In the Sahel of Africa, where 90 % of the population depends on natural resources for their livelihood, a large part of the soils are structurally unstable,prone to crusting and hard setting, and have low water holding capacity, which hamper vegetation establishment.The effect of soil restoration techniques on survival and growth of seedlings of Acacia nilotica, Acacia tortilis and Jatropha curcas was tested in completely barren, degraded land in a Sahelian ecosystem in Burkina Faso. A total of522 seedlings(174 plants of each plant species) were planted in a randomized complete block design with three replicates combining three soil preparation techniques:half-moon, za¨? and standard plantation. Survival and growth rates evaluated over 20 months were significantly higher using the half-moon technique compared with the other two techniques. Survival rates of plant species planted using half-moon technique were 62.5, 28.57 and10.71 % for A. nilotica, A. tortilis and J. curcas respectively, but in za¨? and standard planting, seedling survival was zero. The low survival rate of J. curcas using the half-moon technique may indicate that J. curcas is unsuitable for barren and degraded land, whereas A. nilotica and A. tortilis appear to be promising tree species for rehabilitation of degraded land.  相似文献

Abstract

Single and combined effects were studied of root length, burial depth, cutting and competition from a seasonal green manure crop on the growth and development of C. arvense from roots found in the upper soil layer. The experiment was performed under field conditions and partly repeated in a green house. The green manure consisted of a mixture of phacelia, common vetch, red clover and Italian ryegrass. Root fragments of 5 and 10 cm length were buried at 5 and 15 cm soil depth, simulating soil tillage. Use of green manure alone reduced growth of C. arvense more than any other single factor (81–99%), while root length and burial depth were more variable in their effect (0–96% reduction). Combined treatments involving both green manure, deep root burial (15 cm) and short root length (5 cm) reduced growth of C. arvense consistently by 95–100%. At the minimum regenerative capacity of C. arvense the number of leaves was 3–7 in plots with no green manure, at which time cutting had the greatest effect on regrowth the following year. The level for minimum regenerative capacity was not possible to decide for C. arvense growing in competition with green manure. Combined multiple treatments in spring, including use of green manure and mechanical operations in the upper soil layers, appear to be a potential means of reducing C. arvense infestations.  相似文献

Accurate preharvest yield estimation is an important issue for agricultural planning purposes and precision farming. Machine learning (ML) based on readily obtained information on the cropping system, typically including spectral reflectance measurements, is an essential approach for achieving practical solutions. We tested in a 9-year soil compaction experiment the accuracy of ML-based yield predictions made up to 2 months before harvest from a Ratio Vegetation Index (RVI) and recordings of precipitation and reference evapotranspiration. The applied data set comprises 224 combinations of plots and years with measured grain yields in the range of 4.22–9.34 Mg/ha. The best ML model [i.e., with the smallest mean absolute error (MAE)] was selected automatically by the AutoML interface included in the R program package H2O. Its cross-validated predictions made on June 30 more than 1 month before harvest showed an MAE of 0.38 Mg/ha when trained on all data from all years except the one under consideration. MAE increased to about 0.68 Mg/ha when determined 3 weeks earlier on June 10. MAE values in the range of 0.32–0.42 Mg/ha were obtained for predictions made on June 30 when based on data from at least six consecutive years; however, MAE showed no generally decreasing trend with the number of years. Yield estimations were robust towards a considerable soil variation observed within the experimental area due in part to the experimental treatments. The results show a potential of making yield predictions in barley 1–2 months before harvest, which, however, is not sufficiently early to support decisions on top-dress N fertilization.  相似文献

In this study fish oil was incorporated into commercial homogenized milk using different homogenization temperatures and pressures. The main aim was to understand the significance of homogenization temperature and pressure on the oxidative stability of the resulting milks. Increasing homogenization temperature from 50 to 72 degrees C decreased droplet size only slightly, whereas a pressure increase from 5 to 22.5 MPa decreased droplet size significantly. Surprisingly, emulsions having small droplets, and therefore large interfacial area, were less oxidized than emulsions having bigger droplets. Emulsions with similar droplet size distributions, but resulting from different homogenization conditions, had significantly different oxidative stabilities, indicating that properties of significance to oxidation other than droplet size itself were affected by the different treatments. In general, homogenization at 72 degrees C appeared to induce protective effects against oxidation as compared to homogenization at 50 degrees C. The results thus indicated that the actual composition of the oil-water interface is more important than total surface area itself.  相似文献

