The spatial distribution patterns of the attack on fresh logs ofPasania edulis was studied for the oak borer,Platypus quercivorus (Murayama), and two species of Scolytid ambrosia beetles,Xylosandrus crassiusculus (Motschulsky) andXyleborus attenuatus Blanford, in 1994 and 1995. On the logs where onlyP. quercivorus attacked, the entry holes were distributed uniformly when attack intensity was low. However, the distribution pattern became
more aggregated with the increase in attack intensity. On logs where bothP. quercivorus and the two Scolytid species attacked, there was a negative association between the spatial distribution of the entry holes
ofP. quercivorus and that of scolytids. Simultaneous attack of two scolytids also increased the degree of aggregation of the entry holes ofP. quercivorus. The entry holes of scolytids were distributed in groups irrespective of the attack intensity of scolytids andP. quercivorus. These results suggest an asymmetrical interspecific relationship betweenP. quercivorus and scolytids. Concentration of the entry holes ofP. quercivorus in a small area may cause a considerable decline in the reproductive success in the galleries constructed there. 相似文献

High water temperature influences the survival, growth, and maturation of fish. Genetically characterizing thermal tolerance
is one of the most important subjects in fish culture. To identify the genetic characterization of thermal tolerance, this
characteristic was compared among strains, and among parents and their offspring, in the guppy Poecilia reticulata. In the strain comparison, significant differences in survival rate were observed among the five strains examined, and between
females and males. Females exhibited greater tolerance than males in four of five strains examined. In the comparison between
parents and their offspring, stronger influence of female parent than of male parent was observed. Offspring obtained from
surviving females exhibited greater tolerance than those from dead females. This tendency was typically observed in male offspring.
The survival rate in male offspring obtained from dead female parents was lower than that of those from surviving females.
The high-temperature tolerance of male parents did not influence this characteristic in offspring as strongly as that of female
parents. These results suggest that the major gene or genes, which has a dominant resistant allele and a recessive sensitive
allele, are probably passed on by sex-linked inheritance, located on the X chromosome. 相似文献

We examined factors affecting the vertical distribution of juvenile walleye pollock during “the second critical period” (i.e. the transition period of prey size) in and around Funka Bay, Hokkaido, Japan. During the day, small juveniles (<30 mm) were distributed mainly in shallow, warm, and low-salinity water within the bay, whereas larger ones (≥30 mm) occurred in deeper, cold and saline water. During the night, the large juveniles migrated to shallower depths. Outside the bay, small- and large-sized juveniles were distributed in water masses of similar physical properties during the daytime, whereas during the nighttime, most of the juveniles moved to shallower depth, and some juveniles dived to deeper water mass. Dietary analysis revealed that large juveniles fed on large copepods (≥0.5 mm in body width) more than small juveniles did. The composition of zooplankton in our survey area showed that large-sized copepods often occurred in deeper saline water. From these results, there is a possibility that juvenile pollock inside and outside Funka Bay occupied different water masses preferable for each feeding advantage. 相似文献

Estimating carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) stocks in deadwood in forests nationwide is required for understanding large-scale C and N cycling. To do so requires estimated values of wood density and C and N concentrations. Additionally, parameters that show variation should be examined. In this study, we clarified the estimated values and the variation in three parameters in each decay class of each of two tree species and examined whether dead log diameter and region contribute to variation in the parameters. Data were collected from 73 Chamaecyparis obtusa (Sieb. et Zucc.) Endl. plantations and 66 Cryptomeria japonica D. Don plantations throughout Japan. Wood densities decreased from 386 to 188?kg?m?3 for C. obtusa and from 334 to 188?kg?m?3 for C. japonica in decay classes 1–4. The variation in wood density increased with decay class, and the coefficient of variance increased from 13.9% to 46.4% for C. obtusa and from 15.2% to 48.1% for C. japonica. The N concentrations increased from 1.04 to 4.40?g?kg?1 for C. obtusa and from 1.11 to 2.97?g?kg?1 for C. japonica in decay classes 1–4. The variation in N concentration increased with decay class, and the coefficient of variance increased from 51.9% to 76.7% for C. obtusa and from 50.3% to 70.4% for C. japonica. Log diameter and region contributed to variations in wood density and N concentration in decay classes 1 and 2 for C. obtusa and C. japonica. However, no relationship was observed between regional climates and the two parameters. In contrast, C concentrations ranged from 507 to 535?g?kg?1 and were stable with much lower coefficients of variance throughout the decay classes for both tree species. Thus, we recommend that the same C concentration can be adapted for all decay classes of both tree species. 相似文献

The concentrations of Ca, Mg, K, N, P, and C, the ratios of C/N, C/P, and N/P, and pH values in L, F, and H layers were compared between a coniferous dominated forest group and a broad-leaved dominated forest group. L layers in the broad-leaved group displayed significantly higher nutrients concentrations, except for N a and P, and higher pH values than those in the coniferous group. This pattern extended to the F layers. In the F layers the broad-leaved group showed a substantial decrease in K concentrations compared with the L layers. In the H layers, pH values and Ca concentrations became very low for both groups. Carbon concentrations decreased linearly from the L to H layers. The degree of increase in Nand P concentrations from the L to F layers was larger than that from the F to H layers. Magnesium and Na concentrations did not vary appreciably among the layers. Between the groups no significant differences in the values of N, P, C, Na, N/P, and pH were found in the H layers, and the differences in the Ca, K, and C/N values became negligible. The results suggest that the H layers displayed relatively homogeneous characteristics for nutrient conditions even though the above ground vegetation was different. 相似文献

