Background: The occurrence of aspen trees increases the conservation value of mature conifer dominated forests.Aspens typically occur as scattered individuals among major tree species, and therefore the inventory of aspens is challenging.Methods: We characterized aspen populations in a boreal nature reserve using diameter distribution, spatial pattern, and forest attributes: volume, number of aspens, number of large aspen stems and basal area median diameter. The data were collected from three separate forest stands in Koli National Park, eastern Finland. At each site, we measured breast height diameter and coordinates of each aspen. The comparison of inventory methods of aspens within the three stands was based on simulations with mapped field data. We mimicked stand level inventory by locating varying numbers of fixed area circular plots both systematically and randomly within the stands. Additionally, we also tested if the use of airborne laser scanning(ALS) data as auxiliary information would improve the accuracy of the stand level inventory by applying the probability proportional to size sampling to assist the selection of field plot locations.Results: The results showed that aspens were always clustered, and the diameter distributions indicated different stand structures in the three investigated forest stands. The reliability of the volume and number of large aspen trees varied from relative root mean square error figures above 50% with fewer sample plots(5–10) to values of25%–50% with 10 or more sample plots. Stand level inventory estimates were also able to detect spatial pattern and the shape of the diameter distribution. In addition, ALS-based auxiliary information could be useful in guiding the inventories, but caution should be used when applying the ALS-supported inventory technique.Conclusions: This study characterized European aspen populations for the purposes of monitoring and management of boreal conservation areas. Our results suggest that if the number of sample plots is adequate,i.e. 10 or more stand level inventory will provide accurate enough forest attributes estimates in conservation areas(minimum accuracy requirement of RMSE% is 20%–50%). Even for the more ecologically valuable attributes, such as diameter distribution, spatial pattern and large aspens, the estimates are acceptable for conservation purposes.  相似文献

Diameter distribution models for even-aged Eucalyptus grandis plantations in Zimbabwe were developed using the two-parameter Weibull function. The analysis was based on data from Correlated Curve Trend (CCT) experiments replicated on four different sites. Parameters of the Weibull distribution were predicted using stand characteristics as regressors. Two sets of parameter models were estimated: a set with and one without stand basal area as a predictor. Stand variables such as dominant height, age, site index and number of stems were used in both sets. The models were further calibrated to result in a given number of stems and stand basal area simultaneously. The usability of constructed models was tested both in prediction of yield in a stand inventory situation and in simulation of growth in connection with different growth models. The results indicated that models not including stand basal area produce considerably less precise stand volume estimates compared to models including also stand basal area. Calibration improved the accuracy of diameter distribution models. In growth simulation diameter distribution models can be connected both to single tree growth models and to stand projection models. The usability of calibration in growth simulation depends on the accuracy of the prediction of stand characteristics.  相似文献

This study analysed of the ability of a crop model to simulate crop nitrogen (N) balance. The model was originally developed to serve as a foundation to develop a decision-making tool to analyse the impact of water management and nitrogen fertilization on crop yield. The model included a dynamic parameter for allocation of dry matter between root and shoot allowing root to shoot ratio to vary according to differing environmental conditions. The new allocation parameter was introduced in order to make the model more applicable under water and nitrogen limited growing conditions. Two wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) data sets were used to test the model simulations. Generally, the model simulations agreed well with the recorded data on crop N uptake. The relationship between the actual and simulated amount of N taken up by the crop was close in the calibration treatments of a greenhouse experiment. The coefficient of determination (r2) of the regression line (simulated value = independent variable, measured value = dependent variable) was 0.90. The r2 was 0.83 for the validation data. In the field experiments, the r2 values were 0.91 for the calibration data and 0.82 for the validation data. In field data, the model underestimated in some cases the crop N uptake during the period when actual shoot dry weight increased exponentially in spring. Therefore, methods used in computation of nitrogen uptake have to be analysed further. Plant organ N content was simulated satisfactorily for both greenhouse and field data. However, the range over which the simulated values varied was larger than in the actual data.

The results from the study indicate that our model is capable of simulating the crop N balance and we suggest that the model could be used when developing an N application decision tool for field crops. However, the availability of N and soil water were provided as inputs in the present study. Thus, the model should be integrated with models simulating below ground processes in the future. Moreover, the model should be further validated with actual field data.  相似文献

Key message

We examine how the configurations in nearest neighbor imputation affect the performance of predicted species-specific diameter distributions. The simultaneous nearest neighbor imputation for all tree species and separate imputation by tree species are evaluated with total volume calibration as a prediction method for diameter distributions.

Context

This study considers the predictions of species-specific diameter distributions in Finnish boreal forests by means of airborne laser scanning (ALS) data and aerial images.

Aims

The aim was to investigate different configurations in non-parametric nearest neighbor (NN) imputation and to determine how changes in configurations affect prediction error rates for timber assortment volumes and the error indices of the diameter distributions.

