Objective This study investigated whether the bispectral index (BIS monitor) corresponded with the clinical assessment of anaesthetic depth in dogs. Study design Prospective clinical study. Animals Sixty‐five dogs undergoing anaesthesia for surgery. Methods Dogs were assigned to one of three different anaesthetic techniques. A three point scale was devised to determine the clinical depth of anaesthesia (CDA); CDA 1 represented light, CDA 2 surgical and CDA 3 excessive depth of anaesthesia. BIS values were recorded and CDA assessed at specific times and points throughout surgery. Data were statistically analysed using mixed model regression. Results Clinical depth of anaesthesia was assessed as CDA 1 on 68, 2 on 748 and 3 on four occasions. The BIS recorded for CDA 1 differed significantly from that for CDA 2 (p < 0.001). However, individual BIS values measured at light and surgical levels of anaesthesia overlapped considerably. The sensitivities and specificities calculated for BIS to diagnose CDA 1 compared to CDA 2 in the three anaesthetic protocols were 28–86% and 55–85%. The accompanying positive predictive value was 0.08–0.29 and the negative predictive value was 0.95–0.97. End‐tidal isoflurane concentrations (anaesthetic techniques 1 and 3) and propofol infusion (technique 2) at CDA 1 was significantly lower than those at CDA 2 (p = 0.001). Conclusions Although BIS values overall distinguished between CDA scores, the calculated specificities, sensitivities and predictive values were low, and there were anomalous results in individual cases. Clinical relevance The use of the BIS as the sole method to determine anaesthetic depth in dogs is imprudent.  相似文献

Scanty information on long-term soil organic carbon (SOC) dynamics hampers validation of SOC models in the tropics. We observed SOC content changes in a 16-year continuously cropped agroforestry experiment in Ibadan, south-western Nigeria. SOC levels declined in all treatments. The decline was most pronounced in the no-tree control treatments with continuous maize and cowpea cropping, where SOC levels dropped from the initial 15.4 to 7.3-8.0 Mg C ha−1 in the 0-12 cm topsoil in 16 years. In the two continuously cropped alley cropping (AC) systems, one with Leucaena leucocephala and one with Senna siamea trees, SOC levels dropped to 10.7-13.2 Mg C ha−1. Compared to the no-tree control treatments, an annual application of an additional 8.5 Mg ha−1 (dry matter) of plant residues, mainly tree prunings, led to an extra 3.5 Mg C ha−1 (∼0.2% C) in the 0-12 cm top soil after 11 years, and 4.1 Mg C ha−1 after 16 years. The addition of NPK fertilizer had little effect on the quantities of above-ground plant residues returned to the soil, and there was no evidence that the fertilizer affected the rate of SOC decomposition. The fact that both C3 and C4 plants returned organic matter to the soil in all cropping systems, but in contrasting proportions, led to clear contrasts in the 13C abundance in the SOC. This 13C information, together with the measured SOC contents, was used to test the ROTHC model. Decomposition was very fast, illustrated by the fact that we had to double all decomposition rate constants in the model in order to simulate the measured contrasts in SOC contents and δ13C between the AC treatments and the no-tree controls. We hypothesized (1) that the pruning materials from the legume trees and/or the extra rhizodeposition from the tree roots in the AC treatments accelerated the decomposition of the SOC present at the start of the experiment (true C-priming), and/or (2) that the physical protection of microbial biomass and metabolites by the clay fraction on this site, having a sandy top soil in which clay minerals are mainly of the 1:1 type, is lower than assumed by the model.  相似文献

In cropping systems with limited amounts of external inputs, the soil organic matter pool (SOM) may contribute significantly to plant nutrition. The impact of organic inputs on total SOM and particulate organic matter (POM) N contents as affected by soil type and the relationships between sources of N and maize N uptake were assessed for a set of alley cropping trials in the West- African moist savanna. The trials were established in Niaouli (Bénin Republic), in Glidji, Amoutchou, and Sarakawa (Togo), and in Bouaké and Ferkessédougou (Côte d‘ Ivoire). The total soil N content, averaged over all treatments and years, varied between 324 and 1140 mg N kg?1 soil. The POM-N content varied between 50 and 160 mg N kg?1 soil. The average proportion of soil N belonging to the POM pool ranged between 9% and 29%. This was significantly related to the annual N inputs from maize stover and prunings, when averaged over the different alley cropping treatments. The trial ‘age‘ also appeared to be related to the impact of the different treatments on the POM-N content. The Ferkessédougou soil contained a relatively higher proportion of total soil N in the POM pool because of its relatively high silt and clay content, compared to the other sites. The relative change in POM-N content between 1996 and the initial sampling was about twice the relative change in total soil N content. This suggests that N incorporated in the POM is relatively labile, compared to N incorporated in the other SOM fractions. Maize N uptake was related to the amount of add pruning-N (partial r2 of 27%), the rainfall during the growing season (partial r2 of 17%), the POM-N content (partial r2 of 14%), and to a lesser degree to the POM N concentration (partial r2 of 5%), the fertilizer N addition rate (partial r2 of 3%), and the silt and clay content of the soil (partial r2 of 3%). The POM-N content was shown to be influenced by organic matter additions and soil characteristics and to contribute significantly to maize N supply. This pool may be an important indicator for the soil fertility status of savanna soils.  相似文献