This study compared the oxidative stabilities of fish-oil-enriched milk, yoghurt, and salad dressing and investigated the effects on oxidation of adding either neat fish oil or a fish-oil-in-water emulsion to these products. Milk emulsions had higher levels of a fishy off-flavor and oxidized faster, as determined by the peroxide value and volatile oxidation products, than fish-oil-enriched yoghurt and dressing, despite the fact that dressings had a higher fish oil content and were stored at room temperature. Additionally, fish-oil-enriched yoghurt generally had higher oxidative stability than fish-oil-enriched dressings, irrespective of the mode of fish oil addition. Yoghurt thus seemed to be a good delivery system of lipids containing n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids. Different effects of adding fish oil either as neat fish oil or as a fish-oil-in-water emulsion were observed for milk, yoghurt, and dressing. Yoghurt and dressing enriched with neat fish oil were more stable than those enriched with a fish-oil-in-water emulsion, whereas milk enriched with neat fish oil was less stable than milk enriched with the fish-oil-in-water emulsion. Overall, it seemed that application of neat fish oil was a good option for preserving the final quality in yoghurt and dressings, but a pre-emulsion may still be considered for the fish oil enrichment of certain food products, for example, milk.  相似文献

A total of 832 samples of soybeans were screened by near-infrared (NIR) reflectance spectroscopy, to identify soybean samples with a lower content of oligosaccharides and nonstarch polysaccharides (NSP). Of these, 38 samples were identified on the basis of variation in protein content and agronomic value and submitted to high-resolution NIR spectroscopy. On the basis of the NIR data, 12 samples were further selected for chromatographic characterization of carbohydrate composition (mono-, di-, and oligosaccharides and NSP). Their soluble proteins were separated by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis (2DE). Using partial least-squares regression (PLSR), it was possible to predict the content of total NSP from the high-resolution NIR spectra, suggesting that NIR is a suitable and rapid nondestructive method to determine carbohydrate composition in soybeans. The 2DE analyses showed varying intensities of several proteins, including the glycinin G1 precursor. PLSR analysis showed a negative correlation between this protein and insoluble NSP and total uronic acid (UA).  相似文献

Development of objectionable fishy off-flavors is an obstacle in the development of fish oil enriched foods. Only little is known about the sensory impact of specific volatile fish oil oxidation products in food emulsions. This study examined the volatiles profiles of fish oil enriched milk during cold storage (2 degrees C) for 14 days by dynamic headspace sampling followed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analyses. Different volatiles (n = 60) comprising alkenals, alkadienals, alkatrienals, and vinyl ketones were identified in the fish oil enriched milk. The potent odorants identified by gas chromatography-olfactometry were 1-penten-3-one, (Z)-4-heptenal, 1-octen-3-one, (Z)-1,5-octadien-3-one, (E,E)-2,4-heptadienal, and (E,Z)-2,6-nonadienal, but despite their potency, none of the separated volatiles imparted a fishy or metallic odor. Two isomers, (E,Z,Z) and (E,E,Z) of 2,4,7-decatrienal were identified in fish oil enriched milk emulsions with peroxide values 0.8 and 3.4 meq/kg, respectively. To our knowledge, this is the first report on appearance of these decatrienals in food emulsions having a relatively low peroxide value.  相似文献

Degradation of the potential photosensitizers, riboflavin, chlorophyll, and porphyrin, in Danbo cheese by monochromatic light of wavelength 366, 436, or 546 nm was studied. Three cheeses were investigated, two conventional (16% fat and 25% fat) and one "organic" (25% fat). The effect of illumination was measured by fluorescence spectroscopy and analyzed using multiway and multivariate data analysis. Riboflavin was found to degrade only by 436 nm light, whereas chlorophylls and porphyrins also were influenced by 436 and 546 nm light. The organic cheese had the largest chlorophyll content both before and after similar light exposure, and no change in chlorophyll of this cheese was observed for any of the illumination wavelengths. Upon light exposure of the cheeses, volatile compounds were formed, as analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The relative concentrations of methyl butanoate, 1-pentanol, benzaldehyde, 2-butanone, 2-heptanone, and butyl acetate were found to weakly correlate with the surface fluorescence intensity. 1-Pentanol and the ketones are secondary lipid oxidation products, consistent with a chemical coupling between photosensitizer degradation and formation of volatile lipid oxidation products.  相似文献

Five Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua L.) microsatellites (Gmo8, Gmo19, Gmo35, Gmo37 and Tch11) were selected for parentage assignment. All markers were co‐amplified using dye‐labelled primers and sized by automated sample processing in a 3130xl Genetic Analyser. The genotyping of samples was reproducible and alleles from all loci could be genotyped confidently (precision and accuracy above 99.7 and 99.1% respectively). The number of alleles, observed allelic and genotypic frequencies were calculated. A population database was established for fish originating from randomly selected wild‐caught Norwegian coastal‐ and North‐East Arctic cod. Combined paternity exclusion and the probability of match were 99.97 and 1.5 × 10?9 respectively. The multiplex assay system was used successfully for parental assignment of 2336 juveniles from different mass spawning breeding tanks. Of all offspring, 91.2% were assigned to a single parental pair. In total, 523 different matings were recorded, and 69 of 70 dams and all of the 30 sires contributed to the offspring.  相似文献