Methods

Non-parametric NN imputation was used as a modeling method and was applied in two different ways: (1) diameter distributions were predicted at the same time for all tree species by simultaneous NN imputation, and (2) diameter distributions were predicted for one tree species at a time by separate NN imputation. Calibration to a regression-based total volume prediction was applied in both cases.

Results

The results indicated that significant changes in the volume prediction error rates for timber assortment and for error indices can be achieved by the selection of responses, calibration to total volume, and separate NN imputation by tree species.

Conclusion

Overall, the selection of response variables in NN imputation and calibration to total volume improved the predicted diameter distribution error rates. The most successful prediction performance of diameter distribution was achieved by separate NN imputation by tree species.

Immunolabeling for the critical lymphocyte survival factor, Bcl-2, of intestinal biopsies from cats with histologic evidence of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) or gastrointestinal (GI) lymphoma was evaluated to determine if expression differed significantly between these two disease processes. Immunolabeling for Bcl-2 was performed on small intestinal endoscopic or full thickness biopsy sections from 55 cats. Diagnosis of IBD, T-cell lymphoma or B-cell lymphoma was established previously. The percentage of infiltrating lymphocytes that were positively labeled for Bcl-2 was subjectively determined for each case. Eight cats were diagnosed with IBD and 47 cats with lymphoma. A significantly higher percentage of cells were positively immunolabeled for Bcl-2 in cats with GI lymphoma [median (range); 90 (5-95)%] compared with cats with IBD [60 (15-95)%] (P = 0.029). However, the overall degree of positive immunolabeling in both groups tended to be high. This over-expression of Bcl-2 may prove useful as a therapeutic target for IBD and GI lymphoma in cats.  相似文献

Predictive factors for forwarder rut formation were studied on fine-grained mineral soils. The study was carried out in southern Finland in mid-May, when the soil water contents were high after snowmelt. A total of 7 study tracks of 20?m were cut with a harvester. After removing the logging residues, a loaded forwarder made 3–4 passes on each track. The forwarder rut depth was related to the total overdriven mass driven over the measurement line, volumetric water content, cone penetration resistance and the harvester rut depth. A total of five mixed-effects models are presented to predict the rut depth. The first model includes the overdriven cumulative mass, volumetric water content of the soil and the cone penetration resistance. As a penetrometer is more of a research tool, the second model includes only the overdriven cumulative mass and water content, factors that can be used in practical planning operations. The remaining three models all include the rut depth after the harvester pass and the overdriven cumulative mass and also include volumetric water content and cone penetration resistance. The model including the rut depth after a harvester pass and the overdriven cumulative mass is a good predictor of the rut depth and supports earlier findings on the connection between harvester and forwarder rut formations.  相似文献

Leptospirosis was identified to be the possible cause of premature birth in a foal on a farm with a history of repeated abortions. Using an appropriate polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay, the presence of Leptospira kirschneri was detected in the tissues of the prematurely born foal. Further confirmation of L. kirschneri was obtained by nucleotide sequence analysis of the PCR-amplified DNA fragment and the partial 16S ribosomal RNA gene sequence. This report further supports mounting evidence that a PCR assay capable of detecting L. kirschneri should be included in routine diagnostic investigations in which Leptospira spp. infection is suspected.  相似文献

A 13-year-old 4.6-kg (10.2-lb) neutered male domestic long hair cat was evaluated because of a history of lethargy, exercise intolerance, and ventroflexion of the cervical portion of the vertebral column. After extensive assessment at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital at Michigan State University, the clinical signs were attributed to an aldosterone-secreting tumor of the adrenal gland. Subsequently, an insulin-secreting tumor of the pancreas as well as a functional parathyroid gland adenoma were diagnosed. All 3 masses were surgically removed, and the cat made a full recovery with complete resolution of clinical signs. The syndrome of multiple endocrine neoplasia is well described in humans, and the heritability of the condition has been confirmed. In cats and other species with 1 or more endocrine neoplasms, it is important to perform thorough clinical assessments of patients to identify other endocrine organs that may also be affected concurrently with neoplastic disease.  相似文献

Squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs) are common skin tumours of cats. Previous studies have suggested that papillomaviral (PV) DNA is detectible within some feline SCCs. A PV DNA sequence has been previously amplified from five feline bowenoid in situ carcinomas (BISCs). Primers specific for this sequence were used in a nested polymerase chain reaction to compare PV detection rates in SCCs to rates within non-SCC skin lesions. Papillomaviral DNA was amplified from 20 of 20 BISC, 17 of 20 invasive SCC and 3 of 17 non-SCC controls. The rate of PV amplification from feline cutaneous SCCs was significantly higher than from non-SCC lesions. These results confirm that feline cutaneous SCCs are associated with PV infection. In humans, there is evidence that PVs promote SCC development within sun-exposed skin. The demonstrated association between PVs and feline cutaneous SCCs suggests, but does not prove, that PVs may also promote feline SCC development. If PVs are oncogenic in cats, prevention of PV infection may reduce feline cutaneous SCC development. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first time that PV DNA has been amplified from a non-SCC sample of feline skin.  相似文献
