This paper examines differences in the management styles of a purposive sample of almond and winegrape growers in California’s Central Valley, including participants and non-participants in biologically integrated farming systems programs. Using Q methodology, we elicited rankings of economic and social values and goals as they relate to farm production, environmental stewardship, family and community, and leisure. These rankings led to three distinct management styles, labeled as Environmental Stewards, Production Maximizers, and Networking Entrepreneurs. The results demonstrate that farmers make decisions following diverse management strategies and suggest that outreach programs aimed at advancing biologically based farming practices must address these differences to be most effective. 相似文献

In intensive integrated crop-livestock farming systems, the surplus of N at the farm scale may be large and reflects on the N balance at the field scale. A study was conducted to assess the N fertilizer efficiency in four private farms in intensively cropped areas of NW Italy, and to monitor the effects of agricultural practices on the mineral N concentration of the soil solution, sampled every 2 weeks for 2 years and considered as an indicator of potential leaching. Two cultivation systems were compared in each farm, one involving continuous maize rotation, the other assuring a continuous soil cover (permanent meadow or winter cereal-maize double cropping system). The fertilization level in the arable crops was high (369–509 kg N ha−1 year−1) compared to the crop removals, and resulted in a low efficiency, as indicated by the four examined efficiency indexes (calculated N surplus, N removal-fertilizer ratio, N apparent recovery, N use efficiency). The soil-water-nitrate concentration showed large temporal variations in the range of 1–150 mg l−1 for five out of the eight cropping situations, while concentrations smaller than 10 mg l−1 were always recorded in the meadows and in one of the four soils (Aeric epiaquept). The fertilizer management that characterized each cropping system affected the soil-mineral-nitrate content in shallow arable soils. The longer soil cover duration in double-cropping systems did not result in a reduction of soil N compared to maize as a single crop, not even in winter (the bare-soil intercropping period in maize-based systems). However, the temporal oscillations of the concentration were buffered by the crop cover duration and by the presence of a shallow water table (1 m deep) in the soil profile. The average nitrate content of the soil could be predicted by the N uptake of the crop, the N removal–fertilizer ratio, the soil pH and sand content, however no simple explanatory relationship was found with the experimental factors. Hence, in farm conditions, in the absence of sufficient data for a deterministic model approach, the target of reducing the risk of leaching should be achieved by maximizing the fertilizer efficiency. 相似文献

Brassica vegetables are an important dietary source of glucosinolates (GLs), whose breakdown products exhibit anticancer activity. The protective properties of Brassicaceae are believed to be due to the inhibition of Phase-I or induction of Phase-II xenobiotic metabolizing enzymes (XMEs), thus enhancing carcinogen clearance. To study whether GLs affect XMEs and the role of their chemical structure, we focused on two alkylthio GLs differing in the oxidation degree of the side chain sulfur. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were supplemented (per oral somministration by gavage) with either glucoraphasatin (4-methylthio-3-butenyl GL; GRH) or glucoraphenin (4-methylsulfinyl-3-butenyl GL; GRE), at 24 or 120 mg/kg body weight in a single or repeated fashion (daily for four consecutive days), and hepatic microsomes were prepared for XME analyses. Both GLs were able to induce XMEs, showing different induction profiles. While the inductive effect was stronger after multiple administration of the higher GRH dosage, the single lower GRE dose was the most effective in boosting cytochrome P-450 (CYP)-associated monooxygenases and the postoxidative metabolism. CYP3A1/2 were the most affected isoforms by GRH treatment, whereas GRE induced mainly CYP1A2 supported oxidase. Glutathione S-transferase increased up to approximately 3.2-fold after a single (lower) GRE dose and UDP-glucuronosyl transferase up to approximately 2-fold after four consecutive (higher) GRH doses. In conclusion, the induction profile of these GLs we found is not in line with the chemopreventive hypothesis. A study of the real possibilities of carbohydrate profiles and chemometrics to characterize the botanical origin of honey from a single geographical area, the Province of Soria (Spain), is presented. To this end, 14 carbohydrates were quantified using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with pulsed amperometric detection (PAD) in 77 natural honeys, the botanical origins of which were ling, spike lavender, French lavender, thyme, forest, and multifloral. Principal component analysis has been employed as a first approach to characterize the honey samples analyzed, showing similarities between spike lavender and multifloral honeys. The best discrimination among groups is obtained when four canonical discriminant analyses were carried out sequentially, origin by origin, achieving an overall percentage of success of 90% following cross-validation. 相似文献

We investigated the characteristics and variability of radial growth patterns and the occurrence of growth releases in dominant
trees in two old-growth forests in eastern Finland, one dominated by Picea abies and the other by Pinus sylvestris. The dominant trees exhibited high variation in radial growth patterns suggesting that the trees had experienced very different
growing conditions and competitive situations during their lifespans. Based on visual evaluation, five types of radial growth
patterns were distinguished: descending, even, unimodal (one peak in the growth rate), bimodal (two peaks in the growth rate
with an intermediate depression) and fuzzy (no clear pattern). One or more growth releases were detected in 18% of the sampled
Picea and in 21% of the Pinus trees. In both the Picea- and the Pinus-dominated sites, the temporal distribution of growth releases was relatively even, except for a moderate peak in 1855–1860.
This suggests that small-scale disturbances have been the predominant disturbance mode in both sites during the last 150 years.
We conclude that the detected variability in radial growth patterns likely reflects the overall small-scale heterogeneity
of structure and developmental processes that are typical of old-growth forests. 相似文献

Angiogenesis, the growth of new blood vessels from the pre-existing vasculature is of physiological and pathological importance. Substantial data over the last decade has implicated uncontrolled angiogenesis with various pathological states. Vascular endothelial growth factors (VEGFs) play a critical role in its regulation, and have become one of the most interesting anti-angiogenesis targets. We have investigated the anti-angiogenic potential of plant extracts in a preliminary ELISA screening. The n-BuOH extract obtained from the leaves of Monnina obtusifolia (Polygalaceae) demonstrated an inhibition of VEGF-A or Placental Growth Factor interaction with Flt-1 (VEGF receptor 1), with an inhibition over 50% in particular for VEGF-A/Flt-1 interaction at a concentration of 500 μg/mL. Successively fractionation of the bioactive n-BuOH extracts of M. obtusifolia aerial parts led to the isolation of six new compounds, 1-O-(4-hydroxy-2-methylene-butanoic acid)-6-O-β-d-(4-hydroxy-2-methylene-butanoyl)-glucopyranose (1), 1-O-(isopentenyl)-6-O-β-d-(4-hydroxy-2-methylene-butanoyl)-glucopyranose (2), 1-O-(4-hydroxy-2-methylene-butanoic acid)-6-O-β-d-(isovaleroyl)-glucopyranose (3), 1-O-(3-methylbut-3enyl)-6-O-β-d-(isovaleroyl)-glucopyranose (4), two new sucrose esters, 3,4-O-β-d-di-feruloyl-fructofuranosyl-6-O-α-d-(p-coumaroyl)-glucopyranoside (5), and 3,4-O-β-d-di-feruloyl-fructofuranosyl-6-O-α-d-(caffeoyl)-glucopyranoside (6), together with known flavonoids. Their structures were established on the basis of detailed spectral analysis. Since none of the isolated compounds showed a relevant inhibition of VEGFs, the biological activity observed for the butanolic extract might be due to the presence of a combination of compounds acting synergistically. 相似文献