The impact of land use (unfertilized continuous maize cropping, unfertilized and fertilized alley cropping with maize, Gliricidia sepium tree fallow, natural fallow) on the soil organic matter (SOM) status and general soil fertility characteristics were investigated for a series of soils representative for the West African moist savanna zone. Three soils from the humid forest zone were also included. In an associated pot experiment, relationships between maize N and P uptake and SOM and general soil characteristics were developed. Soils under natural fallow contained the highest amount of organic C (1.72%), total N (0.158%), and had the highest effective cation exchange capacity (ECEC) [8.9 mEq 100 g–1 dry soil], while the Olsen P content was highest in the fertilized alley cropping plots (13.7 mg kg–1) and lowest under natural fallow (6.3 mg kg–1). The N concentration of the particulate organic matter (POM) was highest in the unfertilized alley cropping plots (2.4%), while the total POM N content was highest under natural fallow (370 mg N kg–1) and lowest in continuously cropped plots (107 mg N kg–1). After addition of all nutrients except N, a highly significant linear relationship (R 2=0.91) was observed between the total N uptake in the shoots and roots of 7-week-old maize and the POM N content for the savanna soils. POM in the humid forest soils was presumably protected from decomposition due to its higher silt and clay content. After addition of all nutrients except P, the total maize P uptake was linearly related to the Olsen P content. R 2 increased from 0.56 to 0.67 in a multiple linear regression analysis including the Olsen P content and clay content (which explained 11% of the variation in P uptake). Both the SOM status and N availability were shown to be improved in land-use systems with organic matter additions, while only the addition of P fertilizer could improve P availability. The potential of alley cropping systems supplied with a limited amount of fertilizer to restore crop productivity on a degraded site and to maintain crop productivity on a recently cleared, non-degraded site on ‘terre de barre‘ soils in Southern Bénin was investigated from 1994 to 1996. Leucaena leucocephala, Senna siamea and Gliricidia sepium were used as hedgerow species. Maize yields of the no-tree control plots dropped from the initial (1990) 401 kg ha−1 and 2181 kg ha−1 on the degraded and non-degraded sites, respectively, to 109 kg ha−1 and 1346 kg ha−1 in 1996, even with application of a minimal amount of mineral fertilizer. The alley cropping systems produced on average (mean of three treatments and three years) 107% more grain than the initial 1990 values on the degraded site and 11% less grain than the initial 1990 values on the non-degraded site. Especially the Senna and to a lesser degree the Leucaena treatment yielded consistently more grain than the control. The Senna trees contained a larger amount of N and produced more wood during the first pruning on the degraded site (155 kg N ha−1 and 14.0 ton fresh wood ha−1) than on the non-degraded site (49 kg N ha−1 and 6.6 ton fresh wood ha−1) most likely because of differences in subsoil fertility, as indicated by the higher clay, exchangeable bases, and N content between 60 and 125 cm cm. N accumulation and wood production by the Leucaena and Gliricidia trees was similar in both sites (82 and 36 kg N ha−1 and 4.6 and 9.3 ton fresh wood ha−1, respectively). When a limited amount of fertilizer is available, Senna appears to be the best choice as hedgerow species on sites with a relatively fertile subsoil. For other soils, a N2-fixing species may be a better choice. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date. The moist savanna of West-Africa is characterized by a wide range of climates and soil types. The impact of the biophysical environment on hedgerow N uptake, wood production and maize grain yield was assessed for three years in three alley cropping trials with a selected number of hedgerow species in Glidji (Southern Togo), Amoutchou (Central Togo), and Sarakawa (Northern Togo). Senna siamea hedgerows accumulated significantly more N in the first pruning in Glidji (129−138 kg N ha−1) and Sarakawa (102−185 kg N ha−1) than in Amoutchou (17–26 kg N ha−1). This difference in N uptake was attributed to the infertile subsoil in Amoutchou, which was sandy up to 1 m and had a shallow groundwater-table. The amount of N accumulated in the Gliricidia sepium biomass varied between 38 kg N ha−1 in Glidji and 142 kg N ha−1 in Amoutchou. Averaged over all species and sites, 9 to 29% and 9 to 39% of the annual N accumulation in the hedgerow biomass is incorporated in the second, respectively third pruning. The Gliricidia trees produced between 12 and 26 ton fresh matter ha−1 of wood and the Senna trees between 4 and 38 ton fresh matter ha−1. Maize grain