Sorghum shoot fly, Atherigona soccata, is one of the important pests of postrainy season sorghums. Of the 90 sorghum genotypes evaluated for resistance to this pest, RHRB 12, ICSV 713, 25026, 93046 and 25027, IS 33844‐5, Giddi Maldandi and RVRT 3 exhibited resistance in postrainy season, while ICSB 463, Phule Anuradha, RHRB 19, Parbhani Moti, ICSV 705, PS 35805, IS 5480, 5622, 17726, 18368 and 34722, RVRT 1, ICSR 93031 and Dagidi Solapur showed resistance in rainy season, suggesting season‐specific expression of resistance to A. soccata. ICSB 461, ICSB 463, Phule Yasodha, M 35‐1, ICSV 700, 711, 25010, 25019 and 93089, IS 18662, Phule Vasudha, IS 18551 and 33844‐5 and Barsizoot had fewer deadhearts than plants with eggs across seasons, suggesting antibiosis as one of the resistance mechanism. Five genotypes exhibited resistance with high grain yield across seasons. Correlation, path and stepwise regression analyses indicated that leaf glossiness, seedling vigour, trichome density, oviposition and leaf sheath pigmentation were associated with the expression of resistance/susceptibility to shoot fly, and these can be used as marker traits to select and develop shoot fly‐resistant sorghums.  相似文献

The influence of tank wall color and up‐welling water flow on growth and survival of Eurasian perch larvae (Perca fluviatilis) was tested in an intensive culture system. Newly hatched larvae were fed Artemia nauplii, later combined with dry feed, and reared for 5 wk in either black tanks with up‐welling water flow or in gray tanks with or without up‐welling water flow. The perch larvae grew significantly faster in black tanks than in gray tanks regardless of water flow. Two weeks after hatching, a significantly higher mean weight was shown in larvae reared in black tanks compared to larvae reared in gray tanks with up‐welling water flow, and after 4 wk, the mean weight was significantly higher than in both of the other treatments. The difference in growth was further enhanced during the last week of the experiment, and the final mean weights were 51.1 ± 1.9 mg in black tanks with up‐welling water flow, 23.8 ± 2.1 mg in gray tanks with up‐welling water flow, and 23.7 ± 2.2 mg in gray tanks without up‐welling water flow. The cumulative mortality at the end of the experiment averaged 75% in all treatment groups. Taken together, the enhanced growth of Eurasian perch larvae in black tanks could be explained by high prey contrast and increased prey consumption. Up‐welling water flow had no impact on growth and survival of the perch larvae in gray tanks, indicating that the availability and consumption of the prey were independent of water movement.  相似文献

Berries are known to contain phenolic substances (i.e., flavonoids and phenolic acids), which comprise two large and heterogeneous groups of biologically active nonnutrients. This investigation evaluated the content and profile of the phenolic compounds present in six different berries found in Northern Europe. The latter included bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus), cowberry (Vaccinium vitis-idaea), cranberry (Vaccinium oxycoccus), strawberry (Fragaria ananassa), black currant (Ribes nigrum), and red currant (Ribes rubrum). The study was focused on two areas. The first involved the extraction and analysis of berries for total phenolic content and determination of their antioxidant activity. The total phenolic level of berries was correlated with their antioxidant activity. Second, the berry extracts were analyzed by capillary electrophoresis to determine the content and profile of selected bioactive compounds. The analytes of interest included trans-resveratrol, cinnamic acid, ferulic acid, p-coumaric acid, quercetin, and morin.  相似文献

