Purpose

Plant residue decomposition, porosity status and biological activity in heavily polluted with Zn, Pb and Cd post-mining soils were investigated in relation to natural soil in the area. The study was carried out on soils from different ages and vegetation cover. This work aimed at studying the influence of heavy metal concentration on the humus layer formation with the help of micromorphological methods.

Materials and methods

Soil samples were collected from 5 sites situated in the Zn and Pb mining area and from one site located in the vicinity but unchanged by mining works. In each site, a representative area of about 100 m2 was selected and soil samples from 5 randomly selected plots were taken from surface and subsurface layers. Chemical, micromorphological and biological analyses were conducted in order to evaluate humus transformations occurring in studied soils and to establish the main factors affecting these processes. In images taken from thin sections, we separated and measured areas covered by decomposed organic matter, plant residues and pores.

Results and discussion

Mine soils had similar pH soil values (6.7–7.1); only one natural soil was moderately acid (pH = 5.6). The soils differed in SOM content, from 30.84 to 168 g kg?1. Mine soils were contaminated with heavy metals up to 10,980 mg Zn, 5436 mg Pb and 95.2 mg Cd·kg?1. The largest amount of the medium-sized and large plant residues (18.4 and 20.5%) were found in post-mining soil covered with xerothermic flora typical of metalliferous areas. The lowest amount of small residues was found in post-mining forest soil. The diversified accumulation of plant residues reflected the organic matter decomposition ratio varying from 1.64 (post-mining soil 15% covered with calamine flora) to 62.7% (natural soil covered with forest). In the natural soil, rounded pores prevailed, while in post-mining soils, planar pores dominated. Invertase activity ranged from 1.64 to 154.2 mg of inverted sugar, and carbon of microbial biomass ranged from 5.94 to 731.2 μg g?1. Both characteristics were related to the amount of organic matter regardless of the heavy-metal pollution.

Conclusions

The results showed that a decomposition ratio was lower in mining soils than in the natural soil, and large plant residues were accumulated in surface layers. Microbial activity was more influenced by plant cover density and diversity than by heavy metal concentration. The evolution in the organic matter form and pore shapes with the soil age and the vegetation cover was observed.

The objective of the study was to determine the effect of the experimental factors on the seed quality of three winter oilseed rape cultivars. The following factors were studied: I-three winter oilseed rape morphotypes: population, hybrid restored characterised by a semi-dwarf growth pattern, hybrid restored characterised by a conventional growth pattern; II-two sowing methods: a spacing of 22.5?cm, a spacing of 45.0?cm; III-four types of biostimulants: control-no biostimulants, the biostimulant Tytanit®, Asahi®SL, Silvit®. Seed samples were subjected to chemical analysis to determine: crude oil, total protein and crude fibre. Natural stimulants of plant growth and development contributed to an increase in crude oil ranging from 7.4 to 9.5?g?kg–1 d.m., on average, compared with control. The biostimulants applied did not affect total protein content which was, however, affected by meteorological conditions in individual study years as well as the genetic factor. Biostimulants increased crude fibre content compared with control.  相似文献

Among Vaccinium species, blueberries (Vaccinium myrtillus L.) and lingonberries (Vaccinium vitis-idaea) are popular in the human diet. In this study, total phenolic, total flavonoid and total monomeric anthocyanin contents in the ethanol-water extracts of blueberry and lingonberry fruits grown wild in the forests in the central region of Poland were assayed. Antioxidant activities of the extracts from each plant were also evaluated for scavenging ability on 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radicals and reducing power by cupric reducing antioxidant capacity (CUPRAC) method. Total phenolics in the blueberry extracts ranged from 4.58 to 5.28 mg GAE CE/g fw. The extracts from lingonberry fruits contained higher total contents of phenolic compounds (5.82–7.60 mg GAE/g fw) as well as total flavonoids (5.22–6.47 μmol CE/g fw) than those from blueberries (3.74–4.18 μmol CE/g fw). For the total monomeric anthocyanin contents, the blueberry extracts presented significantly higher values (3.01–3.93 mg cyanidin-3-glucoside (C3G) equivalent/g fw) in comparison to the lingonberry extracts (0.32–0.47). Blueberry extracts exhibited higher antioxidant activity measured by both assays in comparison to lingonberry extracts. Water extracts from fresh and dried fruits also exhibited significant antioxidant activities for both types of berries. Considering the health benefits that have been associated with polyphenolic consumption, these fruits could appear as a good source of this group of phytochemical compounds for their direct consumption or their use as ingredients for the design of new food products or food supplements.  相似文献

Investigations were carried out to assess air and potable waterpollution with selected highly bioactive organic compounds,including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), in theenvironment of the Silesian Rehabilitation Centre, Repty ?l?skie, Poland. The results were compared with those forother towns of the region.Solid phase extraction (SPE) and capillary gas chromatography(CGC) with flame ionization detector (FID) and mass spectrometer(MS) were used for a qualitative-quantitative analysis. Moreover, water concentration of calcium, magnesium ions andnitrite ions were measured by spectrophotometric methods. Thequality of the Centre environment air and water found to besatisfactory and better than that in the other sampling sites which were studied for all the parameters.