yield in Glidji was not affected by treatments (3196 kg ha−1, on average). In Amoutchou, the highest grain production was observed in the Gliricidia treatment (2774 kg ha−1 vs 1007 kg ha−1 in the control), while in Sarakawa, the Gliricidia (3786 kg ha−1) and Senna (3842 kg ha−1) plots produced a greater grain yield than the control plots (2123 kg ha−1). Maize yield increase in the alley cropping systems relative to the control plots was related to the soil total N content. Top and sub-soil characteristics were shown to be an important modifier of the functioning of alley cropping systems and should be taken into account when deciding on whether to use alley cropping and when selecting the hedgerow species. OBJECTIVE: To determine the effects of three rates of dexmedetomidine (DMED) constant rate infusion (CRI) on overall tissue perfusion, isoflurane (ISO) requirements, haemodynamics and quality of recovery in canine surgical patients. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective, randomized, blinded clinical study. ANIMALS: Client-owned dogs presented for soft tissue or orthopaedic surgery. METHODS: Following intravenous (IV) pre-medication with DMED (5 microg kg(-1)) and buprenorphine (10 microg kg(-1)) and propofol induction, anaesthesia was maintained with ISO in oxygen/air supplemented with a DMED CRI (1, 2 or 3 microg kg(-1) hour(-1); groups 1, 2 and 3, respectively). Ventilation was controlled in all animals using intermittent positive pressure ventilation (IPPV). Monitoring included end-tidal (ET) gases, ECG, arterial blood pressure, body temperature and sequential arterial blood gas and lactate measurements. Quality of recovery was scored after intramuscular (IM) administration of atipamezole (ATI) (12.5 microg kg(-1)). Immediate post-operative analgesia was provided with carprofen and/or buprenorphine. An analysis of variance was conducted for repeated measurements obtained during 80 minutes after first incision. Categorical data were evaluated with Chi-square analyses. RESULTS: Arterial blood pressure remained stable and within clinically acceptable limits. Mean heart rate in group 2 was significantly lower than in group 1. The incidence of 2nd degree AV block type II was significantly higher in group 3. Mean arterial lactate concentrations remained below 2 mmol/L in all groups during the study, with a significant increase occurring during recovery compared with surgery for group 3. Mean e'ISO% was similar and <1% in all groups. Complete recovery from anaesthesia was achieved after ATI administration and was of good quality in all but three animals. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Dexmedetomidine CRI is a reliable and valuable adjunct to ISO anaesthesia in maintaining surgical anaesthesia in ASA I-II dogs. Data reported indicate adequate overall tissue perfusion and a low ISO requirement while enabling a smooth and rapid recovery following ATI. The DMED CRI of 1 microg kg(-1) hour(-1) following a loading dose of 5 microg kg(-1) produced the most favourable results.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To compare the performance of the Surgivet Non-Invasive Blood Pressure (NIBP) monitor V60046 with an invasive blood pressure (IBP) technique in anaesthetized dogs. STUDY DESIGN: A prospective study. ANIMALS: Thirty-four dogs, anaesthetized for a variety of procedures. METHODS: Various anaesthetic protocols were used. Invasive blood pressure measurement was made using a catheter in the femoral or the pedal artery. A cuff was placed on the contralateral limb to allow non invasive measurements. Recordings of arterial blood pressures (ABPs) were taken at simultaneous times for a range of pressures. For analysis, three pressure levels were determined: high [systolic blood pressure (SAP) > 121 mmHg], normal (91 mmHg < SAP < 120 mmHg) and low (SAP < 90 mmHg). Comparisons between invasive and non invasive measurements were made using Bland-Altmann analysis. RESULTS: The NIBP monitor consistently underestimated blood pressure at all levels. The lowest biases and greatest precision were obtained at low and normal pressure levels for SAP and mean arterial pressure (MAP). At low blood pressure levels, the biases +/- 95% confidence interval (CI) were 1.9 +/- 2.96 mmHg (SAP), 8.3 +/- 2.41 mmHg diastolic arterial pressure (DAP) and 3.5 +/- 2.09 mmHg (MAP). At normal blood pressure levels, biases and CI were: 1.2 +/- 2.13 mmHg (SAP), 5.2 +/- 2.32 mmHg (DAP) and 2.1 +/- 1.54 mmHg (MAP). At high blood pressure levels, the biases and CI were 22.7 +/- 5.85 mmHg (SAP), 5.5 +/- 3.13 mmHg (DAP) and 9.4 +/- 3.52 mmHg (MAP). In 90.6% of cases of hypotension (MAP < 70 mmHg), the low blood pressure was correctly diagnosed by the Surgivet. CONCLUSIONS: Measurement of blood pressure with the indirect monitor allowed detection of hypotension using either SAP or MAP. The most accurate readings were determined for MAP at hypotensive and normal levels. The monitor lacked accuracy at high pressures. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: When severe challenges to the cardiovascular system are anticipated, an invasive method of recording ABP is preferable. For routine usage, the Surgivet monitor provided a reliable and safe method of NIBP monitoring in dogs, thereby contributing to the safety of anaesthesia by providing accurate information about the circulation.  相似文献
