Earthworms recorded during 1989–1993 across 15 soil management treatments, comprising three different tillagexthree organic amendments (bare, farmyard manure, and rice straw) and six perennial ley treatments, belonged to two endogeic species, Octochaetona phillotti (Michaelsen) and Lampito mauritii Kinberg, while in a nearby undisturbed natural revegetation area three species were found, including the above two and Octonochaeta rosea (Stephenson). The earthworm biomass showed significant temporal and spatial variations and was higher during the post monsoon period than in the early rainy season. No worm biomass was recorded during the dry season. In the tillage and organic amendment treatments, the biomass was drastically reduced from September 1989 to September 1991 after the application of carbofuran and some herbicides, and was significantly reduced during these two years compared to that of 1992. The maximum monthly earthworm biomass ranged between 2.5 and 17.9 g m-2 across the treatments and increased several-fold in the nearby natural revegetation area (75.9 g m-2). It significantly increased in perennial ley treatments compared to annual treatments with organic amendments. Thus the earthworm biomass varied significantly (P<0.01) across the 15 treatments, indicating discernible effects of soil management.Visiting Scientist (under the Rockefeller Foundation Environmental Research Fellowship in International Agriculture)  相似文献

Human adipose tissue samples obtained during autopsies in 6 Canadian Great Lakes municipalities were analyzed for chlorobenzenes, polychlorobiphenyls, and organohalogen pesticide residues. The frequency of occurrence and the range and mean for 28 organohalogen residues are reported for male and female donors in each municipality. Overall mean residue values in females were significantly higher than those in males for hexachlorobenzene, beta-HCH, p,p'-DDE,p,p'-DDD + o,p'-DDT, and p,p'-DDT. The means and ranges of residue values were similar to those reported in previous Canadian surveys.  相似文献

We examine the relationship between the number of bird species and environment within 500 000 ha of eucalypt forests in south-eastern New South Wales, Australia. Birds were surveyed at 39 sites within 31 eucalypt communities, which were, in turn, scored by altitude, temperature, rainfall, basal areas of trees and levels of the nutrients nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and magnesium in the eucalypt foliage.

Ninety bird species were recorded. Numbers per site, averaged over the whole sample period, ranged between 20 and 38 over all surveys, 24 and 42 in ‘summer’ (October to March) when migrant species were present, and 13 and 38 in ‘winter’ (April to September). A forward stepwise Poisson regression model was used to fit bird species richness to the environmental variables. Over all surveys and in ‘summer’, foliar magnesium and tree basal area (including the basal area of dead trees) were significantly (positive) correlated with the number of bird species. In ‘winter’ the correlations were with altitude and temperature (both negative), presumably the result of emigration of species that avoid cold weather, and tree basal area (positive).

The positive association of number of species over all surveys and in ‘summer’ with tree basal area, including dead trees, and foliar magnesium may index the level of forest maturity and productivity.

Forest management directed solely to timber production reduces the basal area and the number of dead trees and may thereby reduce bird species richness permanently.

A methodology is offered, based on the relationship between the physical environment and the more productive eucalypt communities, for determining forest areas containing the most species of birds.  相似文献

An iterative analysis was used to identify the number and area of pastoral properties needed to contain the full range of natural environments (land systems) in part of western New South Wales. A minimum of 32 properties (3·1% of total number) and 7980 km2 (5·7% of total area) was required to represent every land system at least once. Full representation required a greater overall number and area when the analysis began with properties already acquired for conservation. Excluding land systems atypical of the study area did not greatly reduce the number and area of properties required. Complete representation of land systems in each geographical subdivision in which they occur required a much greater overall number and area of properties than when the analysis was run for the study area as a whole. The algorithm used in this study produced very similar results to other iterative analyses applied to reserve selection in Australia.  相似文献

A collaborative study was performed in 13 laboratories to validate an enzyme immunoassay (EIA) procedure for rapid detection of Salmonella in foods. The EIA was compared with the standard culture procedure for detection of Salmonella in 6 food types: ground black pepper, soy flour, dried whole eggs, milk chocolate, nonfat dry milk, and raw deboned turkey. Uninoculated and inoculated samples were included in each food group analyzed. There was no significant difference in the proportion of samples positive by the EIA and culture procedures at the 5% level for any of the 6 foods. The enzyme immunoassay screening method has been adopted official first action as a rapid screening method for detection of Salmonella.  相似文献

The effect of peat moisture status on N, S, Ca, and Mg release to drainage waters was examined using a constant temperature laboratory incubation. Peat samples originating from drained and undrained sites in West Sedgemoor, Somerset Levels, SW England were compared. Three treatments: long term waterlogging, aeration, and fluctuating aeration and waterlogging were imposed on all peat samples. These treatments resulted in different rates and total amounts of N, S, Ca, and Mg release, with waterlogging resulting in highest solute release. The total amounts and rates of release of S, Ca, and Mg from peat that was undrained prior to incubation always exceeded that from drained site peat samples regardless of peat moisture status. Although the degree of waterlogging or aeration affected the rate and total amount of watersoluble N released during incubation, there was no difference between peat that was drained, and peat that was undrained, prior to incubation. Drainage of currently undrained and waterlogged peat in West Sedgemoor will result in the transfer of high concentrations of S, Ca, and Mg from the peat to the drainage ditch.  相似文献