Brookfield viscosimetry, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and measurements of the texture strength of gels formed with CaCl2 and the mechanical and barrier properties of the film were applied in studies of gel formation and structural and mechanical properties of gels and films prepared using calcium caseinate (CC)-whey protein isolate (WPI)-glycerol (1:1:1), control, and irradiated with 60Co gamma rays using a 32 kGy dose. The irradiated gels have appeared to be more "fine-stranded" as compared to the more "particulate" control gels and lead to the formation of more rigid films with improved mechanical strength and barrier properties. This results from cross-linking and the modification of protein conformations were induced by irradiation, in particular the increase in the beta-sheet and beta-strand contents. Structural modifications taking place in CC-WPI composition are related to modifications taking place separately in CC and WPI. Improvement of the properties of the films after irradiation corresponds to the increased density of the cross-linked material because no change in the porosity of the films was observed by TEM.  相似文献

Perchlorate has been detected in U.S. milk samples from many different states. Applying data from a recently reported 9-week experiment in which 16 Holstein dairy cows were administered perchlorate allowed us to derive an equation for the dose-response relationship between perchlorate concentrations in feed/drinking water and its appearance in milk. Examination of background concentrations of perchlorate in the total mixed ration (TMR) fed in addition to the variable dose supplied to treated cows as a ruminal infusate revealed that cows receive significant and variable exposure to perchlorate from the TMR. Weekly examination of the TMR disclosed that a change in ingredients midway through the experiment caused a significant (78%) change in TMR perchlorate concentration. Analyses of the ingredients comprising the TMR revealed that 41.9% of the perchlorate came from corn silage, 22.9% came from alfalfa hay and 11.7% was supplied by sudan grass. Finally, USDA Food and Nutrition Survey data on fluid milk consumption were used to predict potential human exposure from milk that contained concentrations of perchlorate observed in our previous dosing study. The study suggests that reducing perchlorate concentration in dairy feed may reduce perchlorate concentrations in milk as well as the potential to reduce human exposure to perchlorate in milk.  相似文献

The effect of ammonium nitrate fertilization on ureide synthesis, xylem transport and assimilation was examined in four week old nodulated soybean plants. In nodules the activity of 5‐phosphoribosylpyrophosphate amidotransferase, a key enzyme of ureide biosynthesis, declined 75%, while enzymes of purine oxidation (xanthine dehydrogenase and uricase) showed no response to nitrogen treatment. Xylem sap concentrations of allantoin and allantoate, as compared to untreated controls, were reduced by about 85% and 65%, respectively. Despite the substantial decline in ureide synthesis and transport, allantoate concentration in leaves of ammonium nitrate treated plants increased by about three‐fold. No ureide accumulation was observed in leaf tissue following a suppression of ureide formation in nodules by allopurinol, an inhibitor of xanthine dehydrogenase. In the pathway of ureide assimilation in leaves, application of inorganic nitrogen had no effect on activity of allantoinase, but caused a 50% drop in activity of allantoate amidohydrolase. Therefore, the observed accumulation of allantoate in soybean leaves in response to nitrogen fertilization was due to new ureide synthesis in plant tissues other than nodules, or to retardation of ureide degradation in leaves caused by the alternative source of nitrogen.  相似文献

The effect of feeding frequency (one, three, and continuous feeding), feed ration (0.2, 0.5, 0.8% of total fish biomass), and feeding per se on the oxygen consumption (OC, mg O2 kg−1 h−1) and ammonia excretion (AE, mg TAN kg−1 h−1) of juvenile tench (body weight 15–19 g) and variations in these parameters in daily cycles were examined. Fish metabolism was studied in a recirculating system (rearing tanks of 0.2 m3, water temperature 23 °C). It was found that oxygen consumption and ammonia excretion depended significantly on feed ration. An increase of feed ration from 0.2 to 0.8% of fish biomass caused an increase of OC and AE from 126.80 mg O2 kg−1 h−1 and 1.95 mg TAN kg−1 h−1 to 187.35 mg O2 kg−1 h−1 and 8.80 mg TAN kg−1 h−1 (p<0.05). There was no dependence between feeding frequency and the mean rate of oxygen consumption. However, the relationship between feeding frequency and ammonia excretion by juvenile tench was statistically significant (p<0.05). Feeding frequency significantly affected daily fluctuations of AE and OC. It was found that diurnal variations in metabolic rates were strictly related to tench feeding, and the daily variations of AE were significantly higher than OC.  相似文献
