Pathological and bacteriological examinations were carried out on a neonatal calf that had developed nervous symptoms such as opisthotonus and blindness since it was born one month prior to full term. The principal lesions were characterized by fibrinopurulent inflammation of the meninges, choroid plexuses, and ventricular walls with limited extension to the subependymal parenchyma in the spinal cord. Purulent inflammation was also found in several visceral organs and tissues. Streptococcus pluranimalium was isolated from the brain and cerebrospinal fluid. These results suggest that the animal suffered from meningoventriculitis with septicemic S. pluranimalium infection. 相似文献

Effects of oceanic-climate changes on the abundance of Pacific saury (Cololabis saira) in the northwestern Pacific during the last half century were investigated. Abundance indices of both large and medium size groups exhibit interannual–decadal variations, but their patterns were different. The large and medium size groups of saury are corresponding to the recruitments of winter- and spring-cohort, respectively. The abundance of large size group saury was significantly correlated with the winter sea surface temperature (SST) in the Kuroshio region, whereas the medium size group saury showed high correlations with SST in the Kuroshio–Oyashio transition zone and the Oyashio region, indicating that the two size groups are affected by subtropical and subarctic environment, respectively. Significant negative correlation between the abundance index and the southern oscillation index (SOI) suggested that El Niño-southern oscillation (ENSO) events have marked impacts on the large size group saury. Subtropical high pressure index and far east zonal index also show high correlations with the abundance of both large and medium size group saury, indicating a linkage between large-scale atmospheric circulation and the abundance of saury. These correlations demonstrate that the abundance of Pacific saury is directly affected by the SST fields through large-scale atmosphere–ocean interactions from the equatorial Pacific to mid- and high-latitude areas such as El Niño events. 相似文献

We studied the spawning seasonality and gonadal development of blue marlin Makaira nigricans using specimens captured around Yonaguni Island in southwestern Japan between February 2003 and February 2006. The mean (±SD)
lower jaw–fork length of females (234 ± 24 cm) was greater than that of males (191 ± 12 cm). The smallest mature female and
male were 183 and 160 cm, respectively. Most of the 717 females had immature ovaries. However, in March and from May to September,
the ovaries of 26 females contained oocytes with yolk globules, hydrated oocytes, or postovulatory follicles. Most males had
testes with a large amount of spermatozoa throughout the year. The occurrence of mature blue marlin at Yonaguni Island suggests
that spawning occurs here. The mean condition factors (fatness of the fish) of both sexes decreased from March to June or
July, presumably as they expended energy to reproduce. We discuss our results in the context of migration theory for blue

Microorganisms colonizing the leaf sheaths of rice plants placed in a waterlogged paddy field were studied using a scanning electron microscope. Decomposition was faster on the adaxial side than on the abaxial side of the leaf sheaths. The veins and trichomes were highly resistant to microbial decomposition throughout the waterlogged period of rice growth. The decomposition and disintegration of leaf sheaths markedly progressed from the third month (from July) after the placement in the paddy field. Microbial colonization was gradual in the first month after the placement of leaf sheaths in the field. One of the common first colonizers had a terminal endospore (Clostridium dissolvens-like microorganisms). Microbial colonization proceeded actively in the second month, and microbiota became diversified. Microbial colonization on the adaxial surface was more than that on the abaxial surface. Respective microorganisms colonized the surfaces separately from each others in this period. They grew mainly on the thin membrane that covered the epidermal layer. Microbial colonies spread all over the abaxial and adaxial surfaces, and there was no significant difference in the degree of colonization between the abaxial surface and the adaxial surface in the third month (in July). Although separate colonization of the respective microorganisms was common, the co-existence of different microorganisms within a colony was also observed. The thin membrane that covered the epidermal layer and the epidermis seemed to be the main substrate during this period. Co-existence of different microorganisms was a common occurrence in colony formation, and organic debris and remaining tissues of leaf sheaths were assumed to be the major substrates in August. These findings on microbial colonization were well correlated with the findings on the degree of decomposition. 相似文献

Abstract Beets were grown on soils with various exchangeable sodium percentages (ESP). A saline non-sodic soil (SA, ESP = 3.2), a saline sodic soil (SO, ESP = 23), and a saline high sodic soil (HSO, ESP = 78) were prepared from Tottori sand dune soil (CO). K-type and Ca-type artificial zeolites (50 g kg?1) were applied to these soils in order to evaluate their effects on the chemical properties of saturation extracts of the soils, water deficit, cation uptake and transport, and cation balance of beet plants. In the zeolite-free treatments, beet growth was accelerated in SA and SO, but was suppressed in HSO compared with CO. The addition of both types of zeolites ameliorated plant growth in all the soils studied, especially HSO. The relative dry weight of the soils treated by the K-type zeolite to the zeolitefree soil was 189% for CO, 125% for SA, 130% for SO, and 222% for HSO. For the soils treated with the Ca-type zeolite, the values were 169, 116, 132, and 341%, respectively. In SA, SO, and HSO, the addition of the K-type zeolite increased the K uptake due to the increase of the K concentration of saturation extracts of soils. The addition of the Ca-type zeolite increased the Ca uptake due to the increase in the Ca concentration of the saturation extracts of soils which was accompanied by an increase in the K uptake. The increase in the uptake of K or Ca and decreased in the transport of Na by the addition of both types of zeolites improved the cation balance of the plants. The Ca-type zeolite did not increase the water deficit even though it increased the electric conductivity in all the soils. The results indicated that both types of artificial zeolites were able to improve the growth performance of beets in saline and sodic soils and that the K-type zeolite could be used as a K-fertilizer as well. 相似文献

