In this study, the distribution of eight allelochemicals among the foliage, roots, and seeds of different wheat varieties is reported for two different sampling campaigns, corresponding to two consecutive years. The determination of benzoxazinoid derivatives was performed by combining pressurized liquid extraction--solid-phase extraction followed by liquid chromatography--electrospray mass spectrometry. To the authors' knowledge, there are no previous works about the content of allelochemicals in seed tissue of germinated wheat seedlings. Allelochemicals found in seeds were detected at levels similar to those found in foliage and roots. The results showed that the type of metabolites detected depends strongly on the working up procedure of the plant material, as well as of plant growth stage. A general decrease of the total amount of allelochemical content in the plants was observed with plant age. There was a significant difference in the total amount of benzoxazinoid derivatives in the different wheat varieties analyzed.  相似文献

Emerging diseases are among the greatest threats to honey bees. Unfortunately, where and when an emerging disease will appear are almost impossible to predict. The arrival of the parasitic Varroa mite into the Hawaiian honey bee population allowed us to investigate changes in the prevalence, load, and strain diversity of honey bee viruses. The mite increased the prevalence of a single viral species, deformed wing virus (DWV), from ~10 to 100% within honey bee populations, which was accompanied by a millionfold increase in viral titer and a massive reduction in DWV diversity, leading to the predominance of a single DWV strain. Therefore, the global spread of Varroa has selected DWV variants that have emerged to allow it to become one of the most widely distributed and contagious insect viruses on the planet.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine a satisfactory combination of guaifenesin, ketamine, and xylazine (GKX) that would produce safe and satisfactory total intravenous anesthesia in donkeys for use under field conditions. Donkeys require higher amounts of ketamine in GKX to achieve satisfactory anesthetic levels without producing excessive depression with guaifenesin. Five adult standard donkeys (average weight, 264 kg) were anesthetized with 1.5 mg/mL ketamine, 0.5 mg/mL xylazine, 50 mg/mL guaifenesin (GKX-1); 2.0 mg/mL ketamine, 0.5 mg/mL xylazine, 50 mg/mL guaifenesin (GKX-2); or 2.0 mg/mL ketamine, 0.75 mg/mL xylazine, 50 mg/mL guaifenesin (GKX-3). For the first trial, two donkeys received GKX-1, two received GKX-2, and one received GKX-3. One donkey received GKX-1, one received GKX-2, and three received GKX-3 for the second trial. In the final trial, two received GKX-1, two received GKX-2, and one received GKX-3. Donkeys were sedated with xylazine (1.1 mg/kg body weight) intravenously, and anesthesia was induced using intravenous GKX-1, GKX-2, or GKX-3. Anesthesia was maintained for 45 minutes; temperature, respiration rate, heart rate, hemoglobin saturation, partial pressure of arterial oxygen (PaO2), partial pressure of carbon dioxide in arterial gas (PaCO2), and pH were measured. There was no significant difference between combinations for temperature, respiration rate, heart rate, hemoglobin saturation, PaCO2, or pH. At 30 and 45 minutes, GKX-3 produced significantly (P < .05) lower PaO2 values than GKX-1 and GKX-2. GKX-3 is not recommended for field use in donkeys because of respiratory depression (PaO2= 48.7 [±5.84] and 46.0 ± 3.11 mmHg at 30 and 45 minutes, respectively), whereas more voluntary movement was apparent with GKX-1. GKX-2 produced satisfactory anesthesia without significant respiratory depression in donkeys and should produce safe and effective anesthesia in donkeys under field conditions.  相似文献

Baby spinach is a relatively new crop of commercial significance in South Africa with considerable health attributes. Three parallel trials to investigate its response to nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K) were conducted. N and P (0, 45, 75, 105, and 120 kg·ha?1) and K (0, 63, 85, 127, and 148 kg·ha?1) treatments were applied to baby spinach in a randomized block design with four replications. After the parallel trial, NPK combination trial was also done. The biomass yield, chlorophyll content, and leaf area index increased significantly with increase in N and P rates; K had no effect on the yield, chlorophyll content, stomatal conductance, and leaf area index. Yield and chlorophyll content peaked at 75 kg·ha?1 of N/P but growth was best optimized at the NPK combination of 45:45:60 kg·ha?1.  相似文献

Detailed information on specific species of non-aureus staphylococci (NAS) has become a necessity for effective udder health control programs in South Africa. The main objective of this preliminary study was to identify the different NAS species and strains present in dairy herds in South Africa using a cost-effective method. A further objective was to investigate the effects of cow risk factors and farming systems on the NAS isolates identified. A total of 214 NAS, isolated from milk collected from 17 South African dairy herds, were identified using three diagnostic tests (API Staph test, MALDI-TOF and 16s rRNA). There was a good observed agreement between the MALDI-TOF and 16S rRNA sequencing (92.2%) and a poor observed agreement between the MALDI-TOF and API Staph (25.7%). The genetic relatedness within species was investigated in 128 of these isolates using random polymorphic amplified deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) (RAPD), verified by multilocus sequence typing (MLST), and phylogenetic analysis and cow risk factors were investigated on species level. The main NAS species isolated were Staphylococcus chromogenes (75.2%), Staphylococcus epidermidis (9.4%) and Staphylococcus haemolyticus (8.9%). The RAPD test identified 34 Staphylococcus chromogenes, 13 Staphylococcus epidermidis and nine Staphylococcus haemolyticus strains, indicating genetic diversity amongst strains and herds. The presence of NAS intramammary infections was found to be significantly related to the farming systems, composite cow milk somatic cell count (SCC), parity and days in milk (DIM). Significantly more NAS were isolated from primiparous and from older cows. This knowledge could assist with the management of NAS on dairy farms.  相似文献

In mammals, it has been shown that halomethanes (HM) are bioactivated by enzymes such as CYP 2E1 and the theta isoform of GST to produce reactive metabolites. However, in fish, little information is available, although HM can form autochthonously in aquatic environments. This study assessed the effect of HM in dusky splitfin (Goodea gracilis) from three lakes of the Valley of Mexico by analysing specific HM biomarkers as well as a broad range of biomarkers. The concentration of HM was a function of its half-life (higher in deep waters), while its precursors and solar radiation are secondary factors that determine its concentration. The kidney showed higher basal metabolism than the liver, probably because of its function as a haematopoietic and filtration organ. Using integrated biological response version 2 (IBRv2), it was found that the hepatic and renal O2· content is a pro-oxidant force capable of inducing oxidative stress (ROOH, TBARS and RC=O). Early damage was found to be dependent on low concentrations of HM in Major Lake, whereas late damage was observed in fish exposed to higher concentrations of HM in Zumpango Lake and Ancient Lake. The activities of enzymes involved in antioxidant defence seemed to be inefficient. The quantitative assessment of biomarkers (ANOVA) and the estimate of parameter A obtained from IBRv2 provided different information. However, the data support the greater predictive power of IBRv2, but it requires a series of interrelated biomarkers to infer these possibilities. G. gracilis presents marked patterns of adaptation, which are dependant on the HM concentrations in environmental mixtures, although the response is complex and many toxicants could induce similar responses.  相似文献
