Chemical Review of Gorgostane-Type Steroids Isolated from Marine Organisms and Their 13C-NMR Spectroscopic Data Characteristics

Gorgostane steroids are isolated from marine organisms and consist of 30 carbon atoms with a characteristic cyclopropane moiety. From the pioneering results to the end of 2021, isolation, biosynthesis, and structural elucidation using ¹³C-NMR will be used. Overall, 75 compounds are categorized into five major groups: gorgost-5-ene, 5,6-epoxygorgostane, 5,6-dihydroxygorgostane, 9,11-secogorgostane, and 23-demethylgorgostane, in addition to miscellaneous gorgostane. The structural diversity, selectivity for marine organisms, and biological effects of gorgostane steroids have generated considerable interest in the field of drug discovery research.     

Application of Portfolio Theory for the optimal choice of dairy veterinary management programs

Portfolio theory, an established technique in the selection of stocks and financial instruments for investment purposes, was used as a means of selecting an economic mix of veterinary interventions in a dairy herd. The expected return on investment in six veterinary services and the associated standard deviations (as measures of risk) were calculated using computer simulation modeling techniques. Mathematical programming techniques were applied to identify the optimal combinations of veterinary interventions which maximize expected financial returns while minimizing risk. Parametric analysis was used to show how risk (standard deviation) increases as the required expected return is increased along the efficient risk-return frontier of these optimal combinations. This exercise emphasizes the importance of regarding risk in addition to expected return when considering investment in veterinary services.     

Arboviruses recovered from sentinel livestock in northern Australia

Over 700 arboviruses were recovered between 1981 and 1987 from the blood of sentinel livestock near Darwin. Twenty-three isolates were made from sheep, goats, swamp buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) and horses, and the remainder were from cattle. The isolates have been typed as 27 separate viruses belonging to the bluetongue, epizootic haemorrhagic disease, Palyam, Simbu, bovine ephemeral fever, Tibrogargan and alphavirus groups. Ten of these viruses have not been isolated elsewhere in Australia and four have been isolated only in Darwin. Considerable annual variations in virus activity and in the durations of detectable viraemia were observed.     

Concentrations of bioactive and immunoactive luteinizing hormone in bovine anterior pituitary tissue

Tissue concentrations of LH as determined by radioimmunoassay (RIA) may not accurately measure actual changes that could occur in biological activity of the hormone. To examine this possibility, pituitary homogenates from 135 beef cows in various physiological states were analyzed for content of LH by both RIA and an in vitro bioassay. The ratio of biological/immunological active concentrations of LH remained constant (.52 +/- .02) even though tissue concentrations of immunoactive LH differed among groups. Tissue concentrations of bioactive LH were linearly related to, and highly correlated with (P less than .001), tissue concentrations of immunoactive LH. These data indicate that only a fraction of the immunoactive LH in the bovine pituitary is biologically active. However, this fraction does not vary with the reproductive status or plane of nutrition.     

Effect of prolonged exposure to exogenous melatonin on the onset and end of the breeding season and on the growth rate of ewe lambs

The effect of prolonged exposure to exogenous melatonin on the reproductive status and growth rate of ewe lambs was investigated. Ewe lambs (born late March) were given intravaginal melatonin implants on 4 July (group J, n = 10) during anoestrus, or 20 December (group D, n = 10) during the breeding season. A third group (group C, n = 7) received empty implants on 4 July. Plasma progesterone concentrations were used to assess reproductive status. In the control group cyclic ovarian activity began on November 15 +/- 4 days, and ceased on January 28 +/- 8 days. In group J the onset of the breeding season was advanced by 4.9 weeks (occurring on October 12 +/- 4 days; P less than 0.001). The onset of anoestrus was also advanced in this group with 9 out of 10 of the ewes ceasing ovarian activity at least 3.4 weeks in advance of the control ewes (P less than 0.01). In contrast the timing of anoestrus was unchanged in group D, occurring on February 14 +/- 6 days. Melatonin treatment of ewe lambs from early July had no effect on growth rate, whereas treatment from mid-December had a depressive effect. Ewes therefore become refractory to the inductive effects of exogenous melatonin after long-term exposure. The results are consistent with the view that photorefractoriness is due to changes in the processing rather than the generation of the melatonin signal.     

The renal excretion of pethidine administered postoperatively to male dogs

The urinary excretion of pethidine and its major metabolite, norpethidine, was investigated in four male dogs given pethidine as a postoperative analgesic. The urinary excretion of pethidine in the first 4 h after drug administration was low at 1.9% of the administered dose. The percentage of the drug excreted as norpethidine was also low at 3.7% but there was a great deal of individual variation. Urinary excretion, therefore, appears to be a minor route in the clearance of pethidine in the dog.