To understand the organic sulfur (S) stabilization in volcanic soils, we investigated organic S transformation rates and their relationships to soil properties in incubation experiments using forest soils from the Nikko volcanic region, central Japan. We hypothesized that carbon (C)-bonded S would first be transformed into ester sulfate-S and then into inorganic sulfate-S. We separately calculated the rates of decrease of C-bonded S (velocity 1, v 1) and ester sulfate-S (velocity 2, v 2) concentrations. During incubation, the ester sulfate-S concentration increased in two soils characterized by a high concentration of both ammonium oxalate-extractable aluminum (Alo) and pyrophosphate-extractable Al (Alp), whereas the C-bonded S concentration decreased in all soils. A large proportion of the S that was lost in the incubation experiments consisted of C-bonded S rather than ester sulfate-S. Velocity 2 was negatively correlated with both of Alo and Alp contents when soils were incubated at 20 °C. These results suggest that when C-bonded S is transformed into ester sulfate-S, complete mineralization to inorganic sulfate is inhibited, because ester sulfate-S is stabilized due to organo–mineral association. Incubation temperatures significantly affected v 2. Thus, production of inorganic sulfate by mineralization of ester sulfate-S appeared to be regulated by soil Al contents and temperatures. Velocity 1 was proportional to soil pH ranging from 4.5 to 5.5, indicating that the degradation of C-bonded S is pH dependent. 相似文献

Virus-like symptoms—red ringspots on stems and leaves, circular blotches or pale spots on fruit—were found on commercial highbush
blueberry (Vaccinium
corymbosum) cultivars Blueray, Weymouth, Duke and Sierra in Japan. In PCR testing, single DNA fragments were amplified from total nucleic
acid samples of the diseased blueberry bushes using primers specific to Blueberry red ringspot virus (BRRV). Sequencing analysis of the amplified products revealed 95.7–97.7% nucleotide sequence identity with the BRRV genome.
This paper is the first report of blueberry red ringspot disease caused by BRRV in Japan.
The nucleotide sequence data reported in this paper are available in the GenBank/EMBL/DDBJ database as accessions AB469884
to AB469893 for BRRV isolates from Japan. 相似文献

We estimated fine root biomass in a Japanese cedar (Cryptomeria japonica) plantation using a min-irhizotron technique. Since data obtained from minirhizo-trons are limited to the length and diameter of fine roots observed on minirhizotron tubes, data conversion is necessary to determine the fine root biomass per unit soil volume or unit stand area. We first examined the regression between diameter squared and weight per unit length of fine roots in soil core samples, and calculated the fine root biomass on minirhizotron tubes from their length and diameter. Then we determined conversion factors based on the ratio of the fine root biomass in soil core samples to that on minirhizotron tubes. We examined calculation methods, using a single conversion factor for total fine root biomass in the soil for depths of 0–40cm (Cal1), or using four conversion factors for fine roots in the soil at 10-cm intervals (Cal2). Cal1 overestimated fine root biomass in the lower soil or underestimated that in the upper soil, while fine root biomass calculated using Cal2 better matched that in soil core samples. These results suggest that minirhizotron data should be converted separately for different soil depths to better estimate fine root biomass. 相似文献

The organic layer is an important carbon pool in the forest ecosystem but has sometimes been underestimated or ignored. An equation estimating the carbon mass of the organic layer from its dry weight was developed using a dataset collected from various forests in Japan. The equation (logC = –0.393 + 1.031logW, where C is the carbon mass of the organic layer per unit area and W is the dry weight of organic layer per unit area) could be used to estimate the carbon mass of the organic layer with a small error (R
2 = 0.986, n = 67). The factor that converts organic matter to carbon was also examined. The factor of 1.89 ± 0.23 was suitable for the organic layer. 相似文献

ABSTRACT Apple latent spherical virus (ALSV) expressing yellow and cyan fluorescent proteins (ALSV-YFP and ALSV-CFP) was used to investigate the distribution of identical virus populations in coinfected plants. In Chenopodium quinoa plants inoculated with a mixture of ALSV-YFP and ALSV-CFP, fluorescence from YFP and CFP was always distributed separately in both inoculated and upper uninoculated leaves. Inoculation of each ALSV-YFP and ALSV-CFP to different leaves of a C. quinoa plant resulted in the separate distribution of each virus population among different upper leaves. When C. quinoa leaves were first inoculated with ALSV-CFP and then ALSV-YFP was reinoculated into the same leaves at various times after the first inoculation, ALSV-YFP infected only tissues where ALSV-CFP infection had not been established. The spatial separation was also found in Nicotiana benthamiana leaves coinoculated with Bean yellow mosaic virus (BYMV)-YFP and BYMV-CFP. In contrast, both YFP and CFP fluorescence signals were observed in the same tissues of N. benthamiana leaves mixed infected with ALSV-YFP and BYMV-CFP. YFP fluorescence from ALSV-YFP in mixed-infected leaves was brighter and longer than in leaves infected with ALSV-YFP singly. 相似文献
