The aim of this study was to verify the in vivo effectiveness of pumpkin seed (Curcubita pepo Linnaeus, 1753) in naturally infected ostriches in the Cariri zone, semiarid region of Paraíba State, Brazil. Forty-eight ostriches were used, African Black breed, of 14 to 36 months old, naturally infected by gastrointestinal nematodes. These animals were divided into four groups of 12 ostriches. Group 1 consists of animals treated with 0.5 g/kg live weight (l. w.) of pumpkin seed meal; group 2 received 1 g/kg l. w. of pumpkin seed meal; group 3 was treated with Albendazole 5 %, at the dosage of 1 mL/10 kg l. w.; and Group 4 was the control group and do not received treatment. Groups 1 and 2 received the treatment for three consecutive days, orally, at intervals of 7 days, totaling nine administrations. The Albendazole 5 % was administered one time, at the beginning of the experiment, according to the manufacturer’s recommendations. The groups treated with pumpkin seed showed a significant decrease in egg counts per gram of feces (EPG), wherein group 2 (1 g/kg l. w.) was the most effective. The control and drug groups showed no reduction in EPG. The results of the present study demonstrate that the administration of pumpkin seed was effective in controlling gastrointestinal helminths in naturally infected ostriches. 相似文献

The present report addresses the development of cutaneous and ocular reactions possibly related to meloxicam administration in a dog. Based on clinical signs and absence of laboratory data compatible with the other differential diagnoses considered, the possibility of an adverse drug reaction (ADR) due to meloxicam was considered. Skin biopsy revealed haemorrhage of the superficial and deep dermis, associated with hyperplasia of endothelial cells and epidermal sloughing. Vasculitis in the deep dermis was also noted. Such lesions were considered compatible with an ADR. Although the owner was not aware of any previous allergic reaction to drugs, the animal had a clinical history of atopic dermatitis. Meloxicam is a nonsteroid anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) in the oxicam family, indicated for the control of inflammation and pain in acute and chronic musculoskeletal disorders in dogs. Although meloxicam is usually well tolerated, the present clinical case represents an alert to practitioners about the potential role of NSAIDS in ADRs in dogs with a history of allergic cutaneous diseases. 相似文献

Asian rust, caused by the fungus Phakopsora pachyrhizi, is the most severe disease currently threatening soybean crops in Brazil. The development of resistant cultivars is a top
priority. Genetic characterization of resistance genes is important for estimating the improvement when these genes are introduced
into soybean plants and for planning breeding strategies against this disease. Here, we infected an F2 population of 140 plants derived from a cross between ‘An-76’, a line carrying two resistance genes (Rpp2 and Rpp4), and ‘Kinoshita’, a cultivar carrying Rpp5, with a Brazilian rust population. We scored six characters of rust resistance (lesion color [LC], frequency of lesions having
uredinia [%LU], number of uredinia per lesion [NoU], frequency of open uredinia [%OU], sporulation level [SL], and incubation
period [IP]) to identify the genetic contributions of the three genes to these characters. Furthermore, we selected genotypes
carrying these three loci in homozygosis by marker-assisted selection and evaluated their genetic effect in comparison with
their ancestors, An-76, PI230970, PI459025, Kinoshita and BRS184. All three genes contributed to the phenotypes of these characters
in F2 population and when pyramided, they significantly contributed to increase the resistance in comparison to their ancestors.
Rpp2, previously reported as being defeated by the same rust population, showed a large contribution to resistance, and its resistance
allele seemed to be recessive. Rpp5 had the largest contribution among the three genes, especially to SL and NoU. Only Rpp5 showed a significant contribution to LC. No QTLs for IP were detected in the regions of the three genes. We consider that
these genes could contribute differently to resistance to soybean rust, and that genetic background plays an important role
in Rpp2 activity. All three loci together worked additively to increase resistance when they were pyramided in a single genotype
indicating that the pyramiding strategy is one good breeding strategy to increase soybean rust resistance. 相似文献

Leprosis, caused by citrus leprosis virus (CiLV) and transmitted by the tenuipalpid mite Brevipalpus phoenicis, is one of the most important viruses of citrus in the Americas. Sweet oranges (Citrus sinensis L. Osb.) are highly susceptible to CiLV, while mandarins (C. reticulata Blanco) and some of their hybrids have higher tolerance or resistance to this disease. The mechanisms involved in the resistance
and its inheritance are still largely unknown. To study the quantitative trait loci (QTL; quantitative trait loci) associated
with the resistance to CiLV, progeny analyses were established with 143 hybrid individuals of ‘Pêra’ sweet orange (C. sinensis L. Osb.) and ‘Murcott’ tangor (C. reticulata Blanco × C. sinensis L. Osb.) from controlled crossings. Disease assessment of the hybrid individuals was conducted by infesting the plants with
viruliferous mites in the field. The experiment consisted of a randomized completely block design with ten replicates. The
evaluated phenotypic traits were incidence and severity of the disease on leaves and branches, for a period of 3 years. The
MapQTL™ v.4.0 software was used for the identification and location of possible QTL associated with resistance to CiLV on
a genetic map obtained from 260 AFLP and 5 RAPD markers. Only consistent QTLs from different phenotypic traits and years of
evaluation, with the critical LOD scores to determine the presence or absence of each QTL calculated through the random permutation
test, were considered. A QTL was observed and had a significant effect on the phenotypic variation, ranging from 79.4 to 84%
depending on which trait (incidence or severity) was assessed. This suggests that few genes are involved in the genetic resistance