Bovine abortion caused by the Apicomplexa parasite Neospora caninum is a major economical problem in the livestock industry worldwide. However, the relationship between N. caninum infection and abortion is still unknown. Our study aimed to elucidate the relationship between parasite-specific antibody responses, parasite stages and abortion. In experimentally infected cattle, anti-NcGRA7 IgG1 antibody was predominantly detected during the acute infection stage, while the production of anti-NcSAG1 IgG1 antibody was observed during both acute and chronic stages. Furthermore, levels of anti-NcGRA7 IgG2 antibody were lower than those of anti-NcSAG1 IgG2 antibody. When tested on cattle with Neospora-associated abortion, positive rates of the anti-NcGRA7 IgG2 antibody were significantly lower than those of the anti-NcSAG1 antibody, although there was no difference in IgG1 antibody-positive rates between the two antigens. In addition, anti-NcGRA7 IgG2 antibodies were not detected in cattle for more than 30days after abortion. Our results suggested that anti-NcGRA7 and anti-NcSAG1 antibodies are suitable indicators for the activation stage of N. caninum infection and broad detection of the infection, respectively. In conclusion, the use of recombinant NcGRA7 and NcSAG1-based ELISAs will be useful for evaluating the abortion risk associated with N. caninum infection. 相似文献

Ranaviruses are serious pathogens of fish, amphibians, and reptiles, and pose a major threat to global biodiversity. A ranavirus isolated from tissues of diseased tadpoles and frogs in Gangwon province, Korea, in 2006 and 2007, was designated Korean ranavirus-1 (KRV-1) and was infectious in a variety of fish cell lines with highest titers (1010 TCID50/ml) in Epithelioma papulosum cyprini cells (EPCs) and baby hamster kidney-21 (BHK-21) cells. Bullfrog (Rana catesbeiana) tadpoles challenged by immersion in 105 TCID50/ml of KRV-1 showed 60% mortality within 10 days. SDS-PAGE of frog virus 3 (FV3) and KRV-1 proteins yielded several bands 35-49 kDa in size, which were identified as major capsid proteins (MCPs) by MALDI-TOF MS. Immunoblotting of FV3 proteins showed antigenic bands 34 kDa and 93 kDa in size which were identified by MALDI-TOF/TOF MS as MCP and neurofilament triplet H1-like protein (NF-H1), respectively. In KRV-1, antigenic bands at 32 kDa, 69 kDa, and 72 kDa were identified as MCP, Hypothetical protein, and NF-H1, respectively. The genes encoding these KRV-1 proteins were sequenced. KRV-1 appeared to be closely related to the soft-shelled turtle iridovirus (STIV), based on alignments of amino acid sequences from various ranaviruses. Variability in ranavirus antigenic proteins was apparent in an earlier study. It is expected that use of the methods employed here, together with the results of the present work, will contribute to an understanding of the pathogenesis of ranaviruses, and will further the development of DNA- or protein-based bait vaccines for conservation of natural habitats. 相似文献

Blood pressure in female SDT-fa/fa rats was periodically investigated at ages 8, 16, and 24 weeks. Furthermore, an insulin therapy was performed for 5 weeks in the female rats at age 11 weeks, and the change of blood pressure was examined. In addition to obesity, hyperglycemia, hyperinsulinemia, and hyperlipidemia, hyperleptinemia and increased urinary angiotensinogen level were observed during the experimental period. Blood pressure was elevated at ages 8 and 16 weeks, but that at 24 weeks was comparable to that in Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats. Heart rate was decreased from age 8 to 24 weeks. Insulin therapy induced good glycemic control and improvement of hyperlipidemia, but the blood pressure was not reduced. Blood pressure in female SDT-fa/fa rats was elevated temporarily. The blood pressure was not decreased by insulin treatment. SDT-fa/fa rat is a useful model to investigate the relation between diabetes mellitus and hypertension. 相似文献

The current study was conducted to investigate the effects of 100% foetal bovine serum (FBS) and 100% porcine follicular fluid (pFF) as a storage medium on the developmental competence of porcine zygotes stored at 25°C for 24 hr. Moreover, we evaluated the additive effects of chlorogenic acid (CGA) in the storage medium. When in vitro‐produced zygotes were stored at 25°C for 24 hr in tubes containing either tissue culture medium (TCM) 199 supplemented with 1 mg/ml bovine serum albumin (BSA), 100% of FBS or 100% of pFF, the rate of blastocyst formation was significantly higher in 100% of FBS than in BSA‐containing TCM 199. When the effects of CGA supplementation in 100% of FBS on the development of zygotes stored at 25°C for 24 hr was evaluated, more zygotes stored with 50 µM CGA developed to blastocysts compared with the other concentrations of CGA. When the formation date and quality of blastocysts derived from zygotes stored in 100% of FBS supplemented with 50 µM CGA were investigated, the highest ratio of blastocysts formation in the storage group appeared 1 day later than in the non‐stored control group. However, a higher proportion of blastocysts with apoptotic nuclei was observed in the stored group as compared to the non‐stored group. In conclusion, 100% of FBS is available for a short storage medium of porcine zygotes. The supplementation of 50 µM CGA into the storage medium improves the rates of blastocyst formation of zygotes after storage, but the quality of embryos from the stored zygotes remains to be improved. 相似文献
