Effectiveness of oxibendazole against benzimidazole-resistant strongyles in horses

Twenty-eight horses with a residual burden of strongyle eggs in the faces after treatment with mebendazole (MBZ) paste were treated with a suspension of either MBZ or oxibendazole (OBZ). Fecal samples were collected before and 14 days after these treatments. The number of strongyle eggs/g (epg) of feces for each horse was estimated using the Cornell-McMaster dilution and the Cornell-Wisconsin double centrifugation procedures. The epg for each horse was transformed using log (× + 1) and in an analysis of variance of the reduction in egg count for each horse on the logarithmic scale, there was a highly significant difference between the treatments. The mean epg was increased in the MBZ-treated horses and reduced in the OBZ-treated horses, but the reduction was only by 82% with an upper confidence limit of 89%. Subsequently, the horses were retreated with MBZ and OBZ suspensions without significant reduction in the mean epg for OBZ-treated horses.     

Lafora disease as a cause of visually exacerbated myoclonic attacks in a dog

An 8-year-old, castrated male, miniature wire-haired dachshund was presented with a 4-month history of intermittent facial twitching (myoclonus). The myoclonic episodes progressed over a 16-month period. Generalized seizure activity was infrequent. Clinical examination revealed visually stimulated myoclonus. Response to therapy with antiepileptic drugs was equivocal. Genetic testing identified the dog as being affected by Lafora disease.     

Comparison of three mathematical models of egg production

1. Egg production of four‐way crosses of seven commercial stocks of White Leghorns was summarised for each hen into 28‐d periods starting from the day of first egg.

2. The exponential models of McMillan and of Wood and a linear regression were fitted to the results for individual hens, as well as to the mean results for periods of groups of hens.

3. Overall, the McMillan model gave the best results with mean R² of 0.71 from fitting it to the results for 223 individuals with sixteen 28‐d periods each and R² of 0.97 from fitting it to the period means for groups. The respective R² values were 0.68 and 0.95 for the Wood model and 0.60 and 0.90 for the linear regression.     

Hematology and biochemistry reference values for Ontario swine.

The purpose of this study was to establish blood reference values for Ontario swine from various age groups. Weanling pigs, feeder pigs, gilts and sows on 11 randomly selected swine farms were sampled using the orbital sinus bleeding technique. Routine hematological and biochemical determinations were performed using whole blood and serum. For the variables examined in each age group the means, the standard deviations and the 95% upper and lower limits were calculated.
