fungites, CecL transformed the flagellated motile form of Symbiodinium into the nonmotile coccoid form, a form equivalent to the symbiotic stage. The activity of CecL on Symbiodinium cells was concentration dependent, and 100 μg/ml CecL arrested Symbiodinium cells in the coccoid form for 5 days. CecL also suppressed the growth of Symbiodinium cells, unlike the octocoral lectin derived from Sinularia lochmodes, which arrests Symbiodinium cells in the coccoid form but does not affect the growth of the coccoid. Serum alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) concentrations were measured before and after surgical removal of tumor masses in four dogs with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Localization of AFP was also examined immunohistochemically in tumor tissues. In three cases, the serum AFP concentration was 10 to 20 times higher than that of normal dogs. One to two months after surgery, the serum AFP concentration had decreased to normal range. AFP was localized in the tumor tissues in these three cases. One case, which had a low serum AFP, did not show AFP localization in tumor tissue. 相似文献

The antiradical function of sulfhydryl (SH) residue in dairy cattle plasma and the relationship of SH residue concentrations to other oxidative stress markers, ascorbic acid and thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (TBARS) in plasma were investigated. The concentration of reduced glutathione (GSH) in phosphate buffer solution (pH 7.6) and SH residues in dairy cattle plasma decreased significantly (P < 0.05) in vitro by the addition of peroxyradicals at 38°C, depending on incubation periods. The decrease of GSH concentration with the peroxyradical solution was partially protected by the addition of sodium ascorbate solution. A positive and significant correlation with SH residues and albumin concentration in the fresh plasma obtained from 15 dairy cattle was observed (P < 0.05). The SH residue concentration was not correlated with the TBARS concentration in plasma. The total ascorbic acid and SH residues concentration in the plasma correlated positively but not significantly (P < 0.10). These results suggested that SH residues in dairy cattle plasma play important part in the antiradical function. 相似文献