The main objective of this study was to estimate the selection accuracy and to predict the genetic gain in cassava breeding using genomic selection methodologies. We evaluated 358 cassava genotypes for the following traits: shoot weight (SW), fresh root yield (FRY), starch fraction amylose content (AC), dry matter content (DMC), and starch yield (S-Y). Genotyping was performed using 390 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), which were used as covariates in the random regression-best linear unbiased prediction model for genomic selection. The heritability values detected by markers for the SW, FRY, AC, DMC, and S-Y traits were 0.25, 0.25, 0.03, 0.20, and 0.26, respectively. Because the low heritability detected for AC, this trait was eliminated from further analysis. Using only the most informative SNPs (118, 92, 56, and 97 SNPs for SW, FRY, DMC, and S-Y, respectively) we observed higher selection accuracy which were 0.83, 0.76, 0.67, and 0.77, respectively to SW, FRY, DMC, and S-Y. With these levels of accuracy and considering a selection cycle reduced by half the time, the theoretical gains with genomic selection compared to phenotypic selection for DMC, FRY, and SW would be 39.42 %, 56.90 %, and 73.96 %, respectively. These results indicate that in the cassava, genomic selection can substantially speed up selection cycles, thereby increasing gains per unit time. Although there are high expectations for incorporating this strategy into breeding programs, we still need to validate the model for other traits and evaluate whether the selection accuracy can be improved using more SNPs. 相似文献

Silicon (Si) and salicylic acid (SA) foliar applications can benefit cotton yield especially if there is stress during cultivation. The objective of this study was to evaluate the foliar application of Si and SA on the photosynthetic variables and cotton yield. The experimental design used was randomized complete block, constituted by Si foliar application in potassium and sodium balanced silicate form (0 and 3.6?g L?1 of Si) and SA (0 and 210?mg L?1). The treatments were applied in three leaf sprays during the reproductive stage that coincided with water stress in tillage. Therefore, the Si foliar application associated with SA favors the physiological variables, increasing the photosynthesis, stomatal conductance and water use efficiency reflecting on the increase of cotton yield. 相似文献

Guava is an important fruit species but poorly studied for the effect of humic substances and soil mulching on its nutrition and fruit production. Thus, an experiment was conducted to evaluate the nutritional status and fruit production of guava as a function of humic substances and soil mulching in Brazilian semiarid. The experimental design was in randomized blocks with treatments distributed in a factorial arrangement (5?×?2) referring to humic substances doses (0, 10, 20, 30 and 40?mL of Humitec plant?1) and organic mulching (with and without organic mulching). Nutritional status of guava is affected by humic substances and soil mulching. The use of humic substances combined with soil mulching promotes optimum supplies of nitrogen, phosphorus, calcium, sulfur, boron and iron, but not calcium, copper and zinc. Under sandy soil and semiarid climate it is possible to recommend 40?mL?L?1 of humic substances and soil mulching. 相似文献

Pansteatitis is caused by the consumption of high levels of unsaturated fatty acids and/or the insufficient intake of vitamin E, leading to inflammation of adipose tissue. This disease has been related to fish-based diets. However, non-conventional diets must also be considered. The authors present case records of two cats with pansteatitis, for which diet consisted mostly of pig's brain, comparing them with eight cases of disease in cats eating mainly oily fish. Cats fed pig's brain did not show clinical signs, while cats eating oily fish presented inappetence, depression, reluctance to move and subcutaneous nodules painful on palpation. Cats eating pig's brain did not show any change in blood parameters, while cats fed oily fish presented leukocytosis and anaemia. Histological examination confirmed pansteatitis in all cats, independently of the diet. All animals except one of the cats eating oily fish recovered after medical treatment and change of the feeding regime. 相似文献

Biofilm formation is considered a selective advantage for staphylococci mastitis isolates, facilitating bacterial persistence in the udder. It requires attachment to mammary epithelium, proliferation and accumulation of cells in multilayers and enclosing in a polymeric matrix, being regulated by several loci. As biofilm formation can proceed through different pathways and time ranges, its detection may differ according to the time of observation. This study aimed at evaluating the time course evolution of biofilm production in Staphylococcus aureus (n = 26) and Staphylococcus epidermidis (n = 29) mastitis isolates by Fluorescent In Situ Hybridisation. Biofilm-forming ability increased with incubation time for both species: for S. aureus, 34.6%, 69.2% and 80.8% of the isolates were able to produce biofilm at 24, 48 and 72 h, respectively. For S. epidermidis, 44.8%, 62.1% and 75.9% of the isolates were biofilm-positive at 24, 48 and 72 h, respectively. No significant difference was found between species at each time point (Friedman's test, p > 0.05). For S. aureus, although a significant difference was found between 24 and 48 h (Wilcoxon matched paired test, p < 0.05), no significant difference was found between 24 and 48 h (p > 0.05). For S. epidermidis, significant differences were found between each time point (p < 0.05). Bacterial biofilms may impair eradication of chronic mastitis, rendering antibiotherapy less effective. Detection of biofilm-forming ability in mastitis isolates may provide useful information for the establishment of a more adequate therapeutic regimen, in view of the antimicrobial concentrations required for bacterial control. However, it is essential that biofilm formation time course is taken into consideration. 相似文献