DNA-DNA 杂交结果表明,水稻白叶枯病黄单胞菌总 DNA 中存在着与甘蓝黑腐病黄单胞菌致病因子调控基因(rpf 基因)具有同源性的 DNA 外段.应用广谱性寄主载体pLAFRI,在大肠杆菌中建立了水稻白叶枯病黄单胞菌野生型菌株 T3000的基因文库.从文库中筛选到与 rpf 基因具有同源性的克隆 pGXN3000,将重组质粒 pGXN3000通过三亲本接合转入甘蓝黑腐病黄单胞菌 rpf 基因突变体,发现 pGXN3000能互补甘蓝黑腐病黄单胞菌 rpf突变体,恢复其致病性胞外酶和胞外多糖的产生及致病性.转座子 Tn5诱变,缺失分析及DNA-DNA 杂交实验结果表明,重组质粒 pGXN3000中确实含有与甘蓝黑腐病黄单胞菌编码。双组份调控系统”蛋白的 rpfC 基因功能相同的基因,此基因被定位于 pGXN3000中的3kb BamHl 片段中。  相似文献

An analytical procedure was developed for determination of benzene in polypropylene food packaging and was adapted for determination of benzene in commercial paraffin waxes intended for food-contact use. The polymer was dissolved in hexadecane at 150 degrees C. The wax was melted in an 80 degrees C oven. A simple helium-sparging apparatus was used to remove the volatile chemical from the polymer or wax. The contaminant was collected in methanol, distilled water was added, and the resulting solution was analyzed by headspace gas chromatography. The instrument was equipped with a 30 m fused silica open tubular capillary column and a photoionization detector. Average recoveries of benzene from polymer and paraffin wax at low parts-per-billion concentrations were 63 and 70%, respectively. Limits of detection and quantitation for analysis of polypropylene were 8 and 17 ppb, respectively; the limit of quantitation for analysis of paraffin wax was 2 ppb. In several commercial polypropylene products examined, benzene levels ranged from none detected to 426 ppb. In 3 commercial waxes examined, concentrations of 16-73 ppb benzene were determined. The presence of benzene was confirmed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry.  相似文献

Pesticide residues in foods are reported for the 5-year period 1978-1982 [fiscal years (FY) 78-82]. Results were compiled from the 2 complementary elements that comprise the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) program for monitoring pesticide residues in foods. Under regulatory monitoring, which focuses on residues in raw agricultural commodities, a total of 49,877 samples (30,361 domestic and 19,516 import) that included fresh fruits and vegetables, grains, milk and dairy products, seafoods, and a variety of processed foods were analyzed. No residues were found in about 55 and 44% of the domestic and import samples, respectively. About 3% of the domestic and 7% of the import samples were classed as violative. Data from the Total Diet Study, which is conducted to determine dietary intakes of a variety of chemicals, showed that residues of 42 pesticides were found in 1044 composites of table-ready foods. Results of FDA's monitoring for FY78-82 demonstrate that pesticide residue levels in the U.S. food supply were generally well below regulatory limits, and dietary intakes were manyfold lower than the Acceptable Daily Intakes established by international agencies.  相似文献

Abstract. Crop growth on strongly weathered soils is often limited by soil compaction in addition to aluminium toxicity and/or calcium deficiency. This study examines the effects of subsoiling, lime and gypsum on penetrometer resistance, acidity, aluminium and calcium levels and cotton ( Gossypium hirsutum L.) root growth on soils transitional between Cecil and Appling series (clayey, kaolinitic, thermic Typic Hapludults) in the Piedmont region of Georgia, USA. The main plots were subsoiled to depths of 0.35 or 0.80 m or untreated. Dolomitic limestone (0 or 4.03 t per hectare on subplots) and phosphogypsum (0 or 10 t per hectare on sub-subplots) were incorporated into the surface soil (0.15 m). Deep subsoiling (0.80 m depth) decreased penetrometer resistance at 0.3–0.5 m depth and increased yield in two of three years, but there was no response to shallow subsoiling (0.35 m depth). Lime increased yield when surface soil water pH prior to amendment was less than a Cate-Nelson critical value of 4.6. Gypsum moved downward much more rapidly than lime, increasing soil solution calcium ion activity to a depth of 0.8 m within 5 months of application. There were differences in clay content between replicate plots and calcium movement was faster where the clay content was less. Yield responses to gypsum in 1986 were attributed to increased root growth below 0.2 m resulting from the increased calcium ion activity. Yield response to gypsum in limed sub-subplots was significant only in 1986.  相似文献
