Electrogoniometry was used qualitively and quantitatively to assess the movements of the normal and pathologic metacarpophalangeal joints of selected horses. A total of 4 Thoroughbreds, 1 normal and 3 with clinical and radiographic changes in the metacarpophalangeal joints of 1 limb, were evaluated at the walk and trot. Goniograms of the affected joints were compared with those of the normal horse and the normal contralateral metacarpophangeal joint. Qualitative asymmetry was recognized on the goniograms, and the ranges of motion were quantified and related to the clinical and radiologic observations.  相似文献

Chlorsulfuron (2-chloro-N-[(4-methoxy-6-methyl-1,3,5-triazin-2-yl)aminocarbonyl]benzene-sulfonamide), the active ingredient in DuPont Glean Weed Killer, has been proposed to act by inhibiting plant cell division. In order to further define the mode of action of this new herbicide, studies were made of the effects of chlorsulfuron on processes associated with plant DNA synthesis. No inhibitory effects were observed on DNA synthesis in isolated plant nuclei, and the enzymes DNA polymerase and thymidine kinase. Nucleoside precursors of DNA were not effective in lessening chlorsulfuron inhibition of thymidine incorporation into DNA of corn root tips. These results indicate that chlorsulfuron does not inhibit plant cell division by a direct inhibition of DNA synthesis.  相似文献

Artificial muscles and electric motors found in autonomous robots and prosthetic limbs are typically battery-powered, which severely restricts the duration of their performance and can necessitate long inactivity during battery recharge. To help solve these problems, we demonstrated two types of artificial muscles that convert the chemical energy of high-energy-density fuels to mechanical energy. The first type stores electrical charge and uses changes in stored charge for mechanical actuation. In contrast with electrically powered electrochemical muscles, only half of the actuator cycle is electrochemical. The second type of fuel-powered muscle provides a demonstrated actuator stroke and power density comparable to those of natural skeletal muscle and generated stresses that are over a hundred times higher.  相似文献

Progeny (n = 70) from unrelated, DNA tested, Rendement Napole carrier (RN-/rn+) Hampshire sires, and DNA tested, Rendement Napole normal (rn+/rn+) Yorkshire dams were genotyped for the segregating RN- allele via DNA marker-assisted methodology. Six slaughter groups ensued, with littermates all being represented within the same slaughter group. Boneless pork loins were removed from right carcass sides after a 48-h chill at 2 degrees C. The anterior portions of the loins were not enhanced, whereas the posterior sections were enhanced with a solution containing 0.5% sodium chloride and 0.5% sodium tripolyphosphate to 110% of their initial weight. Carcasses of carrier pigs had less (P < 0.05) 10th rib fat depth and a greater (P < 0.01) percentage carcass lean than carcasses of normal pigs. Postmortem LM pH of carrier pigs was lower (P < 0.002) at 3, 6, 12, and 24 h, and tended to be lower (P = 0.062) at 48 h compared with that of normal animals. Samples of LM from carrier pigs had greater (P < 0.01) glycolytic potential values, drip loss percentages, and a* values, and lower pH values at fabrication than LM from normal pigs. No genotype differences (P > 0.05) were found for LM lactate, L*, or b* values. Nonenhanced semimembranosus samples from carrier pigs exhibited greater (P < 0.05) purge loss percentages and L* values, and lower (P < 0.01) pH values than samples from normal pigs. Enhanced LM samples exhibited greater (P < 0.05) drip and purge loss percentages, greater pH, and lower L* values at fabrication, regardless of Napole status. These findings suggest that the Napole gene has a positive influence on carcass leanness but detrimental effects for lean quality, which were often further compounded when meat was subjected to enhancement treatment.  相似文献

A new method for determination of pyrethroids, pyrethrins, and piperonyl butoxide (PBO) by high-resolution gas chromatography/high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRGC/HRMS) was developed for surface water samples. The method is based on sampling 100 L of ambient surface water with a solid phase extraction (SPE) technique that uses both wound glass fiber filters for collecting the particulate-associated chemicals and XAD-2 resin for collecting the dissolved chemicals. The method detection limits of the analytes ranged from 0.58 to 8.16 ng/sample, which is equivalent to a detection limit range of 0.0058-0.082 ng/L for a 100 L water sample collected by the SPE technique. The SPE when coupled with HRGC/HRMS was a suitable match for detecting these chemicals at subnanogram per liter ranges that are toxicologically significant to aquatic organisms. To confirm the utility of this method for environmental applications, pyrethroids and PBO were found at subnanogram per liter concentrations in surface water samples collected from five tributaries (primarily urban creeks) of the San Francisco Bay, California.  相似文献

To evaluate antigen-specific proliferative and activation-associated responses from Mycobacterium bovis-infected reindeer, blood mononuclear cells from M. bovis- (n = 10) and non-infected reindeer (n = 4) were stimulated with a recombinant early secretory antigenic target-6 and culture filtrate protein-10 fusion protein (rESAT6:CFP10), M. bovis purified protein derivative, pokeweed mitogen, or medium alone and evaluated by flow cytometry using dye tracker analysis and cell surface marker staining. gammadelta TCR+ and CD8+ cells, but not CD4+ cells, from M. bovis-infected reindeer proliferated in response to specific antigen stimulation. Expression (i.e., mean fluorescence intensity) of CD44 was increased and CD62L decreased on proliferative as compared to non-proliferative fractions in antigen- and mitogen-stimulated cultures. In response rESAT6:CFP10 stimulation, MHC II fluorescence intensity was increased on CD4+, gammadelta TCR+, CD172a+, and IgM+ cells from infected reindeer as compared to that of non-stimulated cells from the same reindeer. Recombinant ESAT6:CFP10 stimulation also induced expansion of a CD172a+, MHC II+ population within mononuclear cell cultures from M. bovis-infected reindeer. Despite a moderate challenge dose and extended duration of incubation, experimental infection of reindeer was generally limited to lymph nodes draining the inoculation site, suggestive of host resistance to progressive disease. Present in vitro findings, therefore, may be predictive of host responses by reindeer that limit progression to disseminated disease.  相似文献

We have identified a companion to the young planetary-mass brown dwarf Oph 162225-240515. This pair forms a resolved binary consisting of two objects with masses comparable to those of extrasolar giant planets. Several lines of evidence confirm the coevality and youth of the two objects, suggesting that they form a physical binary. Models yield masses of approximately 14 and approximately 7 times the mass of Jupiter for the primary and the secondary object, respectively, at an age of approximately 1 million years. A wide ( approximately 240-astronomical unit) binary in the ultra-low-mass regime poses a challenge to some popular models of brown dwarf formation.  相似文献