The sustainability of slash-and-burn agriculture for sustainable crop production has been a subject of controversy. The objective of this study was to quantify the effect of slash and burn on soil quality. Two sites, Ibadan (7° 23′ N; 3° 51′ E) and Akure (7° 17′ N; 5° 14′ E), within the tropical rainforest of Nigeria were selected for the study. Burnt and unburnt soils were cropped with maize, melon, and cowpea (in sole and intercrops). Soil and earthworm cast samples were collected and analyzed for physical, chemical, and biological indicators. Integration into soil processes and quality indices involved the transformation of analyzed indicators using Soil Management Assessment Framework (SMAF) and Multiple Variable Indicator Transform (MVIT) techniques. Organic matter, water-stable aggregates, pH, cation exchange capacity, macroporosity, and water infiltration were reduced after burning in both sites. Active carbon and potentially mineralizable nitrogen increased after burning at Ibadan but decreased after burning at Akure. Soil quality decreased after burning by a range of 11.3–24.8% using SMAF and MVIT, respectively, although only MVIT showed significant differences (p ≤ 0.05). Test crops increased in yields on burnt soils due to prompt release of nutrients to the crops; the benefit was dwarfed by the adverse effects of burning on soil quality indices.  相似文献

Abstract

A major obstacle to patch spraying of broad-leaved weeds in cereals is a cost-effective method to assess within-field heterogeneity of the weed population. One method could be a camera mounted in front of the spraying vehicle, online image analysis, and field sprayer shifting between ‘on’ and ‘off’ as the predefined weed damage threshold level is reached. Because such a camera will capture a very limited area (<1 m2) compared to the sprayer width (several m), success of this method requires that spraying decisions vary little within boom width, thereby causing few spraying errors. This approach was evaluated by simulations for varying boom widths and three levels of a weed damage threshold model. Potential herbicide reductions compared to blanket application were also simulated. The average potential herbicide reductions estimated as proportions of fields below the threshold, were 60%, 64% and 53% for the original, 25% increased and 25% reduced threshold levels, respectively. The simulated herbicide reductions were not influenced by boom width, but varied significantly between fields, and between threshold levels. As evaluated by spraying errors, the suitability of the suggested approach will increase by decreasing boom width, vary between fields, and in some fields vary between the threshold levels. For boom widths of 15 m and 24 m, the spraying errors were about 10% and 15%, respectively, where omission of spraying areas above the threshold constituted 5% and 8%, respectively.  相似文献

Sorghum shoot fly, Atherigona soccata is an important pest of sorghum during the seedling stage, which influences both fodder and grain yield. To understand the nature of inheritance of shoot fly resistance in sorghum, we performed generation mean analysis using two crosses IS 18551 × Swarna and M 35-1 × ICSV 700 during the 2013–2014 cropping seasons. The F1, F2, BC1 and BC2 progenies, along with the parental lines were evaluated for agronomic and morphological traits associated with resistance/susceptibility to sorghum shoot fly, A. soccata. The cross IS 18551 × Swarna exhibited significant differences between the parents for shoot fly deadhearts (%) in the postrainy season. The progenies of this cross exhibited lower shoot fly damage, suggesting that at least one of the parents should have genes for resistance to develop shoot fly-resistant hybrids. Leaf glossiness, leafsheath pigmentation and plant vigor score during the seedling stage exhibited non-allelic gene interactions with dominant gene action, whereas 100 seed weight showed both additive and dominant gene interactions. Presence of awns showed recessive nature of the awned gene. Generation mean analysis suggested that both additive and dominance gene effects were important for most of the traits evaluated in this study, but dominance had a more pronounced effect.  相似文献

The salmon louse (Lepeophtheirus salmonis) is an ecologically and economically important parasite of salmonid fish. Temperature is a strong influencer of biological processes in salmon lice, with development rate increased at higher temperatures. The successful attachment of lice onto a host is also predicted to be influenced by temperature; however, the correlation of temperature with parasite survival is unknown. This study describes the effects of temperature on infection success, and survival on the host during development to the adult stage. To accurately describe infection dynamics with varying temperatures, infection success was recorded on Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) between 2 and 10°C. Infection success ranged from 20% to 50% and was strongly correlated with temperature, with the highest success at 10°C. Parasite loss was monitored during development at eight temperatures with high loss of lice at 3 and 24°C, whilst no loss was recorded in the temperature range from 6 to 21°C. Sea temperatures thus have large effects on the outcome of salmon louse infections and should be taken into account in the management and risk assessment of this parasite. Improving understanding of the infection dynamics of salmon lice will facilitate epidemiological modelling efforts and efficiency of pest management strategies.  相似文献
